Following these scales, and taking the lower estimates printed to allow for some inflation between and , it would appear that relative seniority and the monthly rates of pay for the principals on the Batavia would have been roughly as follows:. Peering into the night, Bosschieter thought he could make out a mass of spray, as though surf was breaking on an unseen reef. The tangled interfamily relationship between the Janses, the Cuicks, and the Dircxes may thus have been even more complicated than it first appears. With the help of a few disgruntled sailors, he hatched a plot to seize the ship and her riches. There is, in addition, a tradition on the southern Australian coast of a so-called mahogany ship, popularly supposed to be of Spanish origin, aground on a beach near Warrnambool, Victoria, and discovered sometime between and Murdered by Jeronimus Cornelisz by drowning, strangling, decapitation, orbutchery by axe. The journals have been assembled in roughly chronological order. The most popular of these pamphlets were published in several editions and must have achieved a relatively wide circulation. And they proved the men had at least reached the Tavern of the Ocean safely—a matter of importance at a time when it was all too common for ships to vanish without trace on the passage out or home. Creesje Jans as godmother On the first occasion, 4 September , Creesje alone stood as godparent to twins named Willem and Dirck; on the second, 3 December , she and her husband both became godparents to another pair—this one a boy and a girl—who were christened Willem and Neeltje; presumably the first Willem must have died in the interim. Please try again later. Ratelband, op. The encounter had left a bitter taste in the mouth for Ariaen Jacobsz as he was publicly reprimanded, and that too quite sternly by Francisco Pelsaert regarding disciplinary issues. Leaderless, unarmed, and unaware of Jeronimus's treachery, they were at the mercy of the mutineers. Antonij van den Heuvel He had arrived in Batavia in June and three months later was appointed fiscaal. That he was a superb sailor is beyond doubt; he had already skippered another large VOC merchantman with some success, and the East India Company was not in the habit of trusting its newest ships to indifferent officers. It is possible, though there is certainly no proof, that Jeronimus could have met the fencing master there; in any case, the point is that he may well have attended some intellectual salon run along similar lines. Swivel guns These were small cannons, on pivots, which were generally loaded with grapeshot, nails, or other antipersonnel devices and mounted on the poop rail to deter boarders. As stated by other reviewers, this is history meant to be read, not consulted, but the obvious depth of research undertaken is truly impressive. As for Ariaen Jacobsz, he was a veteran of several voyages to the East and probably in his middle forties, which would have made him one of the oldest men on board. The mutineers became intoxicated with killing, and no one could stop them which led to a splurge of random killings. In putting narriative in the forefront he weaves historical epics which, while covering the era competently, put evocative story telling front and centre. Pelsaert took control of the factory at Agra in —4 on the death of his predecessor, Wouter Heuten. So much silver was shipped out to the East that the States-General was forced to pass a law forbidding more than two-thirds of the bullion coming into the country to be reexported. At least it was warmer now, and the storms had abated as the Batavia headed north after more than seven long months at sea. I tend to think the predikant was simply being inexact in what was not, after all, an official account. Unbeknownst to the commander, even before the shipwreck there had been a mutiny brewing. Navigating far to the south, along the borders of the Roaring Forties, the Batavia would traverse each degree of longitude considerably more quickly than would have been the case farther north. Since Gerritsz seems to have been kept busy on the Council and at the wreck, and neither the predikant nor Creesje were at all likely to act willingly as messengers, Hollert may have been nothing more than a last, despairing hope. He improved efficiency by cutting down on the number of landfalls his vessels made, and kept his crews healthy by feeding them lemons and plums, thus reducing the incidence of scurvy. The breech blocks were then abandoned at the foot of the cliffs, where they were eventually rediscovered more than years later. Throughout the story, the narrative of events on the islands is interspersed with details of history of the EIC; of the spice trade in general; of the process of shipbuilding in the Netherlands; of Java; pretty much anything at all connected with the story historically is brought up in here. Taking advantage of Dutch records and personal accounts o What if you organized a mutiny and on the night before the planned attack your ship ran aground on a tiny deserted island group about miles off the equally deserted west coast of Australia? The names of the survivors are nowhere given, but Pelsaert seems definite that only seven women survived the disaster. But the naked truth is that that of the original people on board the Batavia, only 68 made it safely to the port of Batavia Jakarta. You start killing. It's not entirely the writer's fault: most people in that story died, those who didn't often disappeared without a trace, and the few who survived and whom we can know something about are not used for anything but their part in the story.

Barsley was accused of abusing Benjamin Cook, Drum-Major in the marines, and striking John West, a drummer in the marines. It was alleged Hill had stolen bread valued at twopence, while Cole was charged with stealing two deal planks valued at ten pence. The men appeared before the Court of Criminal Judicature, the bench being made up of Judge-Advocate Collins and a number of naval and military officers - Captains Hunter, Meredith and Shea, and Lieutenants Ball, Bradley and Creswell.1,2 However, the first criminal prosecutions to take place on what is now Australian soil actually occurred in more dramatic circumstances in 1629.

Thereupon I walked upstairs and found all the sails aloft, the wind south west, the course at north east by north that night, and lay in the middle of a thick spume. But near the ship there was little breaching, but shortly after the sea was heard breaking hard round and about. I said, skipper, how have you wrought this that you through reckless inattention have hung us by our necks. He answered, what better could I do? I did not sleep, but did look out, for when I saw the far off foam I asked Hans the gunner3, what can that be? Whereupon he said, skipper it is the glint of the moon, upon which I have relied. I asked him what advice now, whereabouts he thought we were. He said, God knows that, this is a shoal that must be lying a long way from land unknown, and I reckon we are grounded at the tail.

Batavia Shipwreck Site and Survivor Camps Area 1629 – Houtman Abrolhos WESTERN AUSTRALI A The story of how the Dutch merchant vessel Batavia became wrecked off the coast of Western Australia in June 1629 and the bloody aftermath is a fascinating tale of maritime treachery, murder and ultimately, heroism. The Dutch East India Company was the dominant trading company in the East Indies (Indonesia) during the 17th and 18th centuries, with its headquarters in Batavia (Jakarta). Wrecks like Batavia’s demonstrated the necessity for more accurate charts and resulted in the commissioning of Vlamingh’s 1696 voyage. I n October 1628 a Company ship, the Batavia, set out from Holland on her maiden journey to Batavia carrying vast wealth in silver coins and jewels. Undermerchant Jeronimus Cornelisz conspired with other officers to mutiny and seized the ship for its cargo. On 4 June 1629 The mutineers were tried on the island for the murder of the Batavia struck a coral reef in the Houtman Abrolhos over 120 people. The ship’s Commander, mainland, where they became the first known European Francisco Pelsaert, set sail in a long boat to fetch help from residents of Australia. No further contact with them was Batavia, more than 900 nautical miles away along a largely ever recorded.

  • The Batavia Mutiny: Australia's First Military Conflict in 1629
1 The Batavia Mutiny: Australia’s First Military Conflict in 1629 Rupert Gerritsen Most Australians presume that the first military conflict in Australian history, one involving regular soldiers on both sides, occurred sometime after 1788. But that is not so. In fact the first military conflict on Australian soil actually occurred in 1629. It arose in rather unusual circumstances and was itself a most curious little „war‟. At about 5 a.m. on 4 June 1629 the Dutch Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) ship, the Batavia, on its way to Java with 316 people on board, struck Morning Reef in the Wallabi Group of the Abrolhos Islands, about 60 km off the central west coast of Western Australia.1 Approximately 275 people survived the initial disaster, most finding their way by various means to the nearest island, Beacon Island. But they were still in great peril as they had almost no food or water. The most senior officer, Commandeur Francisco Pelsaert,2 immediately began to search for water on nearby islands in the ship‟s yawl, without success. He then decided to make for the mainland in the yawl, accompanied by 50 of the crew. On 9 June, as they approached the coast to land, they were struck by a severe winter storm, and were nearly swamped. They hovered off the coast for almost 2 days, battling to stay afloat in the stormy seas, before heading north in the hope of finding calmer conditions and water, but were unable to land for a further 550 kilometres. When they did, they found little water and so the decision was made to make for Java, over 2000 kilometres away, to get help.

    • ~@~~ I MARITIME Scene of the Batavia mutiny From Ongeluckige Voyogie . The Batavia Story The Dutch East Indiaman Bafavia, wrecked in 1629 on Morning Reef in the Wallabi Group of the Abrolhos Islands, was the first of the Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VaC) ships to be lost off the coast of the Southland (Australia) . The story of the wreck, and the subsequent treachery and murders, captured the interest of the Dutch public in the 17th century. An account of the disaster was published in Amsterdam, in 1648, in a richly illustrated book by Jan Jansz-Ongeluckige Voyagie, Van't Schip Batavia, Nae de Oost Indien (Unlucky Voyage of the Ship Batavia to the East Indies). The Batavia, flagship of a convoy, left Texel on 28 October 1628 under the command of Francisco Pelsaert, bound for the vaC's trading centre Batavia (modern Jakarta). About 316 people were on board, including women and children. plans for mutiny, led by the under-merchant, Jeronimus Cornelisz, with certain officers and crew, were already well underway when the ship struck a reef in the early morning of 4 June 1629. The night watch had sighted white surf ahead but had assumed it was moonlight reflected from the waves . More than 250 of the people on board managed to reach nearby small islands, but little water or food was saved from the wreck . Commander Pelsaert, skipper Jacobsz and 46 crew took the Batavia's two small boats the next day in search of water. The trip was unsuccessful and a decision was made to continue to Batavia to get help and rescue for the castaways.
