A Mirror for Princesses: the Portrayal of Queenship in Three French Vernacular Chronicles, C. 1260 A MIRROR FOR PRINCESSES: THE PORTRAYAL OF QUEENSHIP IN THREE FRENCH VERNACULAR CHRONICLES, C. 1260 - C. 1310 A thesis submitted to the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Thandiwe Parker May 2018 Senior Supervisor: Dr. Chris Jones (University of Canterbury, History) Associate Supervisor: Associate Professor Kim Phillips (University of Auckland, History) 2 3 Abstract France in the thirteenth century offers a significant example of the changing role of queens in government: power was centralised and the queen’s political role was reduced. The transformation of French government in this period has been the subject of many studies, yet medieval perceptions of the queen’s role remain under-explored. This thesis examines three French vernacular chronicles written between c.1260-c.1310 in order to deepen our understanding of attitudes towards Capetian queens and queenship during this key period of change. The Minstrel of Reims gives a fictionalised version of recent French history in his Récits; John of Joinville, a nobleman, provides an eyewitness account in the Vie de Saint Louis; and Primat gives a monk’s perspective on France’s broader history in his Roman. The chronicles, written for royal or noble audiences, were intended, in part, to encourage good behaviour by presenting models of desirable and undesirable actions. This thesis explores the presentation of queenship in these texts via four areas: familial relations, piety, sexual agency, and government and influence. It demonstrates that each chronicler minimised the involvement of queens in political affairs. Instead, each chronicler placed emphasis on the queen’s role as a mother and as a loyal and pious wife. In so doing, each writer revealed his support for the administrative changes to the office of queenship. The thesis thus demonstrates that the vernacular French chroniclers each presented a model of queenship that acted in the interests of the Capetian royal family. It establishes that these chroniclers showed that a queen, following the expectations of her position, would help ensure the peace and stability of the kingdom. Edgar (ed.), The Vulgate Bible: The New Testament, 6 vols, Douay-Rheims edn, Cambridge, MA, Harvard University Press, 2010-2013. 10 11 Introduction Our holy mother and lady, Madame Isabelle, was of royal lineage and was the daughter of the very noble king Louis of France, who was the son of king Philip, and the daughter of the very noble queen of France, Madame the queen Blanche ... She was pledged by her family to contract a marriage with the son of the emperor of Rome ... but she never wanted to assent to corporal marriage, because she had chosen the enduring husband, our Lord Jesus Christ, in perfect virginity.1 Isabelle of France (d. 1270), the sister of Louis IX (r. 1226-1270) and daughter of Blanche of Castile (d. 1252), refused to bow before tradition and expectation. She rejected marriage outright and dedicated her life to God. Isabelle’s remarkable decision has, in recent years, led many scholars to examine her life and its legacy; indeed, she is one of the most extensively studied Capetian royal women.2 However, the authors of the vernacular chronicles studied in this thesis, which were written during the late-thirteenth and early-fourteenth centuries, did not deem her life worthy of much attention. This thesis examines three French vernacular chronicles, a section of the Grandes Chroniques de France known as the Roman des rois, the Vie de Saint Louis, and the Récits d’un ménestrel de Reims, yet it is only in the Récits that Isabelle makes even a fleeting appearance. Instead, the authors of these texts, comprising a nobleman, a monk, and an entertainer, were concerned with royal women who played a more traditional role: those who married, produced heirs, and influenced the running of the kingdom.     British Royal Banners 1199 – Present Geoff Parsons & Michael Faul Abstract The presentation begins with the (accepted) date of 1199, the death of King Richard I, the first king known to have used the three gold lions on red. It continues to show how King Edward III added the French Royal Arms, consequent to his claim to the French throne. There is then the change from “France Ancient” to “France Modern” by King Henry IV in 1405, which set the pattern of the arms and the standard for the next 198 years. The story then proceeds to show how, over the ensuing 234 years, there were no fewer than six versions of the standard until the adoption of the present pattern in 1837. The presentation includes pictures of all the designs, noting that, in the early stages, the arms appeared more often as a surcoat than a flag. There is also some anecdotal information regarding the various patterns.     Apotheosis of St. Louis The plaster statue of King Louis IX of France (1214- 1270) was sculpted by Charles Henry Niehaus for the 1904 World’s Fair. After the Fair, the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Company decided to present a bronze version of the sculpture to the City of St. Louis. The plaster was cast in bronze by W. R. Hodges. The statue has stood tall upon Art Hill since 1906. WHO WAS ST. LOUIS ANYWAY? St. Louis IX was King of France from 1226 to 1270. He was crowned king at the age of 12 and his mother ruled the kingdom as regent until he reached maturity. A devout Catholic, St. Louis was known for his sense of justice and piety. He led two crusades to recover the Holy Land, the second of which led to his death. He is the only French king to be canonized a saint. He was a family man. He was a loving husband to Margaret of Provence and father to eleven children. He was very close to his mother, Queen Blanche, who instilled in him a deep love for his faith. He was a humanitarian. He fed the poor daily at his table in the palace and washed their feet every Saturday. He often visited hospitals and tend- ed to the sick. He built hospitals, libraries, orphanages, and hostels for the blind and for women. He promoted justice, peace, and reform. He reformed the courts and the tax system, introduced the concept of the presumption of innocence in criminal procedure, and eliminated trial by combat and trial by ordeal, replacing them with trial by jury.

Since the demise of the Order has recently received a great deal of attention in both historical scholarship and popular culture, I analyze and critique numerous theories concerning the trial of the Templars and contextualize it by revealing the causes for the Order’s creation. I use an array of primary and secondary sources to explain why each event occurred despite being unpopular with a significant portion of Christian officials. I ultimately contend that most of the aforementioned theories are insufficient to explain the rise and fall of the Order because they fail to grasp the complexity of each event. The Templars’ creation resulted from a lengthy theological justification for a unique form of Christian holy war, papal ambitions, and a palpable ethos of fear and violence within Christendom that was redirected against an external enemy.

When King Philip IV of France asserted his authority over French bishops, Boniface responded with a papal bull (an official document issued by the pope). Nnatuanya Abstract Since the death and resurrection of Christ, the church has been a focal point in the history and development of the human race. Church as an institution has been a determinant factor in the socio-economic, politico-cultural and religious segments of the society. As a great player, its success has been the success of the society and its failure the failure of humanity. However, this institution has affected the society positively and negatively through her various stages it has passed since inception. Nevertheless, looking at the present church characterized with politics of rancor, struggle for power, excesses and abuses, intolerance, corruption, divide and rule, ethnicity, favoritism among others, it seemed as if to say that the church has not learnt from her passed. The captivity of the popes has a great volume of lesson for present leaders in a view to have rethink. Therefore, this work ventures at investigating why this captivity in order to prevent such event in this present time. Introduction Since the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the church has metamorphosed into series of stages. It has been persecuted more than any other institution yet has survived. In each period the church came out not being the same. However, between 1305-1416 the church passed through prolonged period of crises during which it seems that the church is doomed to destruction. It found its authority undermined, openly challenged and divided among rivals. Although, at the end, it emerged with its authority, yet the struggle for supremacy brought about significant changes to the structure of the church and sowed the seed that germinated during the reformation era.

Abstract This thesis challenges the traditional paradigm, which assumes that the period c.1050-c.1250 saw a move away from the ‘biblical’ or ‘liturgical’ kingship of the early Middle Ages towards ‘administrative’ or ‘law-centred’ interpretations of rulership. By taking an interdisciplinary and transnational approach, and by bringing together types of source material that have traditionally been studied in isolation, a continued flourishing of Christ-centred kingship in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries is exposed. In demonstrating that Christological understandings of royal power were not incompatible with bureaucratic development, the shared liturgically inspired vocabulary deployed by monarchs in the three realms is made manifest. The practice of monarchical inauguration forms the focal point of the thesis, which is structured around three different types of source material: liturgical texts, narrative accounts and charters. Rather than attempting to trace the development of this ritual, an approach that has been taken many times before, this thesis is concerned with how royal inauguration was understood by contemporaries. Key insights include the importance of considering queens in the construction of images of royalty, the continued significance of unction despite papal attempts to lower the status of royal anointing, and the depth of symbolism inherent in the act of coronation, which enables a reinterpretation of this part of the inauguration rite.

I argue that the sequences, conductus, and motets discussed herein were composed with the express purpose of constituting and reifying normative gender roles for medieval queen-consorts. Although not every paraliturgical work in the English ii repertory may be classified as such, I argue that those works that feature female exemplars— model women who exemplified the traits, behaviors, and beliefs desired by the medieval Christian hegemony—should be reassessed in light of their historical and cultural moments. These liminal works, neither liturgical nor secular in tone, operate similarly to visual icons in order to create vivid images of exemplary women saints or Biblical figures to which queen- consorts were both implicitly as well as explicitly compared. The Iconography of Queenship is organized into four chapters, each of which examines an occasional musical work and seeks to situate it within its own unique historical moment. In addition, each chapter poses a specific historiographical problem and seeks to answer it through an analysis of the occasional work.

Starting out as a small group, these warrior monks soon grew in power and prestige under the benefaction of St. Bernard and were charged with the protection of the Catholic Church by Pope Innocent II. Along with this favour bestowed upon them, the Templars quickly accumulated a great amount of wealth and territory across Europe. However, their power base was always in the Holy Land. The capture by Muslims of the city of Acre, the final Christian stronghold in Palestine, deprived them of this power base. Following this they were free to the predations of ambitious secular rulers, such as Philip IV of France. Philip, anxious to establish his authority and to acquire more revenue producing lands, was able to bring charges against the Templars accusing them of heresy which led to the eventual arrest and disbandment of the Knights Templar. The loss of their power base left the Templars vulnerable to condemnation by the society at large and, as such, they were unable to protect themselves, or be protected by others, when they came under threat.

    OCKHAM ON THE PAPACY Matthew Levering Shortly before the “Babylonian Captivity” of the popes in Avignon, Pope Boniface VIII issued two papal bulls repudiating the claims of King Philip IV of France: Ausculta Fili in 1301 and Unam Sanctam in 1302. The latter bull, which particularly outraged Dante and numer- ous others, taught that the papacy possessed supreme authority over both the ecclesial and the temporal spheres. Over the next few decades, prominent theologians involved in debate about papal authority included James of Viterbo, Giles of Rome, and Augustinus Triumphus on the “hierocratic” side, and John of Paris, Marsilius of Padua, and William of Ockham on the “anti-hierocratic” side. For Ockham, troubles began in the 1320s. Having traveled to the papal court in Avignon to defend the theological orthodoxy of certain of his philosophical theses, Ockham came to the view that Pope John XXII’s teachings on apostolic poverty were heretical.
