Zeno of Citium Greece 331 B.C. – 256 B.C. • Started His Career As A Zeno of Citium Greece 331 B.C. – 256 B.C. • Started his career as a merchant, was then shipwrecked in Athens. Studied Socrates, Xenophon, and Crates the Cynic; started his own type of philosophy, Stoicism. • Zeno’s original Stoicism – which sometimes differs from later versions of Stoicism – features the concept of Natural Law. Being rational, humans can discover Natural Law, and live according to it: this is simultaneously being in harmony with nature, and being virtuous. Part of being in harmony with nature is to accept the inevitable, and embrace it – hence the everyday definition of “Stoic” as opposed to the philosophical use of the term. Humans should resist the passions, and prefer reason. Zeno’s four key virtues are: wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance. Zeno was opposed to slavery, and emphasized human equality and the idea that people should help each other (mutual aid); perhaps it was for these reasons that he was not popular in Athens. Zeno thought of the universe as a giant life form, with its own mind. Thus there is a link between physics, logic, philosophy, and ethics. Zeno embraced the Aristotle-like notion of moderation and temperance. Stoics participate in society in the mode of “permanent protest” – contrasting to the cynics, who felt no obligation to engage in politics. Zeno thought that men and women should dress alike. All that differs one man from another is virtue. Wrote his own “Republic” which differs markedly from Plato’s. Excessive desire or revulsion cause only pain. The ideal society would need know legal system, if all rational citizens would follow Natural Law. • Zeno’s Stoicism would become very popular, not in Greece, but centuries later, in Rome. Some Romans developed their own versions of Stoicism, which differ slightly from Zeno’s. Some historians see similarities between Stoicism and Christianity, but other see the two as opposed. • “There are, thus, two problems: first, if something is described as Stoic, it might have been unrecognizable to Zeno; secondly, even when it is explicitly attributed to Zeno, it may be expressed in a way which is more appropriate to later thinkers than to Zeno.” • Committed suicide after stubbing his toe, saying, “I’m coming; why do you call me?” He felt that it was a sign that his time had come. .

He earned his basic education in philosophy after four years of tutoring, and at the age of 18, Epicurus served in the military for two years in Athens. There, he purchased some land and founded a school which was given the name of ‘The Garden’, for its construction in the garden of his house. Epicurus was the first Greek philosopher to attempt to break free society from religious superstitions by preaching that God does not punish or reward humans, and that a man’s sole objective should be to form a self-sufficient and happy life by surrounding oneself with reliable and cherished friends. Epicurus was a strong advocate of free will. The development of a pleasant and comfortable life, in his view, was the core purpose of life, and good and bad consequences could only be evaluated on the principles of pain and pleasure. Epicurus believed that whatever serves to provide pleasure can be termed as good, and whatever leads to discomfort can be termed as bad.

This led to a crisis in 339 B.C.     Lecture 5. Zeno's Four Paradoxes of Motion Science of infinity In Lecture 4, we mentioned that a conflict arose from the discovery of irrationals. The Greeks' rejection of irrational numbers was essentially part of a general rejection of the infinite process. In fact, until the late 19th century most mathematicians were reluctant to accept infinity. In his last observations on mathematics1, Hermann Weyl wrote: \Mathematics has been called the science of the infinite. Indeed, the mathematician invents finite constructions by which questions are decided that by their very nature refer to the infinite. That is his glory." Besides the conflict of irrational numbers, there were other conflicts about the infinite process, namely, Zeno's famous paradoxes of motion from around 450 B.C.     Stoicism A school of thought that flourished in Greek and Roman antiquity. It was one of the loftiest and most sublime philosophies in the record of Western civilization. In urging participation in the affairs of man, Stoics have always believed that the goal of all inquiry is to provide man with a mode of conduct characterized by tranquillity of mind and certainty of moral worth. Nature and scope of Stoicism For the early Stoic philosopher, as for all the post-Aristotelian schools, knowledge and its pursuit are no longer held to be ends in themselves. The Hellenistic Age was a time of transition, and the Stoic philosopher was perhaps its most influential spokesman. A new culture was in the making. The heritage of an earlier period, with Athens as its intellectual leader, was to continue, but to undergo many changes. If, as with Socrates, to know is to know oneself, rationality as the sole means by which something outside of the self might be achieved may be said to be the hallmark of Stoic belief. As a Hellenistic philosophy, Stoicism presented an ars vitae, a way of accommodation for people to whom the human condition no longer appeared as the mirror of a universal, calm, and ordered existence. Reason alone could reveal the constancy of cosmic order and the originative source of unyielding value; thus, reason became the true model for human existence. To the Stoic, virtue is an inherent feature of the world, no less inexorable in relation to man than are the laws of nature. The Stoics believed that perception is the basis of true knowledge.

JAVIER CAMPOS DAROCA (University of Almería — Spain) 1 Abstract: In the 32nd Oration “On Pleasure”, by Maximus of Tyre, a defence of hedonism is presented in which Epicurus himself comes out in person to speak in favour of pleasure. In this defence, Socrates’ love affairs are recalled as an instance of virtuous behaviour allied with pleasure. In this paper we will explore this rather strange Epicurean portrayal of Socrates as a positive example. We contend that in order to understand this depiction of Socrates as a virtuous lover, some previous trends in Platonism should be taken into account, chiefly those which kept the relationship with the Hellenistic Academia alive. Special mention is made of Favorinus of Arelate, not as the source of the contents in the oration, but as the author closest to Maximus both for his interest in Socrates and his rhetorical (as well as dialectical) ways in philosophy.

They may be useful for anybody interested in Thales. They are not an essay, though they may lead to one. I focus mainly on the ancient sources that we have, and on the mathematics of Thales. I began this work in preparation to give one of several - minute talks at the Thales Meeting (Thales Buluşması) at the ruins of Miletus, now Milet, September , . The talks were in Turkish; the audience were from the general popu- lation. I chose for my title “Thales as the originator of the concept of proof” (Kanıt kavramının öncüsü olarak Thales). An English draft is in an appendix. The Thales Meeting was arranged by the Tourism Research Society (Turizm Araştırmaları Derneği, TURAD) and the office of the mayor of Didim. Part of Aydın province, the district of Didim encompasses the ancient cities of Priene and Miletus, along with the temple of Didyma. The temple was linked to Miletus, and Herodotus refers to it under the name of the family of priests, the Branchidae. I first visited Priene, Didyma, and Miletus in , when teaching at the Nesin Mathematics Village in Şirince, Selçuk, İzmir. The district of Selçuk contains also the ruins of Eph- esus, home town of Heraclitus. In , I drafted my Miletus talk in the Math Village. Since then, I have edited and added to these notes.
