Epicurus Epicurus Was Born in February 341 BCE
Epicurus Epicurus was born in February 341 BCE. He earned his basic education in philosophy after four years of tutoring, and at the age of 18, Epicurus served in the military for two years in Athens. After completing his education, Epicurus began teaching around the Aegean, eventually settling back in Athens. There, he purchased some land and founded a school which was given the name of ‘The Garden’, for its construction in the garden of his house. The Garden soon became a notable institute for the progress of philosophical education, and it also held the exclusivity of being the first philosophical Greek institute that allowed women to take part in learning. Epicurus strongly advocated friendship as an important root for a happy and fulfilling life, and thus, his school provided the community with the opportunity to interact and form constructive relationships. Epicurus has played an extremely vital role in the progress of science as a discipline. Epicurus was the first Greek philosopher to attempt to break free society from religious superstitions by preaching that God does not punish or reward humans, and that a man’s sole objective should be to form a self-sufficient and happy life by surrounding oneself with reliable and cherished friends. Epicurus was a strong advocate of free will. The development of a pleasant and comfortable life, in his view, was the core purpose of life, and good and bad consequences could only be evaluated on the principles of pain and pleasure. Epicurus believed that whatever serves to provide pleasure can be termed as good, and whatever leads to discomfort can be termed as bad. -

Version 1.0 July 2006 Josiah Ober Princeton University Abstract: Socrates was both a loyal citizen (by his own lights) and a critic of the democratic community’s way of doing things. This led to a crisis in 339 B.C. In order to understand Socrates’ and the Athenian community’s actions (as reported by Plato and Xenophon) it is necessary to understand the historical and legal contexts, the democratic state’s commitment to the notion that citizens are resonsible for the effects of their actions, and Socrates’ reasons for preferring to live in Athens rather than in states that might (by his lights) have had substantively better legal systems. JOHN ROBINSON Windham College Anaximander and the Problem of the Earth’s Immobility* N the course of his review of the reasons given by his predecessors for the earth’s immobility, Aristotle states that “some” attribute it I neither to the action of the whirl nor to the air beneath’s hindering its falling : These are the causes with which most thinkers busy themselves. But there are some who say, like Anaximander among the ancients, that it stays where it is because of its “indifference” (όμοιότητα). For what is stationed at the center, and is equably related to the extremes, has no reason to go one way rather than another—either up or down or sideways. And since it is impossible for it to move simultaneously in opposite directions, it necessarily stays where it is.1 The ascription of this curious view to Anaximander appears to have occasioned little uneasiness among modern commentators. -

However, there is no clear consensus among inter- Opreters about how to read it. The only noncontroversial point in interpreting the work seems to be that in it, Parmenides did something pro- found to philosophy. Despite this collective obligation to acknowledge Par- menides’ unique innovation (whatever it may be), it has become popular to read Parmenides as relying on a modal fallacy to make his argument. This would be an embarrassing mistake for such an influential work, especially given the argument’s deductive appearance. In this paper, I will outline the modal fallacy that Parmenides is accused of and argue for an interpretation that is free of the fallacy. I. The Alleged Modal Fallacy The critical fragment we must examine to decide the question is B6.1–2, in which the fallacy is supposed to occur: crhV toV levgein te noei`n t' ejoVn e!mmenai e!sti gaVr ei^nai, mhdeVn d' oujk e!otin . I investigate digressions and excurses on mountains, rivers, and certain myths associated aetiologically with the land, and demonstrate how Stoic physics and cosmology – in particular the concepts of cosmic (dis)order, collapse, and conflagration – play a role in the way Lucan writes about the landscape in the context of a civil war poem. Building on previous analyses of the Bellum Civile that provide background on its literary context (Ahl, 1976), on Lucan’s poetic technique (Masters, 1992), and on landscape in Roman literature (Spencer, 2010), I approach Lucan’s depiction of the natural world by focusing on the mutual effect of humanity and landscape on each other. Thus, hardships posed by the land against characters like Caesar and Cato, gloomy and threatening atmospheres, and dangerous or unusual weather phenomena all have places in my study. I also explore how Lucan’s landscapes engage with the tropes of the locus amoenus or horridus (Schiesaro, 2006) and elements of the sublime (Day, 2013). -

The aim of this dissertation is to collect as much information as possible on agricultural practices in Macedonia from prehistory to Roman times and examine them within their social and cultural context. Chapter 1 will offer a general introduction to the aims and methodology of this thesis. This chapter will also provide information on the geography, climate and natural resources of ancient Macedonia from prehistoric times. We will them continue with a concise social and cultural history of Macedonia from prehistory to the Roman conquest. This is important in order to achieve a good understanding of all these social and cultural processes that are directly or indirectly related with the exploitation of land and agriculture in Macedonia through time. People who live in Europe and the Americas owe a great deal to the ancient Greeks…even the way they think about the world was shaped by these ancient people. Greek thinkers of that time believed the human mind could understand everything. Such people were and are called philosophers. The word philosophy comes from the Greek word for “love of wisdom.” The work of these early thinkers laid the foundations for such areas of study as mathematics, science, history, and political science. Many of these philosophers were also teachers. One of the earliest and greatest of the teacher-philosophers was Socrates. The Ideas of Socrates Socrates was a sculptor who lived in Athens. His true love was not carving stone but instead shaping minds. -

Spring 2019 Letter from the Chair by Andrew Feldherr ny of you dropping by East Pyne (and I hope you all will next time you are engulfed by the orange bubble) A will find a very different department. While we will never stop missing our recent retirees, Ted, Brent, Bob, and Christian (not to speak of Nino Luraghi, who left us to become Wykeham Professor at Oxford), the many wonderful new colleagues we have brought to Princeton during the same time period are making their presence felt all the more. This year it has been a special pleasure to welcome three new members of the faculty. Barbara Graziosi and Johannes Haubold have at last settled in East Pyne after their tremendous successes as professors of Greek at Durham, and Caroline Cheung, a scholar of Roman history and material culture, joins us from Berkeley by way of the American Academy in Rome. Each has brought exciting ideas for courses and new intellectual opportunities for us all. More reason for celebration comes from the exceptional honors won this year by our colleague Harriet Flower, who has also ended her time as Head of Mathey College. Last his term as chair of the department. It will be a fantastic spring, Harriet received the university’s highest honor for opportunity for him, and for all of us, as it has been a great achievements in the humanities, the Howard T. Behrman privilege for me to serve in that role. That privilege has been Award, and in case those laurels provided insufficient material a pleasure as well thanks to the wonderful support I received for resting, her most recent book, The Dancing Lares and from all my colleagues in the department and, in particular, the Serpent in the Garden (which really should have been the the incomparable contributions of Nancy Blaustein, our title of a mystery novel!) has just won a Goodwin Award department manager and everyone who works or has worked for Outstanding Publications from the Society for Classical in our office, Jill Arbeiter, Kai Laidlaw, Brittany Masterson, Studies.
