WELCOME TO DAY 2: LIMA LIMA, PERU We will spend our day in the historic city A Volant representative will pick you up center of the "City of Kings." ITINERARY DAY 3: SACERD VALLEY OF THE INCAS - OLLANTAYTAMBO After our short flight to Cusco we will explore many different archeological sites in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Some of which are called Saqsaywaman, Rodadero, Humedal Wayllarqocha, Tambomachay and Pisac. We will also see spectacular views of the Urumbamba River. Tonight we will rest in Ollantaytambo, the only Inca settlement that has been inhabited since its inception. DAY 4: OLLANTAYTAMBO - AGUAS CALIENTES Waking up in the Sacred Valley we will spend our morning visiting the archeological sites of Ollantaytambo. We will witness the massive Incan Fortress that includes large stone terraces. Next, a 90 minute ride aboard the Vistadome train will take us to Aguas Calientes. Along the way peer outside for incredible views of the Sacred Valley. In the afternoon we will have time for an optional dip in the hot springs. Our evening will be spent in Aguas Calientes. ITINERARY DAY 5: MACHU PICCHU Today we will catch an early morning bus ride (20 minutes) to Machu Picchu. The early morning sun will magnify the beauty of the citadel. Our day in this "Lost City of the Incas" will be spiritually awakening as the history here is immeasurable. The majority of our day in this region will be spent hiking around the ruins. For those willing and able we will have the option to hike the Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu Mountain later in the day. In the evening we will return to Aguas Calientes. DAY 6: MORAY - MARAS - CHINCHEROS - CUSCO Our morning will consist of riding the Vistadome train ride back to Ollantaytambo. From there we will take a private car to Maras. The hour drive follows the Urumbaba River and passes even more ruins. Once in Maras we will visit the ruins of Moray. These Incan sites consist of concentric depressions measuring 30 m at their deepest. From Maras we will drive to the Chincheros District. Known to the Incas as the "Birthplace of the Rainbow," the old town of Chincheros is a small Andean Indian Village. Before our drive back into Cusco we will see a demonstration of cultural and historical agricultural practices. Be sure to soak up the our final views of the Sacred Valley. ITINERARY DAY 7: CUSCO In the heart of the former capital of the Incas we will tour the Plaza de Armas, Cusco Cathedral, Iglesia De La Santo Domingo and the Iglesia De La Compania De Jesus. We will also check out sites that date back to the 15th century including the Temple of the Sun and Qorikancha. As we explore this colonial city we will encounter local shopping markets as well as buildings that were once covered in gold. Much like in Lima the Plaza de Armas is considered the center square of Cusco. Here there are picturesque gardens as well as a central fountain to see. Colonial paintings inside the Cusco Cathedral are also a must. Our comfortable accommodations tonight will be in Cusco. Together, they constituted one of the most remarkable series of civilizations of the pre-industrial world. Secondary objectives involve: appreciation of (a) the potential and limitations of the singular Andean environment and how human inhabitants creatively coped with them, (b) economic and political dynamism in the ancient Andes (namely, the coast of Peru, the Cuzco highlands, and the Titicaca Basin), (c) the short and long-term impacts of the Spanish conquest and how they relate to modern-day western South America, and (d) factors and conditions that have affected the nature, priorities, and accomplishments of scientific Andean archaeology. The temporal coverage of the course span some 14,000 years of pre-Hispanic cultural developments, from the earliest hunter-gatherers to the Spanish conquest. The primary spatial coverage of the course roughly coincides with the western half (coast and highlands) of the modern nation of Peru – with special coverage and focus on the north coast of Peru.

Penny Harvey - University of Manchester The Historical Baroque in Contemporary Peru - Illusion and Enthrallment The main square of Cusco was unusually busy and more unusual still the huge doors of the Cathedral were open, people pouring out from what must have been an important mass. Taking advantage of a rare opportunity to visit this building outside of the normal restrictions imposed by the tourist trade, I ducked in through a side entrance just as the main doors were slammed shut again. It was years since I‟d been inside and I‟d forgotten the sheer scale and intricacy of the space. The Cathedral over-awes as intended. Throughout the Continent these huge, ambitious spaces were of central importance in marking Spanish presence, in imposing Catholicism, in erasing the presence and influence of previous Gods and divine rulers, and paradoxically in offering people some kind of solace. This Cathedral was no exception. To build it the Spanish had destroyed an Inka palace/ceremonial site which nevertheless provided the foundations for the new building. They also brought stone from the fortress of Sacsayhuaman subjugating the very fabric of the Inka imperial capital in its public conversion to Catholicism. Construction had begun in 1560 but was not completed until 1664. The building itself presents the non-coherence of architectural style that is characteristic of many of these mega projects that took over a century to be finalised. In this case the Renaissance facade constrasts with the interior, funished over a century later, by then exemplifying the colonial Baroque with its intricate gold and silver altars, carved stone work and the world famous collection of paintings of what became known as the Cusco school.

November 2016 ConservationVIP Volunteers on terraces overlooking the Urubamba River Executive Summary Conservation Volunteers International Program (ConservationVIP) organized and led a volunteer trip to the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu in November 2016, in collaboration with Peru’s Ministry of Culture, and the Ministry of Environment (National Service for Protected Area Management, SERNANP). The project was authorized by Doctor Vidal Pino Zambrano, Director de la Direccion Desconcentrada de Cultura Cusco - Ministry of Culture, and by engineer José Carlos Nieto Navarrete, Jefe of the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu for SERNANP. The projects were discussed with anthropologist José Fernando Astete Victoria, Jefe del Parque Arqueológico Nacional de Machupicchu. Twenty volunteers, including the two trip leaders, John Hollinrake and Dr. Bill Sapp, ConservationVIP Board Members, and el Licenciado Santiago Carrasco Bellota, performed 500 hours of volunteer work related to the following projects: Machu Picchu November 2016 Volunteer Trip Report Page 2 1. On Sunday, November 6, 2017, volunteers cleared Melinis minutiflora, known colloquially as pasto gordura, from 1.35 kilometers of Inca Trail between the Guard House and the Sun Gate, from 0.16 kilometers of the 50-steps portion of the Inca Trail between Wiñay Wayna and the Sun Gate, and from an approximately 1 meter buffer on either side of the trail. Total area cleared of approximately 5,205 square meters. One group of volunteers dug 35 holes for planting native trees along the trail. 2.
