Etudes Sur L'histoire Administrative De L'empire Byzantin. I. Strat&ge, monostrat&ge, stratfege-autokrator. Ainsi, Belisaire est qualifie de monostratege de tout TOrient, μονοστράτηγος πάαης ( όλης ) ανατολής2. Sous Michel III (842-867), le fils cadet de Bardas etait monostratege d’Occident, μονοστράτηγος των δυτικών3 * ou5 μονοστράτηγος εις τά δυτικά {λύματα*. B, 16, 9. ABSTRACT: This paper is focussed on the analyses about the reference by the byzantine author John Malalas (VIth century) of a military troop called the spaniards, garrisoned in Crimea dur- ing the late twenties of the sixth century. We try to elucidate the relationship of these spaniards with the Iberian Peninsula during this century and also with the military troops with toponimical links with Hispania mentioned in the Notitia Dignitatum Orientalis.

  • Curs De Bizantinologie – Prof. Univ. Dr. Emilian Popescu
Curs de Bizantinologie – Prof. Univ. Dr. Emilian Popescu CURS DE BIZANŢ I Prof. Univ.

  • BYZANTINE ROYAL ANCESTRY Emperors, 578-1453
GRANHOLM GENEALOGY BYZANTINE ROYAL ANCESTRY Emperors, 578-1453 1 INTRODUCTION During the first half of the first century Byzantium and specifically Constantinople was the most influentional and riches capital in the world. Great buildings, such as Hagia Sophia were built during these times. Despite the distances, contacts with the Scandinavians took place, in some cases cooperation against common enemies. Vikings traded with them and served in the Emperors’ Court. Sweden’s King Karl XII took refuge there for four years after the defeat in the war against Peter the Great of Russia in Poltava. Our 6th great grandfather, “ Cornelius von Loos” was with him and made drawings of many of the famous buildings in that region. The Byzantine lineages to us are shown starting fr o m different ancestors. There are many royals to whom we have a direct ancestral relationship and others who are distant cousins. These give an interesting picture of the history from those times. Wars took place among others with the Persians, which are also described in the book about our Persian Royal Ancestry. Additional text for many persons is highlighted in the following lists. This story begins with Emperor Tiberius II, (47th great grandfather) born in 520 and ends with the death of Emperor Constantine XI (15th cousin, 17 times removed) in battle in 1453. His death marked the final end of the Roman Empire, which had continued in the East for just under one thousand years after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. No relations to us, the initial Emperor of the Byzantine was Justin I , born a peasant and a swineherd by initial occupation, reigned 518 to 527.

B. BURY, M.A. FBLLOW AND TUTOR OF TRINITY COr.i.BGE, DUBLIN VOL. I lLontJon MACMILLAN AND CO. AND NEW YORK i889 vs~, 11~ Bq, r /63£ PREFACE THERE is no period of history which has been so much obscured by incorrect and misleading titles as the period of the later Roman Empire. It is, I believe, more due to improper names than one might at first be disposed to admit, that the import of that period is so constantly misunderstood and its character so often misrepresented. For the first step towards grasping the history of those centuries through which the ancient evolved into the modern world is the comprehension of the fact that the old Roman Empire did not cease to exist until the year 1453. The line of Roman Emperors continued in unbroken succession from Octavius Augustus to Constantine Palaeo- logus. • Now this essential fact is obscured as far IlS language is able to obscure it by applying the name "Byzantine" or the name "Greek" to the Empire in its later stages. Historians who use the phrase "Byzantine Empire" are not very con sistent or very precise as to the date at which the "Roman Empire" ends and the " Byzantine Empire" begins. Sometimes the line is drawn at the foundation of Constantinople by Con stantine the Great, sometimes at the death of Theodosius the Great, sometimes at the reign of Justinian, sometimes (as by Finlay) at the accession of Leo the Isaurian; and the historian who adopts one line of division cannot assert that the historian who adopts a different line is wrong.

• JUSTINIAN CEL MARE Și APORTUL SĂU PENTRU APĂRAREA DREPTEI CREDINȚE
JUSTINIAN CEL MARE șI APORTUL SĂU PENTRU APĂRAREA DREPTEI CREDINȚE Preot drd. Emanuel Gafița JUSTINIAN THE GREAT AND HIS INPUT IN DEFENDING TRUE FAITH Abstract: Justinian the Great (Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Justinianus) became famous for his enviable ambition and his perseverance in praising himself, as well as for the self-proclaimed title of emperor of the Romans. Upon declaring the autokrator ἰσαπόστολος, meaning “the equal of apostles”, he ranked it above the people, the state and even above the church, also legalizing the inaccessibility of the monarch to worldly judgment, as well as to the holy one. A Christian emperor could not, obviously, have divided himself, which is why isapostolos turned out to be quite an opportunistic category, the highest rank accessible to man.
