Bird Observer VOLUME 39, NUMBER 2 APRIL 2011 HOT BIRDS On November 20 the Hampshire Bird Club was waiting at Quabbin headquarters for the rest of the group to arrive when Larry Therrien spotted a flock of 19 swans in the distance— Tundra Swans! Ian Davies took this photograph (left). Since 2003 Cave Swallows have been a specialty of November, showing up in coastal locations in increasing numbers over the years. This year there was a flurry of reports along the New England coast. On Thanksgiving Day, Margo Goetschkes took this photograph (right) of one of the birds at Salisbury. On November 30, Vern Laux got a call from a contractor reporting a “funny bird” at the Nantucket dump. Vern hustled over and was rewarded with great views of this Fork-tailed Flycatcher (left). Imagine: you’re photographing a Rough- legged Hawk in flight, and all of a sudden it is being mobbed—by a Northern Lapwing (right)! That’s what happened to Jim Hully on December 2 on Plum Island. This is only the second state record for this species, the first being in Chilmark in December of 1996. On April 9, Keelin Miller found an interesting gull at Kalmus Beach in Hyannis. As photographs were circulated, opinions shifted toward a Yellow-legged Gull (left). Check out Jeremiah Trimble’s photo from April 13. Gough Date: September 30, 2018 iii Abstract Set out in three volumes (Vol. 1 Thesis, Vol. 2 Transcriptions, Vol. 3 Appendices) and engaging the history of jazz transmission, this study investigates the ways aspiring jazz pianists practise in order to develop their own personal voice or musical identity, the supreme goal of the jazz musician. To date, this process has not been well served by research. It is commonly held that being an improvisational art form, jazz cannot be taught, at least not in a conventional way, and that jazz musicians search out for themselves what they wish to learn and who they wish to learn it from. When around the middle of last century jazz instruction began to move from the street and club to the formal institution, many experts became alarmed that this would have a homogenising effect on the music. -

For blurred pages, a good image of the page can be found in the adjacent frame. If copyrighted materials were deleted, a target note will appear listing the pages in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photographed, a definite method of “sectioning” the material has been followed. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again-beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. -

Two approaches are possible: (a) tree- based, Hennigian approach will look for main dichotomies inside so-called “Tree of Life”; and (b) space-based, Linnaean approach will look for the key differences inside “Natural System” multidimensional “cloud”. Despite of clear advantages of tree-like approach (easy to develop rules and algorithms; trees are self-explaining), in many cases the space-based approach is still prefer- able, because it let us to summarize any kinds of taxonomically related da- ta and to compare different classifications quite easily. Home where I was raised. Roundeau Ranch, Tygh Ridge, Wasco County, Oregon. READ IT AND SLEEP By William L. (Bill) Hulse I was born in Sherman County on August 4, 1920 to Roy Paul and Mary Jane Hulse. Dad was a farmer and storekeeper and mother was a schoolteacher. They moved from Sherman County to Tygh Ridge in Wasco County in the winter of 1919 and 1920. Mother had been doctoring in Moro with Dr. Poly, so she went back to Moro for my birth. Both my brother Paul and sister Janet were born in Sherman County. We lived on and farmed the old Roundeau Ranch, which had been purchased by Al- fred Dillinger. In the early part of the depression the ranch was lost to the Eastern Oregon Land Company. Dad eventually purchased it from them and then added the Murdock McLeod homestead. We attended Harmony Grade School, one and a quarter miles from our house. My grandkids would say “I suppose it was uphill both ways and through two feet of snow?” It wasn’t that bad, but we did walk. The school had one room and one teacher who was the janitor, nurse and mother hen to all of us kids. I remember one year – there were thirteen children in seven grades. There was no first grade that year. There were children from the family of George Hillgen, Walt Hillgen, Ellis Jones, Tommy Jones, Sid Baker, Clarence Garner, Joe McMurray and Roy Hulse. The teacher’s salary started at $50 per month and board and room. We had several local teachers: Beula Fraley McClean, Mary Sigman Hart, Opal Bene- dict Wiidanen and Frances Doud. -

Frédéric Archaux1 and Jacques Blondel2 Long-term changes of bird communities were investigated in areas with low-intensity forestry and farming practices in the French northern Alps (Giffre valley) by comparing two point count surveys carried out at the same spots in 1978/1980 and 2001/2002. Logistic regressions were applied to the 49 commonest woodland and farmland species controlling for habitat changes, variability in sampling conditions at the spot scale and year-to-year fluctuations in bird num- bers. This analysis revealed that the proportion of declining species was not different between trans-Saharan and resident species, but seven migratory species only were considered in the analysis. The proportion of decreasing species was higher in farmland than woodland species. The overall abundance of woodland species was constant, probably because forest habitats changed little over this time period. Farmland specialist species decreased where- as generalist open species remained stable, with the exception of white wagtail Motacilla alba. These trends are probably a response to the intensification in farming practice following greater mechanisation. The proportion of decreasing species among farmland birds did not differ between the Giffre valley, France and Europe, showing that the situation of farmland birds is not safer in alpine habitats.
