The following Abridgment of Mr Elliott's work was planned when I was Governor-General's Agent and Commissioner of Benares, as one of a series of books published in India for the use of schools and native Christians, both in English and the vernaculars. It appeared to me that it was impossible for natives to peruse with understanding this important portion of God's Word, upon the reading, hearing, and keeping of which so special a blessing is promised, (Kev. i. 3, xxii. 7,) without some such brief and cheap epitome of the corresponding history, according to the best expositors. Assisted by Archdeacon Pratt's Para phrase, I have endeavoured just to take the cream of Mr Elliott's interpretation, so as to shew the mar vellous agreement between the prophecy and a suc cession of historical events, from the time when the vision took place, (Rev. i 19,) down to the present era. The knowledge of these true historical events, , VI PREFACE. and the remarks founded thereupon, will remain use ful, even should they not be those which the inspired penman had specially in view, and the commentator be consequently mistaken in his application of them to the prophecy. The Abridgment, interrupted by the Mutiny, is now completed and printed in English, in the hope that it may prove useful to some who cannot afford a more expensive explanation ; and also with a view to the preparation of counterparts in Hindustanee, Bengalee, Tamil, and other Indian languages, as God may enable me. -

Haquin Spegel (1645–1714) was one of the foremost leaders of the Swedish church in his time. His clerical career was swift. At the beginning of the 1670’s he was chaplain to Queen Hedvig Eleonora, and later he was with King Charles XI in the Scanian war 1675–79. For some years he was clerical leader of the island of Got- land, before he became bishop of Skara in 1685 and of Linköping in 1691. He died archbishop of Uppsala. Spegel wrote in many genres. His sermons are, from an artistic point of view, the best of the century in Sweden. Spegel also wrote poetry in different genres: Bible paraphrases, panegyrics and series of emblematics. The Swedish hymn-book of 1986 still contains hymns by him. But he also wrote entirely profane poetry, which has never been printed, mainly satirical poems. His most ambitious work, Guds Werk och Hwila (God’s Work and Rest) is about Creation and belongs to Hexameron literature. -

CHAPTER 10 Resistance to the Reformation in 16th-Century Finland Kaarlo Arffman 10.1 Introduction The Protestant Reformation is an interesting era for analyzing the nature of religion, in which the reformers wanted to reshape the Christian religion and lifestyle. Research into the resistance to the Reformation enables us to reach a better understanding of Christianity in Finland in the Late Middle Ages. In the Reformation era Finland was the eastern part of the Kingdom of Sweden. Originally, there was only one bishop for the whole of Finland, in Turku (in Swedish Åbo). However, in the years 1555–1564 and 1568–1578 another bishop headed the eastern parishes from Vyborg (Viipuri). Lutheran ideas had reached Denmark and Sweden already by the beginning of the 1520s and received endorsement, especially in the big cities. The kings of Denmark and Sweden supported Lutheran preachers but the theological opponents of Lutheranism were also able to express their opinions.1 After internal conflict and the victory of the convinced Lutheran, Duke Christian in Denmark, in 1536, the situation changed. The debate was over. The new king, Christian III, took the Church under his direction and began to shape it into a Lutheran one. Resistance became risky. In Sweden King Gustav Vasa followed the example of the Danish king.2 In Norway and Finland the influence of Lutheranism was weaker and slower in developing than in Denmark and Sweden. Gotthold’s correspondence with Karl Lessing reveals a profound disagreement between brothers. Early in 1774, Karl declared that he “could not understand how his enlightened brother Gotthold could have gone back to studying theology instead of writing plays.”1 After it became clear to Karl and Gotthold’s circle in Berlin that he meant to defend Lutheran Orthodoxy at the expense of enlightened theology, Karl wrote to Gotthold, this time concerned that his brother had altogether abandoned the cause of enlightened Christianity. -

“Two Small Copper Coins” and Much More Chinese Protestant Women and Their Contributions to the Church – Cases from Past and Present Fredrik Fällman Introduction Observations of Christian congregations around the world, including China, will show that women make up the majority in most given settings. One could say that women have been, and are, the backbone of the Church, from the women around Jesus to the studies today that show how women make up the majority of active church members, in China as much as elsewhere. The comparative lack of male churchgoers has been discussed at length in many Churches and denominations in the West, and there have also been a number of surveys and studies trying to document and analyse this situation. Recent stud- ies also indicate that women are more religious than men in general, especially among Christians.1 In the first decades after Mao Zedong’s death the tendency towards a major- ity of older women may have been even stronger in China than in the West, since fewer younger people felt secure enough to state their faith publicly in China, or were willing to suffer the consequences in school or at work. Also, the Chinese government recognises the situa tion of a majority of women in the Church, especially in the countryside. There is even a typical Chinese phrase for this phenomenon, “lao san duo” 老三多 (three old many), i.e. Prof. Dr. Fredrik Fällman is Senior Lecturer in Chinese and Associate Head of the Department of Languages & Literatures at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.
