These roots are related to one another in ancient Indian writings, in which the cyclic rise and setting of sun and world is referred to as “the music of the spheres”, with the sun “humming the wheel of the world.” A proverb among Indian musicians states that “Through swara, Isvara (god) is realized.” The seven notes of the musical scale (Sargam) in Indian classical music are: Shadja, Rishabh, Gandhar, Madhyam, Pancham, Dhaivat and Nishad… shortened to Sa, Re (or Ri, depending on regional language), Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni SAT NAM A bij (seed) mantra that awakens the soul and gives you your destiny. Used as a greeting as well as a mantra it reinforces the divine consciousness in everyone. The essence is the identity of truth embodied in condensed form. Balances the five elements (tattvas). Sat = derived from “Satya”, meaning Truth or Real/the reality of one’s existence Naam = Vibrational identity. What we vibrate, we become. SA TA NA MA The atomic or Naad form of the mantra Sat Nam. The “Panj Shabd” expresses the five primal sounds of the Universe (sss, ttt, nnn, mmm, aaa). Increases intuition, balances the hemispheres of the brain, creates destiny. Catalyst for change. Describes the continuous cycle of life & creation. Sa = Infinity, totality of the Cosmos Ta = Life or Birth of Form from Infinity Na = Death or Transformation Ma = Rebirth SA RE SA SA Base mantra of all mantras. Melts adversity; takes away negativity from within you; awakens the infinite creative energy to burn away obstacles to achieving higher consciousness. Helps you conquer the wisdom of past, present & future. Gives you the capacity of effective communication so your words contain mastery and impact. Brings you peace & prosperity even if it wasn’t in your destiny. Sa Re Sa Sa, Sa Re Sa Sa, Sa Re Sa Sa, Sa Rang Har Re Har Har, Har Re Har Har, Har Re Har Har, Har Rang That Infinite Totality is here, everywhere. That creativity of God is here, everywhere. Sa = the infinite, the totality – God. Element of ether – subtle & beyond. The origin, the beginning, containing all other effects. Subtle & beyond. Har = creativity of the Earth. Power of manifestation. Tangible & personal. Ang = Ong – complete totality, with which Sa’s ether and Har’s earth are woven together. RA MA Institute • www.ramayogainstitute.com/venice Day 2 WORD! - Mantras & their Meanings - with True SUN & MOON & HEALING GURU, GURU, WAHE GURU, GURU RAM DAS GURU Ram Das means “God’s Servant”, and also references Guru Ram Das, the Fourth Sikh Guru, and the guardian of the Aquarian Age. This mantra was given to Yogi Bhajan by Guru Ram Das in his astral form. It invokes the qualities of Guru Ram Das – humility, relaxation, self-healing and emotional relief. It opens the Heart Center so that you can feel and effortlessly radiate universal love. “Wise, wise is the one who serves Infinity.” RA MA DA SA The primal sounds of Ram Das. This mantra is a healing mantra, and an attunement of the self to the universe. It stimulates the kundalini energy for healing. Goes through a circuit of the chakras, & activates the Neutral Mind (Guru Ram Das’ realm…), bringing balance. RA = the energy of the Sun – strong, bright & hot; energizes & purifies. MA = the energy of the Moon – receptive, cool & nurturing DA = the energy of Earth – secure, personal; the ground of action SA = the impersonal infinity – the cosmos in all of its open dimensions & totality. SA = repetition of Sa is the turning point. The first part of the mantra ascends and expands into the Infinite, and the highest and most subtle ether, and brings those qualities back down, interweaving ether with earth. SAY = the totality of experience – is personal; the embodiment of Sa SO = the personal sense of merger and identity HANG = the infinite, vibrating and real. Together, So Hang means “I am Thou” DHAN DHAN, RAM DAS GUR This is the mantra for miracles where the impossible becomes possible. This Sikh prayer or shabd is in praise of Guru Ram Das, who is able to manifest miracles. It is the realm of the heart, of the Neutral Mind, where all things become pure. Dhan dhan raam daas gur jin siri-aa tinai savaari-aa; Pooree hoee karaamaat aap sirajanhaarai dhaari-aa; Sikhee atai sangatee paarbrahm kar namasakaari-aa; Atal athaa-o atol too tayraa ant na paaraavaari-aa; Jinee too sayvi-aa bhaa-o kar say tudh paar utaari-aa; Lab lobh kaam krodh mo maar kadhay tudh saparvaari-aa; Dhan so tayraa thaan hai sach tayraa paisakaari-aa; Naanak too lehanaa toohai gur amar too veechaari-aa; Gur dithaa taa man saadhaari-aa Blessed, blessed is Guru Ram Das; the One who created you has also exalted You. You are such a miracle! The Creator has installed you on a throne. Your Sikhs, & all conscious people bow to you because you manifest God. You are unchanging, unfathomable, immeasurable; your limit cannot be perceived. Those who serve you with love are carried across the sea of existence. The five obstacles (greed, attachment, lust, anger, ego/pride) cannot exist where you are. Blessed is Your realm, and True is Your magnificent glory. You are Nanak, You are Angad, and You are Amar Daas the Guru. Oh, when I recognize you, my soul is comforted! RA MA Institute • www.ramayogainstitute.com/venice Day 3 WORD! - Mantras & their Meanings - with True POWER & PROJECTION AJAI ALAI Brings great sensitivity, and gives the ability to compute what people are actually saying. Chanted correctly, it gives the power to surpass anything, and that whatever you say must happen. “Whenever you are in trouble mentally or you are being attacked in one way or another, chant these words & opposition will dissolve in your face.” (Yogi Bhajan) Ajai Alai Invincible, Indestructible Abhai Abai Fearless, Unchanging Abhoo Ajoo Unformed, Unborn Anaas Akaas Imperishable, Etheric Aganj Abhanj Unbreakable, Impenetrable Alakkh Abhakkh Unseen, Unaffected Akaal Dy-aal Undying, Merciful Alaykh Abhaykh Indescribable, Uncostumed Anaam Akaam Nameless, Desireless Agaah Adhaah Unfathomable, Incorruptible Anaathay Pramaathay Unmastered, Destroyer Ajonee Amonee Beyond birth, Beyond silence Na Raagay Na Rangay Beyond love, Beyond color Na Roopay Na Raykhay Beyond form, Beyond shape Akarmang Abharmang Beyond karma, Beyond doubt Aganjay Alaykhay Unconquerable, Indescribable GOBINDAY, MUKANDAY (Guru Gaitri Mantra) A projective mantra that eliminates karmic blocks and past errors. Balances brain hemispheres, clears the subconscious mind, purifies the magnetic field and brings compassion and patience. TAPAS IN THE ---RG VEDA TAPAS IN THE RG VEDA By ANTHONY L. MURUOCK, B.A. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts McMaster University April 1983 MASTER OF ARTS (1983) McMaster University (Religious Studies) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: Tapas in the fuL Veda AUTHOR: Anthony L. Murdock, B.A. (York University) SUPERVISORS: Professor D. Kinsley Professor P. Younger Professor P. Granoff NUMBER OF PAGES: v, 95 ii ABSTRACT It is my contention in this thesis that the term tapas means heat, and heat only, in the Bi[ Veda. Many reputable scholars have suggested that tapas refers to asceticism in several instances in the RV. I propose that these suggestions are in fact unnecessary. To determine the exact meaning of tapas in its many occurrences in the RV, I have given primary attention to those contexts (i.e. hymns) in which the meaning of tapas is absolutely unambiguous. I then proceed with this meaning in mind to more ambiguous instances. In those instances where the meaning of tapas is unambiguous it always refers to some kind of heat, and never to asceticism. Since there are unambiguous cases where ~apas means heat in the RV, and there are no unambiguous instances in the RV where tapas means asceticism, it only seems natural to assume that tapas means heat in all instances. The various occurrences of tapas as heat are organized in a new system of contextual classifications to demonstrate that tapas as heat still has a variety of functions and usages in the RV.

Amritsar. It was due to his blessings when I met him in July 1991 that an ignorant person like me could study and understand Gurbani and write about the Guru' teachings. Bhagat Puran Singh was a great soul and even now, he guides and removes suffering of those who help his mission of running Pingalwara. I have seen that in many cases, when some people sent donations with full faith, their diseases were cured and problems solved.

  • Reports on Yamas and Niyamas
REPORTS ON YAMAS AND NIYAMAS Every year, students undergoing the 6 month Sadhana and teachers training are given assignments on one of he five Yamas and five Niyamas. This year during November 2009, Laura Biagi has compiled and presented this excellent work on the twins of Brahmacharya and Saucha. Excellent work from an excellent student!!- Editor REPORTS ON YAMAS AND NIYAMAS YAMAS: BRAHAMACHARYA Laura Biagi Generally translated as “restrain of sexuality”, this Yama – while involving the awareness and control of sexual energy – is not limited to sexuality as we understand it in the West. In Yoga 1 to 10, Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani writes that Brahmacharya is “the continuous residence in the principle of creativity”. The first step to take in this analysis and understanding is the relationship between the principle of creativity and the principle of sexual energy. Yamas are tools to control our animal nature and to progress in our human evolution. Let’s look at the evolutionary steps we took from being animals to being humans in relation to our sexuality. Animals use their sexual energy to pro- create . The procreative instinct is very strong in animals. It is vital ( vital comes from the Latin vita , life). Animals spend quite some time and energy mating, coupling, procreating, making a new nest, taking care of the young and so on. Animals have quite different habits in the way they use their sexual energy, too. As humans, we are still carrying with us some of the instincts and emotions of animals: most of us have probably felt one time or another a sexual attraction or repulsion, a sexual arousal, attachment to a mate, fear or loosing the mate, desire to find a mate, jealousy, passion, and so on.

Today is the birthday of one of the great saints of India, Sri Chaitanya, who lived about half a century [five centuries] before Sri Ramakrishna.
