Abstract This thesis challenges the traditional paradigm, which assumes that the period c.1050-c.1250 saw a move away from the ‘biblical’ or ‘liturgical’ kingship of the early Middle Ages towards ‘administrative’ or ‘law-centred’ interpretations of rulership. By taking an interdisciplinary and transnational approach, and by bringing together types of source material that have traditionally been studied in isolation, a continued flourishing of Christ-centred kingship in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries is exposed. In demonstrating that Christological understandings of royal power were not incompatible with bureaucratic development, the shared liturgically inspired vocabulary deployed by monarchs in the three realms is made manifest. The practice of monarchical inauguration forms the focal point of the thesis, which is structured around three different types of source material: liturgical texts, narrative accounts and charters. Rather than attempting to trace the development of this ritual, an approach that has been taken many times before, this thesis is concerned with how royal inauguration was understood by contemporaries. Key insights include the importance of considering queens in the construction of images of royalty, the continued significance of unction despite papal attempts to lower the status of royal anointing, and the depth of symbolism inherent in the act of coronation, which enables a reinterpretation of this part of the inauguration rite. -

This thesis will attempt both to theorise the concept, as well as developing an ideal-typical framework to analyse one of the most important strategies of the dynasty: the dynastic marriage. It will be argued that the dynamics of dynasticism arose from the changing structures to the European family around AD 1000. These structural changes gave further rise to hierarchies among dynastic actors, interests, and strategies, which will form the basis of a theory of dynasticism. This theory will be utilised to make sense of the various interests involved in creating matrimonial strategies for the dynasty. The argument advanced is that dynastic heirs married according to logics of reproduction; dynastic cadets married for territorial acquisitions; and dynastic daughters married to establish and maintain alliances with other dynasties. These theoretical insights will be used to analyse the marriages of three dynasties in medieval Europe: the Plantagenet, the Capet, and the Hohenstaufen. Signature: ………………………………………………………….. 1 Abstract This thesis investigates the nature of the thirteenth-century constitution by focusing on the minority of Henry III. It is argued that Henry’s succession to the throne was a demonstration of the complicated interaction between hereditary right, designation, and election. It is argued that the distribution of power within the government was, for the most part, ill-defined and varied throughout the minority’s course. It is also argued that there was a fundamental uncertainty about when the minority would end and what role Henry himself would play during the minority. Taken together, it is argued, these demonstrate that Henry’s minority was more of a political settlement than a constitutional settlement. This does not mean that England had no constitution during the thirteenth century but merely that it was more sensitive to the political dynamics of the time than perhaps modern constitutions are and that, compared to modern constitutions, it was much less well defined and lacking a clear unified philosophy. -

A MIRROR FOR PRINCESSES: THE PORTRAYAL OF QUEENSHIP IN THREE FRENCH VERNACULAR CHRONICLES, C. 1260 - C. 1310 A thesis submitted to the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Thandiwe Parker May 2018 Senior Supervisor: Dr. Chris Jones (University of Canterbury, History) Associate Supervisor: Associate Professor Kim Phillips (University of Auckland, History) 2 3 Abstract France in the thirteenth century offers a significant example of the changing role of queens in government: power was centralised and the queen’s political role was reduced. The transformation of French government in this period has been the subject of many studies, yet medieval perceptions of the queen’s role remain under-explored. This thesis examines three French vernacular chronicles written between c.1260-c.1310 in order to deepen our understanding of attitudes towards Capetian queens and queenship during this key period of change. The Minstrel of Reims gives a fictionalised version of recent French history in his Récits; John of Joinville, a nobleman, provides an eyewitness account in the Vie de Saint Louis; and Primat gives a monk’s perspective on France’s broader history in his Roman. The chronicles, written for royal or noble audiences, were intended, in part, to encourage good behaviour by presenting models of desirable and undesirable actions. This thesis explores the presentation of queenship in these texts via four areas: familial relations, piety, sexual agency, and government and influence. It demonstrates that each chronicler minimised the involvement of queens in political affairs. Instead, each chronicler placed emphasis on the queen’s role as a mother and as a loyal and pious wife. -

What work there is tends to focus on those rites reserved to the bishop collected in pontificals and therefore ignores the potential of more mundane books in daily use. This case study of a sacramentary used by the bishop of Noyon in the late tenth and early eleventh centuries reveals, through a comparison with similar materials produced for contemporary communities within northern France, the ways in which the bishop’s roles in the secular world were reflected in minor changes made to the liturgy in use in one of his churches. It thus casts fresh light on the less well-known see of Noyon, and at the same time demonstrates the importance of incorporating such mundane materials into modern studies
