Crest - Verrès 4 INTRODUCTION MONTE Rosa Monte Rosa has always represented a point of interest for its natural beauty, inspiring many great figures including poets, authors, painters, naturalists and, above all, alpinists. It is known that in the early 500s, Leonardo da Vinci adventured onto the slopes of Monboso (Monte Rosa). The origin of this name comes from the ancient Celtic name, “roëse”, “roiza”, “rovesa”, meaning glacier. The first true recorded ascent of Monte Rosa dates back to 1778; the “Roccia della Scoperta” near the Lys Col, was climbed by seven alpinists from Gressoney, Valentino and Joseph Beck, Sebastian Linty, Joseph Zumstein, Nicolas Vincent, François Castel and Etienne Lisco. The subsequent climbs on the massif were also led by alpinists from Gresso- ney; in 1819 Nicolas and Joseph Vincent claimed the peak which then took their name (Vincent Pyramid). In the same year, Nicolas Vincent and Joseph Zumstein reached the 4561-metre peak which is now known as the Zumstein Spitz. In 1893, the Gressoney guides accompanied Her Majesty the Queen Margherita of Savoia to the opening ceremony of the highest observatory hut in Europe, which was named after her. Later, there were many first ascents completed by the Gressoney guides. In 1902, there was the first ascent of the south-east face of the Western Lyskamm by the guides, Franceso Curt,. Giacomo Davide and Alessandro Lazier. In 1903, the guides, Curtaz and Pellissier, along with Mrs Grace Filder, opened a new route on the south-east face of Western Lyskamm, which was then given the name, “via Filder” (the Filder route). In 1907, the first winter ascent of Dufour took place with the guides Antonio Curtaz and Franz Lazier who accompanied the alpinist Mario Piacenza. Then, in 1911, the first Italian ascent of the north face of Lyskamm and the first ascent of the south-west ridge of Castore were completed by the the guide Antonio Welf along with his client, Carlo Fortina. The Society of the Gressoney Alpine Guides was founded in 1963. 5 LIST OF MONTE ROSA CLIMBS • Dufour con discesa a Zermatt (4633 m) • Dufour dal colle Zumstein (4633 m) • Dufour per la cresta Rey (4633 m) • Dufour per la via Piacenza (4633 m) • Nordend per il colle Zumstein con discesa a Zermatt (4612 m) • Zumstein (4561 m) • Punta Gnifetti Capanna Margherita (4554 m) • Lyskamm orientale per cresta Est (4527 m) • Lyskamm orientale per cresta Sella (4527 m) • Lyskamm orientale per cresta Perazzi (4527 m) • Lyskamm orientale parete Sud via Guglielmina (4527 m) • Lyskamm orientale parete Nord (4527 m) • Lyskamm occidentale parete Nord (4481 m) • Lyskamm occidentale per cresta O. Its bold pyramidal shape evokes emotions of wonderment and even fear in those who view it for the first time, as its four distinct faces stand omnipotent and menacing over the green meadows below. Radek Sołtykowski i ja – Jacek Wichłacz. Termin: 8 – 16.08.2012r. Czyli tzw. długi weekend. Już następnego dnia, po rozbiciu namiotu na campingu w Randzie udaliśmy się na wyjścia aklimatyzacyjne. Z braku miejsc w schronisku wyjście do Weisshornhutte musieliśmy przesunąć do soboty. O mały włos a aklimatyzacja Marcina i moja trwałaby o noc dłużej i to w warunkach dość ubogich.

It was to be the first time that I would set foot on Tibetan soil. Through the small windows I tried to catch my first glimpse of the buildings. This country, its people, their beliefs and culture have fascinated me for a long time. Soon, I would be among them. However, I probably would not have travelled there without a special incentive. At the beginning of this trip stood the 2005 Klein Matterhorn project by Peak Architekten for the world’s highest hotel. It is a dream loca- tion for a hotel that will explode all dimensions. Like a space station, its pressurized cabins equipped with all amenities will make life comfortable at an altitude of 4000 m – just over 13,000 ft – above sea level.

  • The Matterhorn Centenary 7
THE MATTERHORN CENTENARY 7 THE MATTERHORN CENTENARY (Nine illustrations: nos. I- 9) VEN though the Matterhorn fell with unexpected ease to the first party which seriously pressed an attempt from the Swiss side, the eauty and isolation of the peak and its apparent inaccessibility- the latter confirmed by the lengthening history of frustrated attempts by the Italian ridge made it the most sought after prize in the Alps at the time of the first ascent. It still remains so, in the obvious sense to which the congestion of the Hornli ridge on any fine day in July or August bears witness. It has become a tourist's mountain, as well as a mountaineer's. But the mountaineer, however much he may deplore the fixed ropes and the crowds which swarm up and down them, will still wish to have climbed the Matterhorn. Neither the highest nor the hardest of the great peaks of the Alps, it continues to exercise much the same special fascina tion for climbers as it exercised a hundred years ago. July 14 of this year marks the hundredth anniversary of the day when Michel Croz' blouse, fixed to a tent-pole on the summit of the Matter horn, was seen 'at Zermatt at the Riffel in the Val Tournanche '; when the watchers in Breuil cried, 'Victory is ours!'; and when, an hour or two later, a sharp-eyed lad in Zermatt ran into the Monte Rosa hotel, saying that he had seen an avalanche fall from the summit of the Matter horn onto the Matterhorn glacier, and was reproved for telling idle stories.

Imperial College Monte Rosa Massif Expedition Report Ben Coope, Konstantin Holzner, James Lawson, Tim Seers, Harry Stuart-Smith and Tom Wheeler June 2015 Abstract A team of six from Imperial College spent a month climbing in and around the Monte Rosa Massif region of the Valais Alps, Switzerland. • The Swiss Alps Make Me Sick
The Swiss Alps Make Me Sick Europe with Countries - Multicolor by FreeVectorMaps.com The Alps are an expansive mountain range located in Europe that spans across eight countries: France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Austria, Monaco, Liechtenstein, and Slovenia. Some countries have more Alps than others. Switzerland is the most Alpine of all the eight Alpine countries. The Alps cover 65% of Switzerland, making this tall mountain range an important feature of the Swiss landscape and culture. Mountain climbing is a popular sport in Switzerland. The International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) measures and defines the different types of mountains all over the world. In the Alps, there are 82 four-thousanders, 48 of which are in Switzerland. A four-thousander is a mountain that is 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) above sea level. By the way, only Americans use feet to measure the height of stuff like mountains. The rest of the world uses meters and so will I for the rest of this article. Let me tell you a bit about myself: I’m more of a beachy, sea- level type of girl, not a climb-every-mountain type of girl. But when we were traveling in Europe, my friend Kim convinced me to climb a four-thousander in Switzerland with her. 2017 Reading Is Fundamental • Content by Simone Ribke The Swiss Alps Make Me Sick Well, Kim took pity on me and she took me up an “easy” mountain called the Breithorn that’s on Switzerland’s southern border, right near Italy. The climb is considered easy because the Klein Matterhorn cable car takes climbers up most of the way (3,880 meters) to the top of Klein Matterhorn, which is a mountain right next to Breithorn.
