Dan Ellis Club Secretary IF YOU’RE reading this, then it’s good news – you’re reading a football programme, an increasingly endangered species. Like many things post-coved and in this ‘new normal’ there are lots of things different at our Non-League grounds now. The National League have given their clubs the option of not running programmes this year and we’ve seen similar in the EFL. In this digital world an increasing number of clubs are looking at those avenues rather than the printed page. Everyone will have their views on this traditional aspect of football match going. But here we are, in a programme, talking about competitive Non-League football. Hopefully that is as good to read as it is good to write. For many months now we’ve not had much competitive football to write about in The NLP. Yes, we had some play-off games, but the return this month of competitive football starting with the FA Cup has been most welcome. Of course, everything around the game is different. We’re all getting used to the added things we have to do. Book a ticket online beforehand, fill out a test and trace form, sanitise our hands as we enter the ground, follow one-way systems. It’s very different to what we left in March when the 2019-20 season stopped in its tracks. Players are turning up in kit, staying out at half-time for team talks – the current weather helps – and sitting apart on the bench. But, when the whistle goes, it’s back to the football we’ve all missed so much. Crowds being allowed back in stadiums was a massive breakthrough. Hopefully Steps 2 and above will soon follow because all clubs need that money coming through the gate. From a reporters point of view, we’ve never covered such a fluid situation. Things changed literally by the hour. Sometimes even within ten minutes of being told one thing, another call would come through saying it was now something else. It’s been a challenge! Without crowds it would have been impossible to start the season. Then the fears for clubs as soon as the pandemic broke out would have been multiplied. I remember one week, way back in the summer, being told four different opinions on the start date for 2020-21. One said September/October, another ventured November, someone else thought January and another, informed person, feared not at all! Thankfully the first person’s guess was correct but we all are aware it’s a fine line with cases on the rise again. Already we’re getting used to clubs withdrawing from the FA Cup at the last minute because of positive tests and there will no doubt be late cancellations of games throughout the season. We can all play our part. Help clubs stick to the crucial social distancing rules that need to be adhered to. Fill out test and trace forms and throw a couple of extra quid into the coffers. Every little helps. Including buying this programme.

Enjoy your football!

Felixstowe & Walton United Football Club aka ‘The Seasiders’ were formed in 2000 following the merger of Felixstowe Town and Walton United.

Formed in 1895, Walton United played at The Recreation ground in Recreation Way Walton while Felixstowe Town, formed five years earlier played at The Town Ground, Dellwood Avenue. The amalgamation in 2000 looked a good marriage for the right reasons. Walton United had just won the Suffolk Senior Cup and were on the up but with nowhere to go as the Recreation ground at Walton could not accommodate Eastern Counties League standard facilities. Felixstowe Town had been renamed Felixstowe Port & Town due to their sponsorship by the Port, but when that was withdrawn in 1999/2000 it left the Town club struggling to recover and maintain Eastern Counties League football. It looked and proved to be a good decision by both clubs that they therefore merged with Dellwood Avenue becoming their home Venue.

It was a struggle in the early years after the merger with relegation coming in 2002, but it offered the chance for the club to regroup and focus on the future with a growing youth set up and getting the basics right off the pitch and the club regained Premier Division status in 2006 when they finished runners up in Division One.

Tied by what can be done at their present home the club always found it difficult to compete with the top sides in the Premier Division with what was the unique task of raising and lowering of the floodlights before and after games and the restrictions placed on the club by the local authorities. The Seasiders remained positive throughout and now have the lights permanently erected during the football season and have an excellent youth set up including junior non-competitive youngsters at under 8 plus four girls sides and provide sporting facilities on The Peninsula from six through to adulthood.

At the end of the 2016/17 season a new clubhouse opened up pitch side to replace the old one which has transformed the club and by the end of the 2017/18 season, the Seasiders gained promotion to the Isthmian North Division at Step 4 for the first time in the clubs history and finished a respectable mid-table position. Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the NORMAL VISION X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours and how that would affect you, your teammate or your child.

There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth. The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA) decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at www.TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness. David Andrew Seaman, MBE (born 19 September 1963)

David is an English former footballer who played as a goalkeeper. In a career lasting from 1981 to 2004, he is best known for his time playing for Arsenal. He won 75 caps for the England national football team, and is the country’s second-most capped goalkeeper, after Peter Shilton. In 1997, he was awarded the MBE for services to football.

The peak of Seaman’s career was during his period as Arsenal and England goalkeeper in the 1990s and early 2000s. During his time at Arsenal, he won three league championships (1991, 1998, 2002), four FA Cups (1993, 1998, 2002, 2003), the League Cup in 1993 and the European Cup Winners Cup in 1994. During this time he also played for England in the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups, and Euro 96 and Euro 2000. As well as Arsenal, he also played in the for Manchester City, as well as making appearances in the Football League for Peterborough United, Birmingham City and Queens Park Rangers.

His save from Paul Peschisolido of Sheffield United in the 2002–03 AF Cup semi-final was described in the media as one of the best ever. Notable lows came with two costly errors, both from long-range efforts—conceding a last-minute goal in the 1995 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup Final to Nayim of , and conceding to a Ronaldinho free kick against Brazil in the 2002 FIFA World Cup quarter-final.

Seaman is left-handed, but threw the ball with his right arm and kicked with his right foot. He retired in 2004 due to a recurring shoulder injury. In June 2012, he was appointed goalkeeping coach of Combined Counties League club Wembley. Nicholas Vincent “Nick” Colgan (born 19 September 1973)

Nick is an Irish former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He is currently the goalkeeping coach at Wigan Athletic.

As a player, he was a goalkeeper from 1991 to 2013 and first briefly played for his hometown club Drogheda United between 1991 and 1992 before signing for Premier League side Chelsea. Whilst at Stamford Bridge he often found himself as back-up to the likes of Dmitri Kharine and Frode Grodas and spent time on loan at Crewe Alexandra, Grimsby Town, Millwall, Brentford and Reading.

He joined Bournemouth permanently in 1998 where he stayed for a year before a move to Scottish Premier League club Hibernian. Colgan made over 120 appearances in the league between 1999 and 2004 and went on to earn his first full international cap for the Republic of Ireland. In 2004 following a loan spell with Stockport County he joined Barnsley where he played for four years and also helping the club to promotion to the Football League Championship in 2006.

In 2008, he joined Ipswich Town as an understudy to Stephen Bywater but left the club a few months later after failing to make an appearance, and with that returned to the Premier League when he joined Sunderland. A year later he returned to Grimsby Town and was the first choice keeper when the club were to lose their Football League following relegation to the Conference. Colgan lost his place in the team the following year and was loaned out to Huddersfield Town before later making the move permanent.
