Núncia Santoro de Constantino, Historiadora, 2006. 8 Resumo Esta tese analisa a participação e contribuição dos músicos italianos que foram personagens importantes na constituição do primeiro corpo musical da Banda Municipal de Porto Alegre (1925-1950). A partir da análise da presença de musicistas peninsulares pretende-se avançar acerca da dinâmica da imigração qualificada, visto que esses artistas provenientes da Itália se inseriram na sociedade receptora para preencher uma necessidade do contexto musical porto-alegrense. Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar os fatores que proporcionaram a imigração desse grupo de artistas, a maneira como se integraram na sociedade, na qual foram acolhidos, e as contribuições que trouxeram. São destacadas as características do contexto e da formação musical na Itália e no Brasil. Os músicos peninsulares agregaram novas competências na esfera musical da capital gaúcha através da sua participação em iniciativas musicais, bem como no apoio do desenvolvimento da profissionalização da sua atividade. Esses também mantiveram através da música um elo com o seu grupo étnico e com a cultura do país de origem, participando em inúmeras ocasiões de festejos e associações relacionadas à Itália. Porto Alegre. 9 Riassunto Questa tesi analizza la presenza e il contributo di alcuni musicisti italiani che ebbero un ruolo importante nella formazione del corpo musicale della Banda Comunale di Porto Alegre (1925-1950). Investigando sulle traiettorie degli strumentisti italiani, l’intento è stato quello di studiare meglio le dinamiche dell’ immigrazione qualificata, considerando che si inserirono nella società di accoglienza per colmare un vuoto di specializzazione nel contesto locale. Lo studio si è concentrato sui fattori che permisero l’emigrazione di questi artisti, la loro integrazione nella nuova società e il contributo che apportarono. Si è dato un particolare rilievo alle caratteristiche del contesto formativo musicale tra l’Italia e il Brasile. I musicisti italiani aggregarono nuove competenze nella sfera culturale del capoluogo del Rio Grande del Sul attraverso la partecipazione a numerose iniziative musicali. Quindì si è insistito sul ruolo e sul contributo di questi italiani che si inserirono nel milieu artistico brasiliano della prima metà del novecento. Inoltre, si è osservato il legame che mantennero con il proprio gruppo etnico e con le proprie tradizioni musicali, così come la partecipazione all’associazionismo italiano. Porto Alegre. 10 Abstract This thesis analyzes the participation and contribution of the Italian musicians who were important personages in the constitution of the first musical body of the Municipal Band of Porto Alegre (1925-1950). From the analysis of the presence of peninsular musicians, it is intended to advance the dynamics of qualified immigration, since these artists from Italy were inserted in the receiving society to fill a need of the musical context porto-alegrense. This study aims to analyze the factors that provided the immigration of this group of artists, the way in which they were integrated in the society in which they were received, and the contributions they brought. The characteristics of the context and musical formation in Italy and Brazil are highlighted. The Italian musicians have added new skills in the musical sphere of the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul through their participation in musical initiatives, as well as in the support of the professional development of their activity. These also maintained through music a link with their ethnic group and the culture of the country of origin, participating in numerous occasions of festivities and associations related to Italy. keywords: Italian Musicians. Performance competitions are: Young Artist Competition, High School Soloist Competition, Convention Performers Competition, Flute Choirs Competitions, Professional, Collegiate, High School, and Jazz Flute Big Band, and a Masterclass Competition. These competitions provide opportunities for flutists ranging from amateurs to professionals. University/college flute choirs perform original manuscripts, arrangements and transcriptions, as well as the commissioned pieces, frequently at conventions, thus expanding substantially the repertoire for flute choir. The purpose of my work is to document commissioned repertoire for flute choir, music for five or more flutes, presented by university/college flute choirs and NFA sponsored flute choirs at NFA annual conventions. Composer, title, premiere and publication information, conductor, performer and instrumentation will be included in an annotated bibliography format. A brief history of the flute choir and its repertoire, as well as a history of NFA-sponsored flute choir (1973–2012) will be included in this document.

    Although Italians had migrated to Australia since the middle of the nineteenth century, it was not until the 1920s that they became aware that they were a community in a foreign land, not just isolated individuals in search of fortune. Their political, cultural, economic and recreational associations became an important factor. Many of them, although settled in Australia, still thought of themselves as an appendage of Italy, a belief strengthened by Fascism’s nationalist propaganda which urged them to reject alien cultures, customs and traditions. The xenophobic hostility shown by some Australians greatly contributed to the success of these propaganda efforts. Moreover, the issue of Fascism in Italy was a contentious one among Italians in Australia, a large minority fighting with courage and determination against Fascism’s representatives in Australia. This broad study of Italian immigrants before and during World War II covers not only the effects of Fascism, but also records the ordeal of Italian settlers in the cities and the outback during the Depression and the difficulties they faced after the outbreak of the war. It deals with a subject that has long been neglected by scholars and is an important contribution to the history of Italian migrants in Australia.     Matteo Pretelli Italian Migrants in Italian Exhibitions from Fascism to the Early Republic* From the time of Italy’s unification in 1861, the organization of exhibitions on the national territory, as well as the participation in exhibitions with a pavilion in foreign countries, became an instrument of nation-building for the liberally-oriented ruling classes that governed Italy from 1861 to 1922. Their ultimate goal was to finally achieve the complete unification of Italians – who had been politically and culturally divided for centuries – and persuade them to value the newly formed state. Additionally, they also sought to demonstrate the strength of the national economy and the industriousness of the Italian people. However, the goal of creating patriotic awareness in the Italian population was not generally an easy one to achieve, given the citizens’ reliance on strong local identities, and as such national expositions were seemingly unable to largely contribute to that scope.1 The beginning of massive outflows of Italians toward foreign countries in the 1880’s further complicated Italy’s nation-building ambitions. Migrants primarily exported their own local identities, whereas any sense of national belonging was scantly felt. Indeed, the brand new state was often conceived as a distant entity or even an enemy because of its intention to impose harsh taxes and long years of military service on the citizens.2 In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, emigration was a disputed topic in the political realm that divided those who believed the departures were a loss to the nation and those who thought the Italian communities that had settled in foreign countries would be instrumental to promoting the exportation of national goods and, * I wish to thank Nando Fasce, for his extremely competent comments.

    “When I was growing up in New York City, the New York Flute Club was my first exposure to the wider world of the flute and to the special camaraderie that flutists share.” —Robert Dick The New York Flute Club A Centennial History Nancy Toff Presidents The New York Flute Club: A Centennial History The beginnings were decidedly modest, but also a bit of a provocation in a New York City apartment building: in December 1920, Georges Barrère, principal flutist of the New York Symphony Orchestra and flute teacher at the Institute of Musical Art, invited 16 flutists to his apartment to play the Kuhlau Grand Quartet, four to a part. We don’t know what the neighbors thought, but the flutists were sufficiently inspired that they started a club. The New York Flute Club was officially incorporated on December 31, 1920; the first regular meeting took place on Georges Barrère January 9, 1921. Erwin Schulhoff (1894–1942) was a Czechoslovakian musician born in Prague, to a German-Jewish family, and whose life came to a premature end in 1942 at the Wülzburg concentration camp, near Weißenburg, Bavaria. Schulhoff’s life, compositional style, and two of his flute works are addressed in this dissertation: Sonata for Flute and Pianoforte, WV 86, and Concertino for Flute, Viola, and Double Bass, WV 75. Each work is considered as a discrete entity, and insight provided into the structure of the music; stylistic and compositional influences, form, phrase structure, and other aspects are discussed. The intended audience is the flutist seeking knowledge regarding the historical significance and performance of each piece. The analysis and summary of Schulhoff’s life and primary flute works will contribute to the understanding of performance scholarship of his music and provide a deeper understanding of the composer, from the perspective of musical and compositional style.

This dissertation demonstrates that American fascist sympathizers believed that Italy was coping better with the challenges of modernity than the United States. Fascist sympathizers argued that fascist squads revived older values of service and honor, even as Mussolini kept pace with a fast-moving society. They claimed that the corporate state was an up-to-date form of government, which protected Italians from the worst effects of the global depression. And, as the fascist state became increasingly totalitarian, they represented Italy as a place where men and women could transcend the grit and grind of modern life to find inner peace. American fascist sympathizers had various goals when they invoked Italy’s apparent successes in managing the challenges of modernity. First, they aimed to expose faults in their own society: the numbing effects of standardization; the erosion of higher ideals; the failure of government to protect Americans from the ravages of industrialization. Second, they suggested solutions to the United States’ problems: the reform of government to promote expertise in policymaking; and measures to create jobs and support the return to a simpler life.
