ITO ANG unang salitang natutunan ko sa corporate world, naunawaan ang kahulugan at kung paano dapat gagamitin para ilarawan ang karanasan, ilarawan ang buhay. Paano ba naman, sa unang araw ko sa trabaho matapos ang apat na taon sa kolehiyo, strike kaagad ang unang ipinatikim sa akin ng tinatawag nila the corporate world. Sa unang araw ko sa All Filipino Life Insurance Corporation, sinalubong ako ng mga nagi-strike na empleyado. Hindi nagkasundo ang unyon at management ng kumpanya sa bargaining table na itaas ang suweldo ng rank-and-file employees at dagdagan ang mga benepisyo tulad ng midyear, Christmas, at yearly increase bonuses. “Huwag mong pansinin iyang mga iyan. Basta ikaw, hindi ka puwedeng sumali sa unyon dahil you’re on the management side.” Ito 7 naman ang ikalawang aral na nakuha ko sa corporate world: kung hindi ka unyon, management ka, vice versa. Ito ang natatandaan ko habang pinapangaralan ako ni Ms. Dahlen, ang HRD Manager ng kumpanya. Hindi ko napigilan ang sarili ko na sulyapan ang sumasayaw niyang nunal sa pisngi na para siyang umiismid sa mga kausap niya. May mga galaw ang kanyang nunal: pakaliwa-pakanan kung ordinaryong usapan, at mahahalata mong nagsisinungaling ang damuhong manager at pataas- pababa naman kung ang pag-uusapan ay ang unyon sa opisina. “Ay sus! Magtigil ka nga, pang-kolehiyo lang ang dramang ‘yan,” buska ni Bona nang ipagtapat ko sa kanya na ang gusto ko talaga ay magtrabaho sa mga sikat na istasyon ng TV. ‘Yun bang makarating ako ng Singapore at maging VJ ng MTV, o kaya maging sikat na newscaster. “Hay naku, Bona, hindi mo kasi naiintindihan. Sabagay, generation gap kaya hindi mo ako ma-gets,” pagtatanggol ko. “Hindi ka kasi nanonood ng MTV. I’m sure ang pinapanood mo lang e Meteor Garden o Mari Mar!” “Alam mo iyan ang ipinagtataka ko sa mga kabataan ngayon, kung anu-anong mga kurso ang kinukuha sa kolehiyo. Tulad mo MassComm, putsa sa dami ng kumukuha niyan ngayon parang hindi na yata kayo magkakasya sa TV niyan a!” “Ang sakit mo namang magsalita, graduate naman ako ng UP Diliman ano. Tingnan mo ang presidente natin ngayon—artista noon, nasa tv, mahal ng masa…sikat.” “Kung makababalik lang ako sa kabataan ko, kukuha ako ng nursing. In demand ang mga nurse ngayon sa ibang bansa; baka iyon pa ang maging pamasahe ko papunta sa Amerika. Kaya si Michelle, nursing ang ipakukuha ko sa batang ‘yan.” May anak si Bona, dose anyos at sana’y high school na kung hindi nahinto sa Grade 3 dahil tinamaan ng sakit ang kidneys ng bata kaya dina-dialysis dalawang beses sa isang buwan. 8 “Bakit makararating din naman ako sa ibang bansa. Ang laki yata ng hirap ko sa UP, cum laude yata ako ‘no,” ang biro ko palagi kay Bona. “Pang ibang bansa yata ang qualifications ko.” “Ay! Good luck na lang sa career mo. Talagang hindi kita maiintindihan, Soledad, panahon pa ni Rizal ‘yang paninindigan mo sa buhay. Hindi na kailangan ng degree ngayon—dahil ang kailangan ngayon ay diskarte—‘Skills! Skills!’ sabi nga ni Dahlen. Tingnan mo ako, college graduate na at nagtatrabaho pa. Pero heto, suma-sideline at nagtitinda ng tocino, longganisa, hotdog, AVON, So-en, pati Forever Living Products pinatos ko na para lang masuportahan ang pangangailangan ng anak ko na ewan ko ba’t sa anak ko ipinataw ang parusa yata ng Diyos sa akin! Mabuti pa si Erap may pangakong para sa mahihirap pero ang diploma ni hindi mo maibayad sa MERALCO.” Sa kumpanya, pareho lang kami ni Bona ng departamento, Policy Services Department. Trabaho namin ang humarap sa mga policy holder sa kanilang mga tanong, magproseso ng claims, mag-monitor ng effectivity ng kontrata kung nababayaran ba ng annual, semi-annual, quarterly, o monthly ang premiums. Policy Services Assistant Level I (‘But that’s supervisory level, hija’ ang paliwanag ni Ms. Dahlen) ang ranggo ko at si Bona naman, dahil matagal na sa kumpanya, Level V (‘Rank-and-file…unlike you, galing ng UP’ ang tsismis naman sa akin ng isang staff ni Ms. Dahlen sa HRD). Noong mga unang buwan ko pa lamang sa kumpanya ay malamig na ang pakikitungo sa akin ni Bona. Inisip ko na kaya lang ganoon siya sa akin ay dahil katatapos lang ng strike, hang-over sa pagiging agit sa ilang araw at magdamag sa piketlayn, kumbaga. Pero nang lumaon aba nagdadabog na ang bruha at nagiging bugnutin kapag nagkakamali ako sa page-encode ng mga policy number. Bitch ang luka-luka sa unang anim na buwan ko sa kumpanya. “Dito sa corporate world, lahat corporate. Corporate ang attrire, corporate ang kilos at pagsasalita. At higit sa lahat, corporate ang kape. 9 Ang lahat ay pag-aari ng korporasyon. Puwede ba, huwag kang basta-basta kukuha ng kape sa coffee maker dahil tinitimpla ko iyan tuwing umaga para kay Boss Tsip.” Gano’n na lamang ang mga banat sa akin ni Bona nang mahuli niya akong kumuha ng kape isang umaga sa coffeemaker ng department manager namin. Inisip ko na lang kung bakit ganoon kagaspang ang trato niya sa akin dahil naiinggit siya. Sino nga naman ang hindi maiinggit e halos dalawampung taon na si Bona sa kumpanya pero wala pang tumaas sa kanya kundi sahod at ang plucked na kilay. E, ako na bagong pasok at katatapos pa lang nang kolehiyo, supervisor kaagad. Napawi lamang ang ganoong pag-iisip ko na naiinggit sa akin si Bonan nang mapagtanto ko na ano nga naman ang ikaiinggit sa akin ng bruha, di hamak na barya lang ang sinasahod ko kumpara sa kanya. Dahil sa CBA nila’y taun-taon na tumataas ang sahod niya. Huli na nang malaman ko na Supervisor ang ranggo ko pero ang sahod ko pang-rank- and-file. Ginawang ‘supervisory’ kuno para hindi ako makasali sa unyon. Impiyerno noon ang bawat araw na papasok ako sa opisina. Sige ang kalampagan ng mga puncher, stapler, tape dispenser at sige ang parinigan naming dalawa, mga palipad-hangin na punong-puno ng mga pigil na panggigilgil sa galit. Sa simula, ayaw ko siyang patulan dahil matanda na at ano naman ang mapapala ko sa isang hindi nagtapos sa UP. Sa sobrang sama ng loob ko kay Bona sa mga panahong iyon, nag- isip-isip na rin akong mag-resign dahil hindi ako makapagtatrabaho sa ganoong environment na kinamumuhian mo ang katrabaho mo. Sa bandang huli naisip ko, teka, bakit ba ako magre-resign e di nanalo ang gaga. Naisip ko na pahihirapan ko si Bona na mapaalis ako at hindi magiging madali ang lahat para sa kanya. Hindi ko rin maintindihan ang mga pag-uugali ng mga empleyadong matagal nang nagtatrabaho sa kumpanya. Halos araw- araw may naririnig akong tsismis tungkol sa akin. Kesyo hindi na raw ako virgin dahil taga-UP raw, sipsip daw, nagmamarunong e kabago- 10 bago pa lang sa kumpanya at marami pa raw kakaining bigas, at marami pang iba mula sa suot kong sapatos hanggang sa baon kong ulam tuwing tanghalian. Ganoon daw talaga sabi ni Mommy kapag bago ka sa kumpanya, pag-iinitan ka ng mga matatandang empleyado, kumbaga sa Magnolia Ice Cream, ‘Flavor of the Month’ ka. Pero sabi ni Mommy, huwag daw akong susuko. Tiisin ko lang daw dahil ganoon din ang ginawa niya noong bago siya sa kumpanya kung saan siya nagretiro matapos ang halos forty years. Sa kumpanya ring iyon niya nakilala si Papa, ang mga ninong at ninang ko ay mga ka-opisina rin nila ni Papa. Ganoon daw talaga sabi ni Mama, sa ‘totoong buhay’, kapag kumikita ka na at patuloy ang pangangailangan mong kumita kailangan matuto kang magtiis at makibagay. “Just don’t mind their insecurities. Alam mo kasi karamihan sa mga iyan ay miyembro ng unyon. Look at our union members, humuthot lang sa kumpanya ang alam ng mga iyan. Ang iba riyan hindi pa nakapagtapos ng kolehiyo, nakapasok lang dito dahil hindi pa uso ang Human Resources and Development twenty years ago,” payo’t paliwanag sa akin ni Ms. Dahlen habang tumataas-baba ang nunal niya sa kaliwang pisngi. Lumaon at nagsawa rin ang lahat. May bago na naman silang pinuntirya, isang bagong pasok sa Accounting Division. Pero si Bona ganoon pa rin, hindi pa rin nagbago ang pakikitungo sa akin. Minsan gusto ko na siyang komprontahin ngunit natatakot pa rin ako kanya. Palaban kasi ang hitsura ni Bona. Nakakatakot. Makapal ang make- up, pulang-pula ang mga labi sa lipistik, mataas magtakong, at higit sa lahat ang bunganga, walang pinipiling taong pakakawalan ng masasakit na salita. Noon gano’n ang tingin ko kay Bona. Ganyan naman talaga tayong mga tao, kapag hindi natin kilala kailangan husgahan ayon sa nais natin silang makilala. Hindi ko pa nakikilala nang lubos si Bona noon. 11 Kung paano kami nagkabati ni Bona ay isang alaala na babaunin ko habang ako’y nabubuhay at habang ang alaala niya’y nananatili sa aking dibdib.

In terms of volume and value of production, the chicken industry is second to the hog industry in the animal husbandry sector. Approximately 40% of the total volume of combined livestock and poultry production is credited to the chicken industry. The total per capita consumption of chicken meat in 2008-2009 in urban areas was 9.32 kilograms while that in rural areas was 6.14 kilograms. It placed second to pork with total per capita consumption of 10.66 kilograms and 7.90 kilograms in urban and rural areas, respectively (BAS, 2011). The scale of operation of chicken production in the country is either commercial or backyard. Backyard raisers are those who have less than 100 birds while those with flocks more than 100 are categorized as commercial. On the other hand, chickens are commonly categorized as broiler, layer, or native. Layers and broilers are imported hybrids with foreign strains. Broilers are grown for the meat carcasses while layers, for egg production. Native chickens are of a local breed as well as the so-called “improved” breeds that are crosses of local chickens with foreign traits. They are used both for meat and egg production. Yes, they’re just a few who had very successful selling lechon manok — one of Filipino’s all-time favorite dish, be it “ulam” for ordinary days, holidays or special occasions. You don’t really need a big capital here, just start a few pieces of chicken and a small place for grilling, and you’re off to a good start. Who knows, you could be the next lechon king. Here are several recipes I searched from the internet. RECIPE #1 Ingredients • 1 whole chicken • 3 tablespoons of brown or white sugar • 1 cup soy sauce • 1 head garlic, minced • 1 onion, finely chopped • 3 tablespoons of calamansi juice or lemon juice • 1/2 cup of sprite, 7up or beer • 2 cups of tanglad (lemon grass) for stuffing • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper Directions 1. Marinate the whole chicken in soy sauce, calamansi juice, minced garlic, chopped onions, soda or beer, sugar and pepper. 2. Let stand marinate in the refrigerator for 1 to 3 hours. 3. Stuff the chicken cavity with tanglad (lemon grass). 4. With increasing incomes and a burgeoning middle class, Filipinos are consuming more protein while also showing increasing preference for poultry. While pork had traditionally been the main protein source for Philippine diets, in 2019, chicken overtook pork for the first time in per capita consumption. As such and despite still present market access constraints limiting access to U.S. corn and poultry products, the Philippines continues to present long-term growth prospects for U.S. suppliers throughout the value chain, including in the form of agricultural inputs to support local poultry production, ingredients used by the local meat processing industry, and finished, consumer-ready products sold to retailers and food service providers.
