The paper used butterflies of the family Papilionidae as a model system for testing evolutionary hypotheses, and included a revision of the Papilionidae of the region, as well as the description of some 20 new species. Wallace argued that the Papilionidae were the most advanced butterflies, against some of his colleagues such as Bates and Trimen who had claimed that the Nymphalidae were more advanced because of their possession of vestigial forelegs. In a very important section, Wallace laid out what is perhaps the clearest Darwinist definition of the differences between species, geographic subspecies, and local ‘varieties.’ He also discussed the relationship of these taxonomic categories to what is now termed ‘reproductive isolation.’ While accepting reproductive isolation as a cause of species, he rejected it as a definition. Instead, species were recognized as forms that overlap spatially and lack intermediates. However, this morphological distinctness argument breaks down for discrete polymorphisms, and Wallace clearly emphasised the conspecificity of non-mimetic males and female Batesian mimetic morphs in Papilio polytes, and also in P. -

The Saturday Review. 427 THE MALAY ARCHIPELAGO. * o persons can write more charmmg books of travel than natu N ralists who unite to knowledge of their special subject great general powers of observation, and a fair share of literary skill. Mr. Darwin's voyage in the Beagle is a model of what such a book should be; and Mr. Wallace, whose share in supportiug Mr. Darwin's theory is well known, has written an account of his journeys in the Malay Archipelago which may be fairly put beside it. One circumstance about it is sufficiently significant. Mr. Wallace's journeys were spread over eight years, and more than six years have elapsed since his return, owing to ill-health and to the difficulties of arranging his large collections, amounting to over 125,000 specimens. Now it is obvious that had Mr. Wallace followed the example of book-making travellers, and tumbled out upon us voluminous masses of undigested diary and scientific disquisition, be might have composed a work from which the boldest reader would have shrunk in undisguised dismay. On the scale which some recent travellers have adopted, he would have filled a good-sized bookshelf. As it is, he has contented himself with two volumes of moderate size, of which he modestly says that they are" far too small for the extent of the subjects ' treated. Certainly, if it had heen his purpose to give us a hand book to the Archipelago, or an exhaustive disquisition upon its natural products, or even a full account of all his own ad ventures, the space would have been ridiculously small. -

Search | Glossary | Home << previous | next > > Natural Selection: Charles Darwin & Alfred Russel Wallace The genius of Darwin (left), the way in which he suddenly turned all of biology upside down in 1859 with the publication of the Origin of Species , can sometimes give the misleading impression that the theory of evolution sprang from his forehead fully formed without any precedent in scientific history. But as earlier chapters in this history have shown, the raw material for Darwin's theory had been known for decades. Geologists and paleontologists had made a compelling case that life had been on Earth for a long time, that it had changed over that time, and that many species had become extinct. At the same time, embryologists and other naturalists studying living animals in the early 1800s had discovered, sometimes unwittingly, much of the A visit to the Galapagos Islands in 1835 helped Darwin best evidence for Darwin's formulate his ideas on natural selection. He found theory. several species of finch adapted to different environmental niches. The finches also differed in beak shape, food source, and how food was captured. Pre-Darwinian ideas about evolution It was Darwin's genius both to show how all this evidence favored the evolution of species from a common ancestor and to offer a plausible mechanism by which life might evolve. Lamarck and others had promoted evolutionary theories, but in order to explain just how life changed, they depended on speculation. Typically, they claimed that evolution was guided by some long-term trend. Lamarck, for example, thought that life strove over time to rise from simple single-celled forms to complex ones. -

George Darwin was the fifth child of Charles Darwin, the first proponent of evolution. He initially trained as a barrister and was finally an astronomer, becoming Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy at Cambridge University and President of the Royal Astronomical Society. In between he was a mathematician and scientist, graduating as Second Wrangler in the Mathematics Tripos in 1868 from Trinity College Cambridge. Francis Galton was George Darwin’s second cousin. He began his studies in medicine, turning after two years to mathematics at Trinity College Cambridge. -

The last of the important Zusâtze (see pages 637-663) is devoted to an exposition of the theory of systems of simul taneous differential equations of the first order. Having thus passed in quick review the contents of the book, it is now apparent that the translator has certainly accom plished his purpose of making it more useful to the student of pure mathematics. There remains the question whether there are not other additions which would have been desirable in accomplishing this purpose. There is at least one which, in the reviewer's opinion, should have been inserted. In connection with the theory of formal integration by series it would have been easy to insert a proof of the convergence in general of the series for the case of second order equations; and one can but regret that this was not done. Such a treat ment would have required only a half-dozen pages; and it would have added greatly to the value of this already valuable section. The translator's reason for omitting it is obvious; he was making no use of function-theoretic considerations, and such a proof would have required the introduction of these notions. But the great value to the student of having at hand this proof, for the relatively simple case of second order equations, seems to be more than a justification for departing in this case from the general plan of the book; it seems indeed to be a demand for it. -

Shakuntala Manay Here is Nagesh’s story, the first recipient of TOSKAR Rolling Shield for the Best Orchid. His interest in growing plants started as a child of eight when he would pick up sprouting onions from Mom’s kitchen onion and plant them in the yard and watched them grow into green leeks. This got him into the hobby to grow vegetables. By this time he was 14. Later he turned to growing foliage plants like succulents, Anthuriums and Cacti. Thus he dared to enter into annual shows at Lalbagh and won many prizes. In “small homes garden” categories he won eight awards from Urban Art Commission such as “Best Maintained Building & Garden” “Pride of Bangalore” “Role of Honour” etc. Ex- commissioners of Bangalore City Corporation Late N. Laxman Rao and Late Mr. Parthsarathy would visit his house as Judges. He received these prestigious prizes amidst distinguished guests and dignitaries at Rajbhavan. Trophies gathered so fast that there was no place for them at home. Twenty years ago he got one orchid from Indo American Nursery. Thus he began collecting orchids from Kerala, North East India and Western Ghats. Now on his terrace of 800 sq ft he has 1500 orchids! Among these Dracula Orchid (Monkey face) which grows in cloud mountains of Mexico, Central America and Colombia is one of his special collections, and more than 15 varieties of Carnivorous Plants and many Tillandsias also add to his collection. -
