Realism Realism 1861- 1914: An artistic movement begun in 19th century France. Artists and writers strove for detailed realistic and factual description. They tried to represent events and social conditions as they actually are, without idealization. This form of literature believes in fidelity to actuality in its representation. Realism is about recreating life in literature. Realism arose as an opposing idea to Idealism and Nominalism. Idealism is the approach to literature of writing about everything in its ideal from. Nominalism believes that ideas are only names and have no practical application. Realism focused on the truthful treatment of the common, average, everyday life. Realism focuses on the immediate, the here and now, the specific actions and their verifiable consequences. Realism seeks a one-to-one relationship between representation and the subject. This form is also known as mimesis. Realists are concerned with the effect of the work on their reader and the reader's life, a pragmatic view. Pragmatism requires the reading of a work to have some verifiable outcome for the reader that will lead to a better life for the reader. This lends an ethical tendency to Realism while focusing on common actions and minor catastrophes of middle class society. Realism aims to interpret the actualities of any aspect of life, free from subjective prejudice, idealism, or romantic color. It is in direct opposition to concerns of the unusual, the basis of Romanticism. Stresses the real over the fantastic. Seeks to treat the commonplace truthfully and used characters from everyday life. This emphasis was brought on by societal changes such as the aftermath of the Civil War in the United States and the emergence of Darwin's Theory of Evolution and its effect upon biblical interpretation. -

Review Essay: Grappling with “Big Painting”: Akela Reason‟s Thomas Eakins and the Uses of History Adrienne Baxter Bell Marymount Manhattan College Thomas Eakins made news in the summer of 2010 when The New York Times ran an article on the restoration of his most famous painting, The Gross Clinic (1875), a work that formed the centerpiece of an exhibition aptly named “An Eakins Masterpiece Restored: Seeing „The Gross Clinic‟ Anew,” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.1 The exhibition reminded viewers of the complexity and sheer gutsiness of Eakins‟s vision. On an oversized canvas, Eakins constructed a complex scene in an operating theater—the dramatic implications of that location fully intact—at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. We witness the demanding work of the five-member surgical team of Dr. Samuel Gross, all of whom are deeply engaged in the process of removing dead tissue from the thigh bone of an etherized young man on an operating table. Rising above the hunched figures of his assistants, Dr. Gross pauses momentarily to describe an aspect of his work while his students dutifully observe him from their seats in the surrounding bleachers. Spotlights on Gross‟s bloodied, scalpel-wielding right hand and his unnaturally large head, crowned by a halo of wiry grey hair, clarify his mastery of both the vita activa and vita contemplativa. Gross‟s foil is the woman in black at the left, probably the patient‟s sclerotic mother, who recoils in horror from the operation and flings her left arm, with its talon-like fingers, over her violated gaze. -

1 VIOLET OAKLEY: PENNSYLVANIA’S PREMIERE MURALIST Susan Hamburger Paper and slide presentation Pennsylvania Historical Association October 14, 1995 [SLIDE 1] Violet Oakley--a versatile portraitist, illustrator, stained glass artisan, and muralist--earned a reputation as the first American woman artist to succeed in the predominantly-male architectural field of mural decoration. Her strong commitment to her religion and world peace influenced her art as well as her life. [SLIDE 2] Oakley was born in Bergen Heights, New Jersey, to the artistic family of Arthur Edmund Oakley and Cornelia Swain Oakley. Both of her grandfathers, George Oakley and William Swain, belonged to the National Academy of Design and two of her aunts studied painting in Munich with Frank Duveneck. She believed that her compulsion to draw was “hereditary and chronic.” She once commented that she must have been “a monk in some earlier state of existence....The abbesses and sisters were too busy nursing the sick and doing fine needleworks. I never heard of them illuminating manuscripts. I am quite sure I was a monk.” 1 The youngest of three children, Violet followed her sisters Cornelia and Hester in learning the acceptable feminine skills of poetry writing, piano playing, 2 and sketching. While Hester attended Vassar College, Violet’s asthma prevented her from obtaining a college education which her parents thought too rigorous for her physical condition. She never let the asthma impede her artistic education or career. In 1892, at the age of eighteen, Oakley commuted to New York City to study at the Art Students’ League with Irving R. -

Redfield is a very concise expression of the simplicity of our language and of the prosaic nature of our sight. It is democratic painting—broad, without subtlety, vigorous in language if not absolutely in heart, blatantly obvious or honest in feeling. It is an unbiased, which means, inartistic, record of nature. —Guy Pene du Bois Among the New Hope impressionists, Edward Willis Redfield was the most decorated, winning more awards than any other American artist except John Singer Sargent. Primarily a landscape painter, Redfield was acclaimed as the most “American” artist of the New Hope school because of his vigor and individualism. Redfield favored the technique of painting en plein air, that is, outdoors amid nature. Tying his canvas to a tree, Redfield worked in even the most brutal weather. Painting rapidly, in thick, broad brushstrokes, and without attempting preliminary sketches, Redfield typically completed his paintings in one sitting. Although Redfield is best known for his snow scenes, he painted several spring and summer landscapes, often set in Maine, where he spent his summers. He also painted cityscapes, including, most notably, Between Daylight and Darkness (1909), an almost surreal, tonalist painting of the New York skyline in twilight. -

Prior to 1860, Americans had been taught to think of themselves as exceptional in many ways, and they had grown used to viewing the North American continent as a great blank canvas it was their manifest destiny to inscribe. But after 1865, with the end of the Civil War and the first assassination of an American president, Americans required a new narrative to tell themselves about themselves. -

Even if his later plays proved less popular than the early classics, Miller’s dramatic output has received regular critical attention, while his long and eventful life keeps arousing the biographers’ curiosity. However, most of the academic works on Miller’s dramatic texts are much too anchored on a thematic perspective: they study the plays as deconstructions of the American Dream, as a rebuke of McCarthyism or any kind of political persecution, as reflections on the concepts of collective guilt and denial in relation to traumatizing events, such as the Great Depression or the Holocaust. Especially within the Anglo-American critical tradition, Miller’s plays are rarely studied as dramatic objects whose performative nature implies a certain range of formal specificities. Neither are they seen as part of the 20th century dramatic and theatrical attempts to overcome the canons of Realism. In this dissertation, I intend, first of all, to frame Miller’s dramatic output within the American dramatic tradition. -
