INTRODUCTION Though acknowledged as one of the most influential European churchman of the past century,' and widely lauded in American Lutheran circles as the author of the acclaimed The Hammer of God, much remains to be learned in the U.S. of Bishop Emeritus Dr. Bo Harald Giertz (Gothenburg [Goteborg] diocese, Church of Sweden, served 1949-1970)2 and of his theology, especially concerning the specific doctrine which served as the foundation of the novel, the Order of Grace. Furthermore, interest in Giertz in America is increasing rapidly: several translation projects are underway, a film based on the first chapter of The Hammer of God is being widely distributed and viewed, and an international symposium on the bishop's life and doctrine is planned. "I syndares stalk" [In the Place of Sinners] (272-316), has strangely never been published in English. Written over a period of six weeks in 1941, while Giertz served the tiny rural parish of Torpa, this is perhaps Giertz's most important and certainly best known work. (See the brief overview: Appendix HI, 74 below.) As such, this writer will herein indicate how the Order of Grace, ordo salutis, is its foundation by referring the reader to it often. Giertz himself, in an interview, said that the book was written "to describe how God works when he leads a person to the true faith in Christ. ...I am convinced that it was right to depict the Order of Grace in this way. For modern man to understand this, it is necessary to illustrate it among people of flesh and blood" (Christian Braw, I Tiden: Essayer och samtal [Boris, Sweden: Norma Bokfbrlag, 1995] 134, 135, this writer's translation). Perhaps the translation of ordo salutis as "the Order of Grace" is unclear to the English reader, as well as the importance of this concept, specifically in Swedish Lutheranism: see below, especially 10-21, and footnotes 6, 32, 35, 37, 46, and 47, in which these concerns are addressed. The terms ordo salutis (literally, "the way/order of salvation") and the Swedish nadens ordning (literally, "the order of grace") are commonly used interchangeably by Swedish theologians to refer to the Order of Grace: see, e.g., "Nidens Ordning," Nordisk Teologisk Uppslagsbok, 1955 ed. 1 and of the renewal of the church. As the Order of Grace has commonly been associated with pietism, this thesis will also address Giertz's approach to the latter. In section I, the thesis begins with a summary of the heritage of West Coast Swedish Lutheranism, or "Schartauanism," and its spiritual father, Henric Scharatu (1757-1825). Giertz described himself as a "Schartauan" and was, throughout his life, a consistent proponent of Schartau's theology. It was from Schartau that Giertz developed his confession of the Order of Grace, which is portrayed in-depth in section II. Sources include his many and various writings, most of which are as yet untranslated into English, as well as secondary literature Swedish theologians, historians, and pastors such as Akerberg, H. Andrae, Bolling, Braw, Hallbjorner, Hardt, Imberg, Jarlert, Mattsson, Murray, Oljelund, Olofsson, Sidenvall, Soderblom, et al. The conclusion, section III, summarizes my work and answers the questions: Who was Bo Giertz? Was he a pietist, especially in his presentation of the Order of Grace? What elements of pietism did Giertz confess? What did he discard? What does his theology mean for the continual reform and renewal of the Church? The central task of understanding Giertz's use of the Order of Grace includes several other interrelated questions. Who was Henric Schartau? What is the place of baptism in the Order of Grace? What is the meaning of faith? What are the roles of God and man in conversion? Where does the Lord's Supper fit into the Order of Grace? How are law and gospel distinguished and applied, as well as justification and sanctification? What of the two kinds of righteousness? How does a Christian live a life of prayer in the Church and her liturgy? How and where is all of this illustrated in the classic The Hammer of God? To answer these questions, this thesis uses the following approach. The first section explains the teachings and practices of Henric Schartau and how they came to find a home in the Gothenburg diocese, of which Giertz later became bishop. The second section shows how and why baptism is foundational for the 2 Order of Grace; it also depicts the Order of Grace as, according to Giertz, central to pastoral soul care, prayer, the Church and her liturgy, and ultimately conversion and faith. The third section, summarizes and answers the questions of the thesis while also demonstrating how the Order of Grace, and Giertz's theology as a whole, is pertinent to laity and clergy as well as to the present and future of the Church. 3 A. Biographical and Historical Context Giertz died 12 July 1998 in Stockholm, Sweden, one month short of the age of 93. Known worldwide as a Lutheran writer and leader, he was a staunch defender of the faith. However, it was not always so. Giertz was born to an atheist father and agnostic mother. Nevertheless, as was universally customary in Sweden at the time, his mother, perhaps influenced by a childhood in the Church, had Giertz baptized on 3 November 1905. Later, as a teenager, Giertz was also confirmed; anything else was unheard of at the time. But Giertz was not yet a believer. The confirmation instruction was encouraged by the parents simply as a way of educating the young man about Christianity from a theoretical point of view: his reading of Darwin and atheistic propaganda from his father's library kept Giertz's faithless guard up during the catechesis.

Langbartels ext, you have heard that we should carefully distinguish the two N preaching offices, that of Moses and that of Christ. Moses came with such a shining face so that everything sparkled in his eyes. It was as if his face had rays;2 that is, it was glowing, so that people could not remain before it; rather, he had to cover3 his face when he wanted to speak with the children of Israe1.4 When he climbed up the mountain to God, he took off the cover; but when he returned to the children of Israel, he again put the veil before his eyes [Ex 34:29-35]. 'Luther himself prepared the Church Postils for Advent through Lent. The press of other duties led Luther to entrust the preparation of the remaining Church Postils to Caspar Cruciger (1504-1548). Cruciger's normal practice was to choose a sermon of Luther on the Historic Epistle or Gospel reading, edit it, and publish this as the Church Postil, which met with Luther's full approval. For the Church Postil on the Epistle read­ ing for the Twelfth Sunday after Trinity on 2 Co 3:4-11, Cruciger chose the sermon series Luther preached in August and September 1535 (Pr 1566-1570). In his editing of these sermons, Cruciger chose to omit most of the last sermon in which Luther dealt especially with the veil of Moses.

Christ is prophesied, witnessed, predicted, typified, and prefigured; but apart from a few alleged christophanic appearances, he is largely the subject of another, historically subsequent Testament. This thesis surveys the christological approaches to the Old Testament since the early 20th century breach made within historicism, introduces a patristic mindset, proposes an ontological foundation to a sacramental (real-presence) approach, then demonstrates this through a reading of Zechariah 9-14. The goal is to bring together three arenas of study—exegetical, historical, theological—and demonstrate how their united lens clarifies the substantial referent of Scripture, namely Christ. The character of the OT witness is thus presented in christological terms, suggesting a reading that recognizes the divine person within the text itself, at home in the sensus literalis. By way of analogy to the Cyrillian hypostatic union and a Lutheran eucharistic comprehension, the task is to show how one encounters the hypostasis of Christ by means of the text’s literal sense.

    Odd Eivind Stensland Carl Olof Rosenius – Der Seelsorger des Nordens 1. Einleitung Carl Olof Rosenius wird zu den größten Laienpredigern in Schweden gezählt. Er hat zwar nie ein Buch geschrieben, war aber dennoch einer der drei am meisten gelesenen Verfasser im Schweden des 19. Jahrhunderts – neben Selma Lagerlöf und August Strindberg. Bei Rosenius ist der Grund darin zu suchen, dass er für die Zeitschrift Der Pietist verantwortlich war, die sehr weit verbreitet war. Darin schrieb er erbauliche Artikel, die später in Buchform erschienen. Es sind ungefähr 90 verschiedene Titel von Rosenius auf Schwedisch erschie- nen. Seine Schriften wurden in über 30 Sprachen übersetzt, und seine Bücher erreichten in Schweden eine Auflage von über zwei Millionen, und in anderen Sprachen eine Million. Rosenius starb am 24. Februar 1868 im Alter von 52 Jahren. Aber im Laufe dieses kurzen Lebens prägte er ein ganzes Volk, nicht nur in Schweden, sondern auch im ganzen Norden und darüber hinaus und tut das immer noch. Es müsste viel mehr gesagt werden, als der Umfang dieses Artikels zulässt, aber ich möchte doch eine kleine Skizze von diesem Mann zeichnen, der so viel bedeutet hat – sowohl für mich als auch für viele andere Menschen. So lange es ein lebendiges Christentum gibt, wird sein Name geliebt und aktuell bleiben. 1 2. Wer war dieser Mann? Colyer INTRODUCTION .If)ne of the curious facts evident to anyone who spends ~ even a brief amount of time examining the secondary lit­ erature on John Wesley (the founder of Methodism) and his theology is how little has been written on Wesley's doctrine of the Trinity, save for a spate of recent articles.} Indeed, there is scant discussion of the Trinity in many books devoted to Wes­ ley's theology. This dearth of attention to the Trinity is especially clear in the area of Wesley's soteriology, his understanding of the ordo salutis (order of salvation). A classic example of this is The Scripture Way of Salvation: The Heart of John Wesley's Theology, a significant work by one of the premier contemporary experts on Wesley's theology.2 There is no chapter, and not even a subsection of a chapter, that deals with the Trinitarian deep­ structure of Wesley's understanding of salvation.3 In fact, there is no reference to the Trinity in the index and hardly any mention of the Trinity anywhere in the book despite the fact that Wesley understood the ordo in Trinitarian terms.
