In this study we estimated nest success in relation to several potential predictors of nest survival in the Stripe-tailed Yellow- finch (Sicalis citrina) breeding in abandoned mining pits at Brasília National Park. We monitored 73 nests during the 2007-breeding season. Predation was the main cause of nest failure (n = 48, 66%); while six nests were abandoned (8%) and 19 nests produced young (26%). Mayfield’s daily survival rates and nest success were 0.94 and 23%, respectively. Our results from nest survival models on program MARK indicated that daily survival rates increase linearly towards the end of the breeding season and decrease as nests aged. None of the nest individual covariates we tested - nest height, nest size, nest substrate, and edge effect - were important predictors of nest survival; however, nests placed on the most common plant tended to have higher survival probabilities. Also, there was no observer effect on daily survival rates. Our study suggests that abandoned mining pits may be suitable alternative breeding habitats for Striped-tailed Yellow-finches since nest survival rates were similar to other studies in the central cerrado region. Sucesso reprodutivo de Sicalis citrina em cascalheiras abandonadas, região central do Cerrado Resumo A adequação de habitats degradados para reprodução de aves pode ser testada por meio de avaliação das taxas de predação de ninhos. Neste estudo nós estimamos o sucesso de nidificação do canário-rasteiro (Sicalis citrina) e o relacionamos, por meio de modelagem no programa MARK, com diversos fatores que potencialmente afetam a sobrevivência dos ninhos da espécie em antigas áreas de extração de solo (cascalheiras), no Parque Nacional de Brasília, Distrito Federal. Nós monitoramos 73 ninhos da espécie durante a estação reprodutiva de 2007. Predação foi a principal causa da perda de ninhos (n = 48, 66%), enquanto seis foram abandonados (8%) e 19 produziram ao menos um filhote (26%). A taxa diária de sobrevivência e o sucesso total de Mayfield foram 0,94 and 23%, respectivamente. Nossos resultados, obtidos da modelagem de sobrevivência, indicaram que as taxas de sobrevivência diária dos ninhos aumenta linearmente à medida que avança a estação reprodutiva, ao passo que diminui conforme a idade do ninho aumenta. Nenhum dos fatores que testamos – altura do ninhos, tamanho dos ninhos, planta suporte e distância até a borda dos ambientes de cascalheira – mostraram-se importantes como fatores determinantes do sucesso dos ninhos. Nossos resultados sugerem que as antigas áreas de cascalheira podem ser adequadas para a reprodução do canário-rasteiro, uma vez que as taxas de sobrevivência que encontramos neste estudo são similares às encontradas em estudos com outras espécies na região central do Cerrado. Lowther, Field Museum Brood parasitism is an awkward term to describe an interaction between two species in which, as in predator-prey relationships, one species gains at the expense of the other. Brood parasites "prey" upon parental care. Victimized species usually have reduced breeding success, partly because of the additional cost of caring for alien eggs and young, and partly because of the behavior of brood parasites (both adults and young) which may directly and adversely affect the survival of the victim's own eggs or young. About 1% of all bird species, among 7 families, are brood parasites. The 5 species of brood parasitic “cowbirds” are currently all treated as members of the genus Molothrus. Host selection is an active process. Not all species co-occurring with brood parasites are equally likely to be selected nor are they of equal quality as hosts. Rather, to varying degrees, brood parasites are specialized for certain categories of hosts. Brood parasites may rely on a single host species to rear their young or may distribute their eggs among many species, seemingly without regard to any characteristics of potential hosts. Lists of species are not the best means to describe interactions between a brood parasitic species and its hosts. Such lists do not necessarily reflect the taxonomy used by the brood parasites themselves nor do they accurately reflect the complex interactions within bird communities (see Ortega 1998: 183-184). Host lists do, however, offer some insight into the process of host selection and do emphasize the wide variety of features than can impact on host selection.

    The enigmatic Diademed Sandpiper-Plover in a remote valley was the bird of the trip (Mark Pearman) NORTHERN ARGENTINA 21 OCTOBER – 12 NOVEMBER 2016 TOUR REPORT LEADER: MARK PEARMAN Northern Argentina 2016 was another hugely successful chapter in a long line of Birdquest tours to this region with some 524 species seen although, importantly, more speciality diamond birds were seen than on all previous tours. Highlights in the north-west included Huayco Tinamou, Puna Tinamou, Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, Black-and-chestnut Eagle, Red-faced Guan, Black-legged Seriema, Wedge-tailed Hilstar, Slender-tailed Woodstar, Black-banded Owl, Lyre-tailed Nightjar, Black-bodied Woodpecker, White-throated Antpitta, Zimmer’s Tapaculo, Scribble-tailed Canastero, Rufous-throated Dipper, Red-backed Sierra Finch, Tucuman Mountain Finch, Short-tailed Finch, Rufous-bellied Mountain Tanager and a clean sweep on all the available endemcs. The north-east produced such highly sought-after species as Black-fronted Piping- Guan, Long-trained Nightjar, Vinaceous-breasted Amazon, Spotted Bamboowren, Canebrake Groundcreeper, Black-and-white Monjita, Strange-tailed Tyrant, Ochre-breasted Pipit, Chestnut, Rufous-rumped, Marsh and Ibera Seedeaters and Yellow Cardinal. Common Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae): one found free- roaming near Fruitville Road and Interstate 75 in the Deer Hollow area of Sarasota, Sarasota County, 23 October 2013, was featured in an article in a local newspaper (Anonymous 2013; BPA 6110–d, photographer uncredited). The emu was captured and taken into captivity by Sarasota County Animal Services; we do not know its final disposition. There is one previous report of the species in Florida but no previous record (Greenlaw et al. 2014). Common Emu is endemic to Australia. Magpie Goose (Anseranas semipalmata): two unbanded adults in the Edgewater area, Volusia County, in July-August 2014 (BPA 8542a–c, M. Brothers, 15 July 2014; BPA 8543, B.     The YUCATÁN, the LACANDÓN, and COZUMEL 18 Jan–1 Feb 2013 Leader: Michael Retter Photos by Michael Retter There were a couple alterations to the tour this year, and for the better, I think. Cozumel was included as part of the main tour rather than just an extension, and we took a boat ride up into the pristine Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve. As a result, we had good looks at all of the endemic species and most of the endemic subspecies on Cozumel, and enjoyed thrilling ride up the rushing crystal waters of the Río Tzendales. Along the way, we saw some great birds, such as Scaled Pigeon and King Vulture. While birding the Río Usumacinta marshes on the last day, we had the good fortune to be invited by a kindly farmer to drive around on the levees throughout thousands of acres of rice fields, which afforded us some stellar views of immense numbers of birds. We tallied hundreds of herons, egrets, and Fork-tailed Flycatchers, and clouds of thousands of Grassland Yellow-finches. Introduction Wildlife trafficking, including the flora, fauna and their products and byproducts, is considered the third largest illegal activity in the world, after weapons and drugs trafficking. Considering only the wild animals trafficking in Brazil, it is estimated that about 38 million specimens are captured from nature annually and approximately four million of those are sold. Based on the data of animals seized and their prices, it is suggested that this Country deals with about two billion and five hundred million dollars a year [1]. The wildlife trafficking networks, like any other criminal network, have great flexibility and adaptability and join with other categories or activities (legal or illegal), such as drugs, weapons, alcohol, and precious stones. Their products are often sent from the same regions and have similar practices such as forgery, bribery of officials, tax evasion, fraudulent customs declarations, among many others [1]. In some cases, the criminals are infiltrated in public agencies to entice public officials and, in case of problems in the target Country, they can move with ease to other destination. Moreover, people involved can be easily replaced by others more efficient, reliable and qualified for the activity. This great power of mobility and changeability is one of the major problems to map the criminal networks and their local of action [2].

It sits atop 900-foot Semaphore Hill overlooking Soberania National Park. While its rooms are rather spartan, the food is Panama’s Canopy Tower © Ruthie Stearns excellent and the opportunity to view birds at dawn from the 360º rooftop Observation Deck above the treetops is outstanding. Twenty minutes away is the start of the famous Pipeline Road, possibly one of the best birding roads in Central and South America. From our base, daily birding outings are made to various locations in Central Panama, which vary from the primary forest around the tower, to huge mudflats near Panama City and, finally, to cool Cerro Azul and Cerro Jefe forest. An enticing example of what awaits visitors to this marvelous birding paradise can be found in excerpts taken from the Journal I write during every tour and later e- mail to participants. These are taken from my 17-page, January 2019 Journal. On our first day at Canopy Tower, with 5 of the 8 participants having arrived, we were touring the Observation Deck on top of Canopy Tower when Ruthie looked up and called my attention to a bird flying in our direction...it was a Black Hawk-Eagle! I called down to others on the floor below and we watched it disappear into the distant clouds.

Morphol., 29(2):537- 542, 2011. SUMMARY: Circovirus are viral agents that cause disease in avian species. The main clinical symptoms of the disease are immunosuppression and, in young birds feather disorders. In neonates, the disease is known as "black spot" and characterized by abdo- minal enlargement, hepatobiliar congestion and failure to thrive. Also, it was observed in adult infected birds with other symptoms and clinical signs, such as enteritis, sinusitis, rhinitis, tracheitis, bronchopneumonia, myocarditis, nephritis, splenitis, dyspnea, anorexia, depression leading to high mortality. In April 2008, 317 saffron finch were apprehended during an illegal commercialization and were forwarded to the Wild Animals Recovery Center of the Tiete Ecological Park. Subsequently, 101 (31.66%) died and 20 of these were selected and sent to the Laboratory of Electron Microscopy, Biological Institute of São Paulo, Brazil to investigate possible etiological agents. After necropsy of these animals fragments of lung, liver and small intestine were processed using negative staining and resin embedding techniques.

It sits atop 900-foot Semaphore Hill overlooking Soberania National Park. While its rooms are rather spartan, the food is excellent and the opportunity Panama’s Canopy Tower © Ruthie Stearns to view birds at dawn from the 360º rooftop Observation Deck above the treetops is outstanding. Twenty minutes away is the start of the famous Pipeline Road, possibly one of the best birding roads in Central and South America. From our base, daily birding outings are made to various locations in Central Panama, which vary from the primary forest around the tower, to huge mudflats near Panama City and, finally, to cool Cerro Azul and Cerro Jefe forest. An enticing example of what awaits visitors to this marvelous birding paradise can be found in excerpts taken from the Journal I write every night during the tour and later e-mail to participants.
