PEN PEN Joins ABR ince the beginning of 2003, nine writers and journalists have been murdered worldwide, adding to International SPEN’s list of 400 who have been killed over the last ten years. In the same period, 769 other writers and journal- ists have been imprisoned, tortured, attacked, threatened, harassed and deported, or have disappeared, gone into hiding or fled in fear of their lives — simply for practising their profession. International PEN is a worldwide organisation of writers, consisting of 130 centres in ninety-one countries. PEN was founded in 1921 to promote friendship and cooperation among writers everywhere, regardless of their political positions. It fights for freedom of expression and opposes political censorship. Above all, it vigorously defends those writers who suffer under oppressive régimes. Over the years, PEN’s members have included eminent writers around the world, including Joseph Conrad, George Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, Thomas Mann, Nadine Gordimer, Arthur Miller, Margaret Atwood, Thomas Keneally and David Malouf. The Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa has declared: ‘In times of division between countries, PEN is one of the rare institutions to keep a bridge constantly open.’ In 1960 PEN established a Writers in Prison Committee to campaign on behalf of persecuted writers worldwide. The Committee currently monitors the cases of more than 1000 writers each year, lobbying governments to secure their re- lease. The Committee maintains contact with imprisoned writ- ers and their families, while also working through the UN to draw attention both to individual cases and to human rights abuses in specific countries. This year so far, twenty-eight writers have been released. -

From your reading of the novels, how would you say their ideas about responsibility differ? Hamish Matthews Considering the responsibility of the novelist in South Africa involves questions deeply embedded in the country's troubled history. The spectre of apartheid casts an unavoidable shadow over writers from white privileged society despite the breakdown of the political system of apartheid. With regard to the problem of the author's position Gallagher queries, ”how one can write for œ in support of œ the ”Other‘ without presuming to write for œ assuming power over œ the Other.‘ 1 The ”Other‘ is a term used to refer to the black majority, in that they had been so suppressed by apartheid, that their sudden integration into South African culture did not erase the ingrained difference projected during apartheid between the ”us‘ and ”them‘ of whites and blacks. There are two extremes in which the racist hierarchy can live on through art. In speaking for the ”Other‘ there is a risk of a continuing form of linguistic colonialism. At the other end of the scale is the counter-fear of an outright refusal to deal with the ”Other‘, accepting unbridgeable differences, straying toward recreating the rhetoric that formed apartheid. It is between these two fears that Coetzee and Gordimer carefully tread. Coetzee leans strongly towards the impossibility of representation, pushing language to its limit to expose the limitations of current literary conditions. -

TONI MORRISON DISCUSSION GUIDE (630) 232-0780 [email protected] AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY The second of the four children of George and Ramah (Willis) Wofford, Toni Morrison was born Chloe Anthony Wofford in Lorain, Ohio, a steel town twenty-five miles west of Cleveland. During the worst years of the Great Depression, her father worked as a car washer, a welder in a local steel mill, and road-construction worker, while her mother, a feisty, determined woman, dealt with callous landlords and impertinent social workers. "When an eviction notice was put on our house, she tore it off," Morrison remembered, as quoted in People. "If there were maggots in our flour, she wrote a letter to [President] Franklin Roosevelt. My mother believed something should be done about inhuman situations." In an article for the New York Times Magazine, Morrison discussed her parents' contrasting attitudes toward white society and the effect of those conflicting views on her own perception of the quality of black life in America. Ramah Wofford believed that, in time, race relations would improve; George Wofford distrusted "every word and every gesture of every white man on Earth." Both parents were convinced, however, that "all succor and aid came from themselves and their neighborhood." Consequently, Morrison, although she attended a multiracial school, was raised in "a basically racist household" and grew up "with more than a child's contempt for white people." After graduating with honors from high school in 1949, Toni Morrison enrolled at Howard University in Washington, DC. Morrison devoted most of her free time to the Howard University Players, a campus theater company she described as "a place where hard work, thought, and talent" were praised and "merit was the only rank." She often appeared in campus productions, and in the summers she traveled throughout the South with a repertory troupe made up of faculty members and students. -

Awarded by the Swedish Academy, the prize is given for excellence in literature as a representation or illustration of culture. The award is given for an author’s entire oeuvre—often after the publication of a seminal work. In the study of Nobel Prize-winning authors, we are studying those individuals who, according to the directive of Alfred Nobel, “have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind,” and, in the field of literature, “have produced the most outstanding work of an idealistic tendency.” Our focus will be on selected works of fiction, poetry, and drama by Nobel laureates as we discover more about our world and what it means to be human through the literature of its disparate peoples. We will also, inevitably and deliberately, interpret what we read through the lens of our faith as we meet writers and characters who do not share a Christian worldview. Finally, we will work on developing reading, writing, and critical thinking skills through online discussions, reading quizzes, and an essay. This course fulfills the Core Global Understanding Theme (Old Core) and the Core Literature Requirement (New Core), helping students to foster “an understanding of and engagement with global cultures in all their diversity” (Core Objective #4). -
