IN MY OPINION — This Is an exclusive column In the TIMES which la devoted to a discussion of educational topics on a state, national, and world level- The opinions expressed are those of our Neptune Township Superintendent of Schools, Dr. V. J. W.- Christie, and, of Course, do not necessarily reflect the opinions of this newspaper. This column will • appear at Irregular Intervals and it is our hope that you will w lto and let us know whether or not you find them provocative, THE EDITOR. All rights to reproduce the article, either in whole or in part, reserved hy the writer; ' ’ / / SCHOOLS HAVE THREE JOBS One is to equip people with the ability to read, write, calculate and think — skills all people need in order to fuiWg. tion effectively. We have reached a point where work e5^|v) perienees, the use of leisure time & even family relationships require the use of the written word. People can’t buy groc eries, fill out tax forms or understand installment contracts without the ability to calculate. Any reading, writing and arithmetic are useless without the ability to reason. A second task is providing people with the chance to learn particular skills needed to earn a living—as a doctor, bricklayer, secretary or engineer. But the speed 'of tech nological change dooms any- attempt to teach skills which will last a lifetime. We must therefore help people learn to respond fexibly to‘change which we cannot begin to pre dict. In the future, the ability to ask intelligent questions will count for more than the ability to give the right answers^ The third task ofjBur schools is to help people become iST' telligent critics of our society. Our children must not become passive consumers of the values and products of that society. Schools should not try to inculcate a single set of values, but they can teach people to be sensitive to values and to the MUSICAL ARTISTS — Anne Schubert, lyric soprano, and Marina need for making rational choices about them ..
