Si el vuelo llega en la mañana, este día será libre en Lima, teniendo tiempo para comenzar a conocer esta inmensa ciudad, acercarse a la costa, muy cercana al hotel, visitar sus valiosos Museos, etc. Alojamiento. Día 2º: Lima. Visita a la ciudad FICHA TÉCNICA Visita a esta antigua ciudad, conocida como la Ciudad de los Reyes, “3 veces coronada”, que guarda, nostálgica, entornos de las épocas por las que ha ido pasando, desde su fundación en 1.535: colonial, virreinal, republicana y modernista. No en vano, todo su gran casco antiguo (conforma por sí solo un Municipio), es Patrimonio de la Humanidad, destacando la Catedral, el Convento y Catacumbas de San Francisco, el Palacio de Gobierno, sus casonas palaciegas con artísiticas balconadas talladas, iglesias del Barroco mestizo, hoteles de época, y en otros entornos, la Alameda de los Descalzos, el Puerto del Callao, el Puente de los Suspiros, mencionados en las antiguas trovas criollas. Resto del día libre, en el que recomendamos visitar algunos Museos, como el del Oro del Perú o el Larco Herrera, o bien pasear por la Costanera, y deleitarse con un sabroso cebiche junto al mar. Alojamiento. Día 3º: Bus - Lima - Huaraz Salida en bus hacia los Andes, para llegar a la ciudad de Huaraz (3.100 m), capital del departamento de Ancash, la cual será el punto de partida para nuestras actividades en la Cordillera Blanca, dentro del Parque Nacional Huascarán. Llegada a la ciudad, y tiempo libre para aclimatarse y adaptarse a la altura, que se puede combatir con un buen mate de coca. Se puede dar un paseo por la Av. Luzuriaga, donde suele concentrarse el movimiento de esta ciudad. Para cenar se puede elegir entre los restaurantes que se encuentran en esta misma avenida o en alguna de sus perpendiculares. Alojamiento. Día 4º: Huaraz - Excursión a Llanganuco Recorreremos el valle llamado Callejón De Huaylas, entre las cordilleras Blanca y Negra y el serpentear del Río Santa. Ascenderemos hacia las Lagunas de Llanganuco, situadas en las bases de los glaciares Huascarán y Huandoy (6.768 m). Haremos una pequeña visita del entorno, antes de continuar a Caraz. Retorno a Huaraz. Día 5º: Huaraz - Excursión a Chavin de Huantar Esta jornada nos permitirá llegar detrás de la cordillera, al Callejón de Conchucos, donde se encuentra enclavado el Castillo de Chavin, importante centro de culto de esta cultura pre-inca, matriz de la civilización peruana. En el trayecto se puede apreciar la laguna Qeracocha y cruzaremos los Andes en el puerto y túnel de Cahuish, antes de ascender. La duración de esta excursión es de (10-11 h). Se suele partir a las 8 de la mañana a las zonas de cultivo del pueblo de Machac y llegar a Chavín de Huantar. Finalizado el recorrido, regreso a Huaraz. Día 6º: Bus Huaraz - Lima Bus de regreso a Lima. Llegada y resto del día libre para descansar y pasear. Alojamiento. Día 7º: Bus Lima - Pisco Tomaremos el bus por la Panamericana rumbo al sur hasta la Región de Pisco, conocida por su famoso aguardiente de uva, el “Pisco". Llegada a la Bahía de Paracas y alojamiento en Pisco. Día 8º: Excursión a las Islas Ballestas - Lima Salida hacia la península de Paracas para abordar las lanchas que navegan por esta reserva marina, una de las más importantes del Pacifico. Lobos marinos, Zarcillos, Piqueros, Cormoranes, pelícanos, pingüinos de Humboltd, etc. son parte de lo que veremos en esta parte del litoral. Regreso en autobús a Lima. Alojamiento. Día 9º: Lima Día libre en Lima. Se puede aprovechar para acudir, aproximadamente a las 11,30 al Palacio de Gobierno, para participar del Cambio de Guardia, todo un espectáculo, realizado al ritmo de los Huaynos (música popular andina) y Marineras (música popular de la costa), marcados por la Guardia presidencial con su popular “paso del ganso” (más exagerado que el “paso de la oca” inglés). Por la FICHA TÉCNICA noche merece la pena acudir a alguna de sus tradicionales “Peñas” o bares con espectáculos, para disfrutar del sabor criollo de esta antigua Lima, junto al mar. Alojamiento. Día 10º: Vuelo Lima - Arequipa Traslado al aeropuerto para tomar el vuelo que nos llevara a la ciudad de Arequipa, también conocida como "Ciudad Blanca", traslado a el hotel y resto del día libre. Podemos pasear por la ciudad, visitar su Plaza de Armas, Iglesia de la Compañía o el Convento de Santa Catalina, entre otros atractivos. Día 11º: Arequipa - Cañón del Colca Hoy saldremos muy temprano, hacia el cañón mas profundo del planeta (el primero tambien se encuentra en esta región). Pasaremos por el poblado y reserva de Pampa Cañahuas, donde con un poco de suerte podremos apreciar las famosas Vicuñas, camélido en peligro de extinción, antes, de llegar a Chivay, punto de partida y llegada para nuestras visitas en la zona. Es posible acercarse ( por vuestra cuenta ) a las termas de Calera. Noche en Chivay. La duración del viaje hasta Chivay es de unas 5 h aproximadamente. Día 12º: Cañón del Colca - Arequipa Hoy madrugaremos para dirigirnos hacia el lugar denominado " Cruz del Cóndor ", mirador desde donde se aprecia la profundidad del Cañón y el vuelo arrogante de los cóndores que ascienden a la superficie. Visitaremos los pueblos de Yanque y Maca, con iglesias coloniales, además de apreciar las inmensas y espectaculares terrazas de cultivo y tumbas colgantes. Viaje en autobús hasta la ciudad de Puno, en el altiplano andino, y a orillas del Lago Titicaca. Traslado y alojamiento en el hotel. Día 13º: Titicaca - Excursión a Uros - Noche en la comunidad de Taquile Navegaremos hacia las Islas Flotantes de los "Uros" y a continuación a la isla de Taquile. Visita de la isla y de la comunidad. En las islas de los Uros, notareis que los nativos viven en parte del turismo que los visita, además de dedicarse a la pesca, tejidos y otras labores, sin embargo de no ser por los visitantes o por la cercanía a Puno, ya hubiesen emigrado como lo ha hecho parte de esta comunidad, descendientes de la cultura Uros-Chipaya. Noche en la isla de Taquile (comunidad) El día ideal para realizar esta visita es, salir para Taquile un sábado, pernoctar ya que el domingo es el día en que se celebra misa en quechua en la isla y en un acontecimiento digno de ver. Día 14º: Taquile - Puno Regreso a Puno, donde llegaremos a ultima hora de la tarde. Traslado al hotel y alojamiento. Día 15º: Bus Puno - Cusco Traslado en autobús turístico hasta Cusco. El tiempo aproximado del viaje es de 8 horas, con 4 paradas que se realizan a lo largo del recorrido, que permiten visitar el pueblo de Pukara, de tradición artesanal donde también es posible apreciar importantes restos arqueológicos como el Templo de Kalasaya, La Raya, puerto más elevado durante el trayecto en el que se puede apreciar las termas de Aguas Calientes y el nacimiento del Río Vilcanota, Templo de Wiracocha en el pueblo de Rajchi, finalmente la ultima parada se realiza en El Templo San Pedro Apóstol de Andahuaylillas, conocida como la "Capilla Sixtina Sudamericana ". Esta opción permite ahorrar casi 4 horas de tren y beneficiarse de las visitas señaladas que casi convierten el viaje en una excursión más. NOTA: La Prefectura de Cusco ha prohibido el ingreso de autobuses al casco antiguo de Cusco, por lo que, si el hotel está ubicado en las cercanías de la Plaza Mayor, el autobús no llega hasta el mismo hotel, siendo necesario caminar un pequeño trecho. Día 16º: Cusco - Visita a la ciudad y ruinas * Visita de esta impresionante ciudad que fue la capital del Imperio de los Incas, y que es toda ella Patrimonio de la Humanidad, donde veremos, entre otros atractivos, la Iglesia de Santo Domingo, FICHA TÉCNICA que era el antiguo Coricancha (Templo del Sol) y la Fortaleza de Sacsayhuaman, a unos 2 Km del Cusco.

Together with the results of excavations in 2007, when another temple was found at the edge of the fortress, indicates there was longtime religious as well as military use of the facility, overturning previous conclusions about the site. Many believe that the city was planned as an effigy in the shape of a puma, a sacred animal. It is unknown how Cusco was specifically built, or how its large stones were quarried and transported to the site.

Embracing the towering Andean Mountains, the parched Atacama Desert, and the Amazon jungle fringes, the Inca Imperium was the largest empire of antiquity ever to arise south of the equator or in the Western Hemisphere. It synthesized unique adaptations to acute environmental conditions that had precedents in earlier societies and states of the Cordillera. Many of these adjustments continue to sustain the hemisphere’s largest Native American populations. Consequently, ethnographies and ethnohistories of indigenous people capture fascinating cultural institutions that shaped the archaeological past. The seminar will explore both the successes of Andean people and the failures of human development induced by natural disasters. CLASS STRUCTURE In addition to opening presentations, weekly classes will have student commentary and discussion of assigned readings. There will be oral assessments of how the readings articulate with seminar topics. Drawing upon the readings, each participant will bring to class a ~2 page short synopsis of questions and issues for discussion. The weekly briefs are important because they will guide the seminar’s considerations. They will be graded as will oral participation. Attendance is required. Dedication To those that came before us and left a legacy in stone that we are trying to comprehend. Although many archaeologists don’t like people outside of their field “digging into the past” so to speak when conventional explanations don’t satisfy, I feel it is essential. If the engineering feats of the Ancient Ones cannot or indeed are not answered satisfactorily, if the age of these stone works don’t include consultation from geologists, and if the oral traditions of those that are supposedly descendants of the master builders are not taken into account, then the full story is not present. One of the best examples of this regards the great Sphinx of Egypt, dated by most Egyptologists at about 4500 years. It took the insight and questioning mind of John Anthony West, veteran student of the history of that great land to invite a geologist to study the weathering patterns of the Sphinx and make an estimate of when and how such degradation took place. In stepped Dr. Robert Schoch, PhD at Boston University, who claimed, and still holds to the theory that such an effect was the result of rain, which could have only occurred prior to the time when the Pharaoh, the presumed builders, had existed. And it has taken the keen observations of an engineer, Christopher Dunn, to look at the Great Pyramid on the Giza Plateau and develop a very potent theory that it was indeed not the tomb of an egotistical Egyptian ruler, as in Khufu, but an electrical power plant that functioned on a grand scale thousands of years before Khufu (also known as Cheops) was born.

Your trip departs from London Heathrow where you’ll fly to Lima or Bogota (depending on flight arrangements) and onward to Cusco (Peru). The Amaru Hotel or similar (3/4 star) will be your base for the next few days while you acclimatise to Peru’s high altitude and prepare for the Inca trek ahead.
