Jackson Park, designed by famous landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, holds beauty and surprises for visitors of all ages. Almost all of Jackson Park was used for the construction of the great buildings of the 1893 Columbian Exposition, but Wooded Island was developed as a place of rest and quiet. Today, 1.26- mile long nature trail on Wooded Island and Bobolink Meadow allows visitors see birds, trees, flowers, and wildlife in a peaceful setting never far from the hustle and bustle of the great city.

Rudolf Hecht, Middlegate Japanese Garden (courtesy of Harry Stegenga, grandson of John Dambrink, Pass Christian, MS) REMEMBERING A GARDEN nce there were the most enchanting gardens in Pass Christian on the OMississippi Gulf Coast about 70-miles east of New Orleans, Louisiana. Middlegate Japanese Gardens were almost a secret, not visible to the street, and many residents were not even aware of the gardens’ existence. Rudolf Hecht, wealthy New Orleans entrepreneur, and his wife, Lynne Watkins Hecht, created the gardens at their beach “cottage” to preserve fond memories of their travels in Japan.1 My interest in the story of Middlegate Japanese Gardens has been life long. At the age of 12, I first passed through the bamboo gate at the St. Louis Street entrance and walked under the blue tile roof leading into the garden. Like Alice stepping through the looking glass, I passed from the small Gulf Coast town of Pass Christian in the 1950s into a Japanese dreamscape unlike anything I had ever imagined. With the property facing the beach road of Pass Christian (US Highway 90), I could still hear automobile traffic and smell the sea breeze. Though seagulls called above, all that was familiar in my world melted away. I had not traveled. The center of my universe was the Mississippi Gulf Coast and my journeys were limited to the Louisiana and Mississippi waters of the Gulf of Mexico. My tour of Middlegate, though but a few miles from my home, was my first visit to a foreign place.

    Hazard Mitigation Plan Community Profile Community Profile: Introduction Jurisdiction Community Profiles Each participating jurisdiction was asked to write or update a profile that includes information like the history of their jurisdiction, demographics, future development plans and significant historic disasters. Those profiles were integrated by the Office or Emergency Management and transferred into proper format. Because of the various types and sized of jurisdictions (school districts, fire districts, and municipalities), the profiles may not include the same information. For example, smaller fire districts that are ran by volunteers may not have expansion or development plans at this time compared to larger districts with paid fire-fighters. Nevertheless, the profiles provide a basic understanding from staffing figures to a brief history of each jurisdiction. Additionally, it should be noted that a great deal of historical and demographic data is derived from Census reports. Evangel and Drury University Evangel University and Drury University are private Universities and therefore do not qualify as participants of the 2015 Mitigation Plan. Capturing their demographics was included to more accurately represent the student populations present in Greene County.     A “Lost” Technique, Found HOW THE HUNTINGTON’S MOON BRIDGE SPANS THE CENTURIES By Lisa Blackburn t’s not unusual to see graduate students at The Song dynasty scroll by artist Zhang Zeduan depicts Huntington; on any given day there are likely a bustling river scene outside the gates of Bianjing to be dozens of them hard at work conducting (now known as Kaifeng), the capital city at that research among the collections. But it’s not time.     EEN GIDS DOOR HET ‘AUTHENTIEKE’ NEDERLAND HET GEBRUIK VAN HET BEGRIP ‘AUTHENTICITEIT’ IN NEDERLANDS- EN ENGELSTALIGE REISGIDSEN Anouk Pouwels S4484800 Masterscriptie ‘Tourism and Culture’ Radboud Universiteit Begeleider: Dr. Floris Meens 15 juni 2018 1 SAMENVATTING De authenticiteitsindustrie draait overuren, omdat in deze technologisch gemedieerde en gecommercialiseerde wereld steeds meer toeristen verlangen naar ‘authentieke’ en ‘echte’ ervaringen. Reisgidsen spelen een actieve rol in het sturen van toeristen bij het bevredigen van dit verlangen. Zo is het taalgebruik van de auteurs bepalend voor de manier waarop toeristen de desbetreffende locaties ervaren. Dit talige aspect van het begrip ‘authenticiteit’ blijkt echter onderbelicht te zijn de wetenschappelijke discussies. Dit onderzoek is dan ook uitgevoerd met het doel om meer kennis te verwerven wat betreft de manier waarop toeristen worden gestuurd door het taalgebruik in reisgidsen bij het bevredigen van hun verlangen naar ‘authenticiteit’. Hiervoor is de volgende onderzoeksvraag opgesteld: Hoe worden ‘authenticiteit’ en aanverwante begrippen gebruikt om locaties, objecten, producten, gedragingen, ondervindingen en individuen in Nederland te beschrijven in Nederlands- en Engelstalige reisgidsen gepubliceerd tussen het jaar 2002 en 2018? Om een antwoord te kunnen geven op deze onderzoeksvraag is een kwantitatieve en kwalitatieve discourseanalyse uitgevoerd. Hoewel ‘authenticiteit’ een belangrijk fenomeen is in de toeristenbranche en als zodanig wordt omschreven in de historiografie, blijkt uit het onderzoek dat de auteurs het begrip erg spaarzaam aangewend hebben, omdat het beschouwd wordt als een besmette term. Gezien het feit de aanverwante begrippen, daarentegen, met regelmaat worden toegepast, kan worden gesteld dat dit beladen begrip door de auteurs wordt omzeild door middel van het gebruik van verwante adjectieven.
