Redfield is a very concise expression of the simplicity of our language and of the prosaic nature of our sight. It is democratic painting—broad, without subtlety, vigorous in language if not absolutely in heart, blatantly obvious or honest in feeling. It is an unbiased, which means, inartistic, record of nature. —Guy Pene du Bois Among the New Hope impressionists, Edward Willis Redfield was the most decorated, winning more awards than any other American artist except John Singer Sargent. Primarily a landscape painter, Redfield was acclaimed as the most “American” artist of the New Hope school because of his vigor and individualism. Redfield favored the technique of painting en plein air, that is, outdoors amid nature. Tying his canvas to a tree, Redfield worked in even the most brutal weather. Painting rapidly, in thick, broad brushstrokes, and without attempting preliminary sketches, Redfield typically completed his paintings in one sitting. Although Redfield is best known for his snow scenes, he painted several spring and summer landscapes, often set in Maine, where he spent his summers. He also painted cityscapes, including, most notably, Between Daylight and Darkness (1909), an almost surreal, tonalist painting of the New York skyline in twilight.

This category includes traveling exhibitions organized by other museums and, in modern times, thematic exhibitions of the permanent collection. A complete list of special exhibition titles, with additional explanatory material, is available on the Academy website. Volume 1 of The Annual Exhibition Record provides an index to individual artists in most of the pre-1870 special exhibitions. John Folinsbee (1892-1972), Canal Bridge, c. 1923, oil on canvas, The School District of Philadelphia About the Artwork: Walter Emerson Baum helped acquire this painting for the Woodrow Wilson Middle School in May 1946, as well as a work by Harry Leith-Ross, a good friend of Folinsbee’s who shared a studio with him during their time in Woodstock, NY. Baum frequently attended auctions and gallery exhibitions on behalf of Principal Dudley and received a commission. Keeping to his usual budget, Dudley paid $300 for each painting. Later, he commissioned framemaker and craftsman Frederick Harer to create the frames for each of the works. Canal Bridge was painted earlier in Folinsbee’s career, when he employed more impression- istic elements, including brighter colors, looser brushwork, and capturing the effects of light on the landscape.

Anne Yost Whitesell (b.1911) oil on canvas H. 20 x W. 24 inches Collection Bucks County Intermediate Unit #22 Biography Nunamaker Farmhouse was painted by Anne Yost Whitesell. Ann Yost Whitesell has enjoyed the beauty of Pennsylvania her entire life. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she has captured the wonders of the beautiful outdoors and magnificent landscapes through her paintings in the impressionist style. Living today in the Lehigh Valley, she has worked and displayed with some of the best- known Pennsylvania impressionists. Whitesell studied under Dr. Walter Emerson Baum and under Melvin Stalk of Cedar Crest College. Baum and Whitesell eventually developed a friendship. Early on, she was asked to instruct classes at the Baum School of Art, and even at the age of 75, was asked back to teach again. During the 1950s, Baum commented on her snow scenes and Allentown street scenes. Whitesell also had the opportunity to share ideas with Edward Redfield and found herself influenced by his style. Like Redfield, oil landscapes were her focus. Her paintings of farms of Lehigh Valley, Northampton, and Bucks counties became her main concentration. She even painted serene city scenes that seemed to deny the sometimes-harsh realities of urban life. Ann has exhibited her paintings in New York, Philadelphia, Boca Raton, Greenwich, and other areas in Pennsylvania including Bucks County and Lehigh Valley. She has also received many awards and honorable mentions in juried shows and exhibitions such as the Art Alliance Foundation Award, top prizes at the Hess Brothers Art Exhibit in Philadelphia, and at the Woodmere Art Gallery in Philadelphia.
