Machu Picchu Post-Cruise Extension Machu Picchu Explore Peru’s famed Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley on an 6-night Post-Cruise Extension land tour, Guayaquil to Lima. DAY 2 (Fri) Sacred Valley/Chinchero Arriving in Cusco after an early morning flight, begin your journey into the fabled Sacred Valley with a visit to the traditional weaving town of Chinchero. Descending into the valley, have lunch at a charming private estate filled with pre-Columbian, Inca, and colonial artifacts. After checking in at Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba (or similar) for your two night stay, take advantage of the hacienda’s activities before dinner—a trail hike, bird watching, making traditional Inca beverages, or relax while taking in the surrounding mountain views. (BLD) DAY 3 (Sat) Sacred Valley/Ollantaytambo Dive deeper into the Sacred Valley, on a guided walking tour of Ollantaytambo—laid out as it was in the 1500s and with its original structures. Ollantaytambo has been inhabited since the time of the Inca’s and is the best example in the region of a living Incan town. Learn of the strategic and religious importance of this hill town from the top of the ruins with sweeping views of the Sacred Valley. Stroll the town’s narrow streets, with time to soak up the history and visit the markets. After lunch at a local restaurant, return to the Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba to relax and enjoy the spa facilities, explore on your own, join an optional hike or other onsite hotel activity. (BLD) DAY 4 (Sun) Machu Picchu Celebrate one of the top destinations of world travel. Boarding the Vistadome in Ollantaytambo, join your guide on a journey through mountain forests and steep peaks, once part of the powerful Inca Empire. Arriving in Aguas Calientes, walk to the serene Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo (or similar) for pre check-in and an Andean lunch. Then it’s off to tour the crown jewel of the Inca civilization—Machu Picchu—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. A leisurely hike to the Puente Inca, or “Inca Bridge,” rewards with panoramic views of Machu Picchu. November 2016 ConservationVIP Volunteers on terraces overlooking the Urubamba River Executive Summary Conservation Volunteers International Program (ConservationVIP) organized and led a volunteer trip to the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu in November 2016, in collaboration with Peru’s Ministry of Culture, and the Ministry of Environment (National Service for Protected Area Management, SERNANP). The project was authorized by Doctor Vidal Pino Zambrano, Director de la Direccion Desconcentrada de Cultura Cusco - Ministry of Culture, and by engineer José Carlos Nieto Navarrete, Jefe of the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu for SERNANP. The projects were discussed with anthropologist José Fernando Astete Victoria, Jefe del Parque Arqueológico Nacional de Machupicchu. Twenty volunteers, including the two trip leaders, John Hollinrake and Dr. Bill Sapp, ConservationVIP Board Members, and el Licenciado Santiago Carrasco Bellota, performed 500 hours of volunteer work related to the following projects: Machu Picchu November 2016 Volunteer Trip Report Page 2 1. On Sunday, November 6, 2017, volunteers cleared Melinis minutiflora, known colloquially as pasto gordura, from 1.35 kilometers of Inca Trail between the Guard House and the Sun Gate, from 0.16 kilometers of the 50-steps portion of the Inca Trail between Wiñay Wayna and the Sun Gate, and from an approximately 1 meter buffer on either side of the trail. Dedication To those that came before us and left a legacy in stone that we are trying to comprehend. Although many archaeologists don’t like people outside of their field “digging into the past” so to speak when conventional explanations don’t satisfy, I feel it is essential. If the engineering feats of the Ancient Ones cannot or indeed are not answered satisfactorily, if the age of these stone works don’t include consultation from geologists, and if the oral traditions of those that are supposedly descendants of the master builders are not taken into account, then the full story is not present. One of the best examples of this regards the great Sphinx of Egypt, dated by most Egyptologists at about 4500 years. It took the insight and questioning mind of John Anthony West, veteran student of the history of that great land to invite a geologist to study the weathering patterns of the Sphinx and make an estimate of when and how such degradation took place. In stepped Dr. Robert Schoch, PhD at Boston University, who claimed, and still holds to the theory that such an effect was the result of rain, which could have only occurred prior to the time when the Pharaoh, the presumed builders, had existed. And it has taken the keen observations of an engineer, Christopher Dunn, to look at the Great Pyramid on the Giza Plateau and develop a very potent theory that it was indeed not the tomb of an egotistical Egyptian ruler, as in Khufu, but an electrical power plant that functioned on a grand scale thousands of years before Khufu (also known as Cheops) was born.
