    This page intentionally left blank Murder in Aubagne Lynching, Law, and Justice during the French Revolution This is a study of factions, lynching, murder, terror, and counterterror during the French Revolution. It examines factionalism in small towns like Aubagne near Marseille, and how this produced the murders and prison massacres of 1795–1798. Another major theme is the conver- gence of lynching from below with official terror from above. Although the Terror may have been designed to solve a national emergency in the spring of 1793, in southern France it permitted one faction to con- tinue a struggle against its enemies, a struggle that had begun earlier over local issues like taxation and governance. This study uses the tech- niques of microhistory to tell the story of the small town of Aubagne. It then extends the scope to places nearby like Marseille, Arles, and Aix-en-Provence. Along the way, it illuminates familiar topics like the activity of clubs and revolutionary tribunals and then explores largely unexamined areas like lynching, the sociology of factions, the emer- gence of theories of violent fraternal democracy, and the nature of the White Terror. D. M. G. Sutherland received his M.A. from the University of Sussex and his Ph.D. from the University of London. He is currently professor of history at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is the author of The Chouans: The Social Origins of Popular Counterrevolution in Upper Brittany, 1770–1796 (1982), France, 1789–1815: Revolution and Counterrevolution (1985), and The French Revolution, 1770– 1815: The Quest for a Civic Order (2003) as well as numerous scholarly articles.

The different stylistic iterations of the post Second World War novel offered by these writers, from Khatibi’s experimental autobiography to Izzo’s noir fiction, provide the basis of an analysis of the connections between literary representation and the changing urban environments of Casablanca, Montreal, and Marseille. Relying on planning documents, historical analyses, and urban theory, as well as architectural, political, and literary discourse, to understand the fabric of the cities that surround novels’ representations, the dissertation argues that the perceptual descriptions that enrich these narratives of urban life help to characterize new ways of seeing and knowing the complex spaces of each of the cities.

Brooks ii ABSTRACT During the era of New Imperialism, the French state had the daunting task of convincing the French public of the need to support and to sustain an overseas empire. Stemming from its defeat in the Franco-Prussian War and hoping to regain its erstwhile global position, the French state set out to demonstrate the importance of maintaining an empire. Since the vast majority of the French people were apathetic towards colonial ventures, the French state used the 1889 Parisian Universal Exposition and the 1906 and 1922 Colonial Expositions in Marseille not only to educate the French about the economic benefits of the empire, but to entertain them simultaneously so that they unwittingly began to accept the notion of an interconnected Greater France. Each of these expositions contained a group of colonial exhibits in which indigenous colonial subjects, whom the expositions’ organizers handpicked to come to France, displayed their daily routines and interacted with the visiting public. Visitors witnessed the lifestyles of indigenous cultures and took away from the exhibits a greater understanding of those who lived in the colonies. However, the vast majority of the French public who visited the expositions did not experience a shift in their mindset favoring the continuance of a colonial empire until after World War One.

Prof. Mauro Mariotti per una giornata dedicata a Clarence Bicknell ed i suoi rapporti con Thomas Hanbury e il mondo botanico di fine XIX secolo. 26 gennaio 2019, Giardini Botanici Hanbury, Ventimiglia, La botanica, che Linneo definì Scientia amabilis perché studia alberi e fiori, opere tra le più belle del Creato, è disciplina che si è sviluppata sia nelle sedi accademiche sia sul campo, attraverso l’attività di scienziati professionisti, più o meno illustri, e di fedeli appassionati che potremmo considerare dilettanti, non in senso spregiativo, bensì con riferimento a chi coltiva tale disciplina per puro diletto. La consistente e qualificata attività degli appassionati della botanica ha apportato contributi significativi alle conoscenze botaniche, in particolare per quanto riguarda la distribuzione e l’ecologia delle piante. In tempi recenti è stato coniato il termine citizen science per indicare quel complesso di attività collegate a una ricerca scientifica a cui partecipano semplici cittadini o, meglio, “attività scientifica in cui scienziati non professionisti volontariamente partecipano alla raccolta e analisi di dati, allo sviluppo di tecnologie, alla valutazione di fenomeni naturali, alla disseminazione delle stesse attività”. Il monitoraggio e le osservazioni ambientali, in particolare quelle riguardanti la flora e la fauna, sono esempi di tali attività che, in diversi casi, costituiscono il cuore di progetti coordinati da istituzioni quali i musei, le università o le agenzie territoriali. Oggi le attività svolte dai citizen scientist si avvalgono di applicazioni sviluppate per i dispositivi mobili e le informazioni acquisite vengono comunicate tramite portali web; ovviamente, in passato non esistevano simili strumenti, ma gli appassionati della botanica partecipavano, talora con ruoli essenziali, a reti capillari di osservazione, raccolta e scambio di informazioni.
