Atkinson Karen Pierson Copyright by Yoon Hee Kim 2013 Abstract The National Flute Association (NFA) sponsors a range of non-performance and performance competitions for performers of all ages. Non-performance competitions are: a Flute Choir Composition Competition, Graduate Research, and Newly Published Music. Performance competitions are: Young Artist Competition, High School Soloist Competition, Convention Performers Competition, Flute Choirs Competitions, Professional, Collegiate, High School, and Jazz Flute Big Band, and a Masterclass Competition. These competitions provide opportunities for flutists ranging from amateurs to professionals. University/college flute choirs perform original manuscripts, arrangements and transcriptions, as well as the commissioned pieces, frequently at conventions, thus expanding substantially the repertoire for flute choir. The purpose of my work is to document commissioned repertoire for flute choir, music for five or more flutes, presented by university/college flute choirs and NFA sponsored flute choirs at NFA annual conventions. Composer, title, premiere and publication information, conductor, performer and instrumentation will be included in an annotated bibliography format. A brief history of the flute choir and its repertoire, as well as a history of NFA-sponsored flute choir (1973–2012) will be included in this document. -

AEROPORTI DEL MEZZOGIORNO 2007 AEROPORTI DEL MEZZOGIORNO 2007 Alessandro Bianchi Ministro dei Trasporti Ho trascorso quasi trent’anni della mia vita in Calabria e a Reggio Calabria in particolare. Sono stati anni che ho interamente dedicato allo studio e alla pianifica- zione del territorio, per cui ho ben presente l’importanza di un efficiente sistema di mobilità per l’Italia meridionale e insulare. Le regioni dell’Italia del Sud sono attualmente dotate di un sistema aeroportua- le moderno e quindi lo sforzo che bisogna compiere è in direzione della piena inte- grazione con le reti di trasporto europee, affinché il Mezzogiorno d’Italia diventi la vera testa di ponte continentale verso i paesi della riva sud ed est del Mediter- raneo. Un vasto piano di interventi infrastrutturali negli aeroporti dell’Italia meridionale è in corso di attuazione in esecuzione di Accordi di programma quadro per il tra- sporto aereo sottoscritti con le singole regioni. Sono il frutto di una efficace collabo- razione istituzionale tra l’Unione Europea, che li ha finanziati con i fondi strutturali, le regioni, che hanno impegnato importanti contributi, e il Ministero dei Trasporti e delle Infrastrutture impegnato a centrare l’obiettivo di rendere migliore servizio al cittadino-utente. Comunque è l’intero panorama del trasporto aereo dell’Italia meri- dionale che potrebbe uscire profondamente rinnovato grazie agli interventi del PON Trasporti. Dal punto di vista territoriale la geografia articolata dell’Italia rende prioritarie le esigenze di consolidamento di un vasto network senza privilegiare solo le tratte più redditizie, e la continuità territoriale è prerequisito irrinunciabile perché l’Europa sia veramente unita e perché le barriere geografiche non si trasformino in ostacoli allo sviluppo economico. -

The Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the South East European Air Mail Connection to North America, 1939‐1941 Ratomir Zivkovic [email protected] I. Introduction • On September 3rd, 1939, France and Great Britain entered into the war with Germany. • PANAM changed the terminal point on its Southern Route from Marseille to Lisbon, Portugal, ( Foreign Air Mail Contract No. 18), on September 6th, 1939. • Ala Littoria service from Lisbon to Rome, so‐called “Route of the 45th parallel,” became major air mail route for the mail between continental Europe, Turkey and North America . II. The development of International Air Mail in the Kingdom of S.H.S. (Kraljevina S.H.S.), later Kingdom of Yugoslavia (Kraljevina Yugoslavia) A. Belgrade on the first transcontinental air route from Paris to Istanbul • Our Wings Club (Klub Naša krila) was formed December 1, 1918. • In March of 1923, Yugoslav government awarded a concession and signed an agreement on air carriage with the French company C.F.R.N.A. (Compagnie Franco‐Roumaine de la Navigation Aérienne). • Contracts were renewed with C.I.D.N.A. (Compagnie Internationale de la Navigation Aérienne) in 1926 and with Air France, successor of C.F.R.N.A. and C.I.D.N.A., in 1933. • Until 1927, mail was shipped by air only to the cities on the C.F.R.N.A. /C.I.D.N.A route. • On March 27th, 1927, a new Belgrade airport was opened in Zemun replacing the temporary Pančevo airport C.F.R.N.A./ C.I.D.N.A service: Paris, Strasbourg, Nuremberg, Prague, Warsaw, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest, Istanbul • First flight out of Belgrade (Pančevo Airport) to Paris was on April 16, 1923. -

Report on the Progress of Civil Aviation 1939 - 1945 Foreword by John Wilson When in the 1980s I was trying to unravel the exact story surrounding a PBY aircraft called "Guba" and its wartime career in carrying airmails to and from West Africa, I came across a voluminous report [Ref.1] in the Civil Aviation Authority (C.A.A.) Library which gave me the answers to most, if not all, of my questions, and enabled me to write a short booklet [Ref.2] on the vicissitudes of trying to keep an airmail service running in wartime conditions. The information contained in the report was so comprehensive that I was able to use it to answer questions raised by other researchers, both philatelic and aeronautic, but my response to requests for "a copy" of the full document had to be negative because I was well aware of the perils of copyright law as applied at the time, and also aware of the sheer cost of reproduction (I still have the original invoice for the photocopying charges levied by the C.A.A. -

HUMANITIES - Anno X, Numero 19, Giugno 2021 DOI: 10.6092/2240-7 715/2021.1.1- 37 Giuseppe La Greca Stromboli 16 marzo 1940 L’ultimo volo dell’I-Suto Incidenti aerei civili italiani tra le due guerre mondiali Premessa L'incidente dell'I-Suto è uno dei disastri aerei più gravi dell’aviazione civile italiana, evento eclissato dalle cronache nazionali per prassi dal regime fascista; non era il primo, ma l’ultimo in ordine di tempo prima dell’ingresso dell’Italia nella seconda guerra mondiale e registrerà la morte di 14 persone, 4 membri dell’equipaggio e dieci passeggeri, nove uomini e una donna. Racconterò, inoltre, dei diversi incidenti aerei dell’aviazione civile italiana (ed alcuni di compagnie straniere sul territorio nazionale) nel ventennio tra le due guerre mondiali. L’ultimo volo Non è una bella giornata quella del 16 marzo 1940, l’inverno è alla fine ma la nebbia ed il cattivo tempo imperversano sulle Eolie. Le condizioni meteo pessime contribuiranno in modo determinate negli eventi della giornata. Intorno alle 11, un forte rombo di motori viene avvertito nell’isola di Stromboli, nella zona conosciuta come Forgia Vecchia a sud-ovest dell’abitato, tuttavia, i soccorsi si attiveranno soltanto alcune ore dopo. Il primo allarme parte dal Centro R.T. di Capodichino intorno alle ore 12,30: (…) comunicazione pervenuta da Assistaereo Siracusa tramite Lido di Roma. I-Suto ore 10,20 sorvolava zona vietata Messina, ore 10,52 in 1 HUMANITIES - Anno X, Numero 19, Giugno 2021 comunicazione con Napoli per rilevamento. Ore 10,55 non si sentiva più. -

“When I was growing up in New York City, the New York Flute Club was my first exposure to the wider world of the flute and to the special camaraderie that flutists share.” —Robert Dick The New York Flute Club A Centennial History Nancy Toff Presidents The New York Flute Club: A Centennial History The beginnings were decidedly modest, but also a bit of a provocation in a New York City apartment building: in December 1920, Georges Barrère, principal flutist of the New York Symphony Orchestra and flute teacher at the Institute of Musical Art, invited 16 flutists to his apartment to play the Kuhlau Grand Quartet, four to a part. We don’t know what the neighbors thought, but the flutists were sufficiently inspired that they started a club. The New York Flute Club was officially incorporated on December 31, 1920; the first regular meeting took place on Georges Barrère January 9, 1921. The inaugural board (1920–44) consisted of Barrère, president; Mrs. Eliot John Wummer Sue Ann Kahn Henderson (professional name: May Lyle (1944–47) (1989–92) Smith), first VP; William Kincaid, then a Milton Wittgenstein Nancy Toff member of the New York Chamber Music (1947–52) (1992–95, 2008–11, 2018–present) Society, second VP; Milton Wittgenstein, Mildred Hunt Wummer Rie Schmidt on staff at WQXR, recording secretary; (1952–55, 1963–64) (1995–98) and flutist-composer Lamar Stringfield, Frederick Wilkins Patricia Spencer treasurer. (1955–57) (1998–2001) The first concert took place on February 6 Harry H.
