Chapter 5 Transportation Planning Base Studies Village of Rye Brook, New York CHAPTER 5 TRANSPORTATION This chapter provides background on transportation elements af- fecting residents, commuters and businesses in the Village of Rye Brook. These elements include the road system, public transporta- tion, and Westchester County Airport (HPN). The moving of people and goods is essential for any community. Community transporta- tion assets, traffic conditions and census data are presented here to allow the full transportation picture for the Village of Rye Brook. 5.1 Road System The road system in the Village of Rye Brook includes limited ac- cess roadways, major arterial roadways, collector roads and local streets. There are approximately 30 miles of roadways in the Vil- lage. Each roadway is designed to serve a different function to move people and goods in an efficient manner. Map 5-1 Road Net- work on page 5-2 shows the four categories of roadways. A. Limited Access Roadways Limited access roadways consist of routes that do not have many access points except at major roadway intersections, or in the case of interstates or parkways, only have access through controlled in- Figure 5-1. Interstate 287 - is an east-west Federal interstate route that runs through the central part of Westchester County. Interstate 287 (I- 287) connects to the Tappan Zee Bridge in Tarrytown and Interstate 95 (I-95) in Port Chester. -
Viva Barcelona!
Viva Barcelona! A group of Longhill students of Spanish were lucky enough to visit the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona during their recent trip to Spain. Students were based in the sun-drenched resort of Salou, in the province of Tarragona, for their stay over the Easter holidays. For many students, it was their first time abroad and also their first time on a plane – an exciting start to the trip and a relief to touch down safely at Barcelona airport. From there, it was a two hour coach trip to the hotel in the resort of Salou. Student Kaia told us, “It was a nice hotel. People - guests and staff - were really friendly and I shared a room with two other girls. It was a great opportunity to get to know people better – school friends, other students and Spanish people. People were open and friendly and seemed to be more accepting than people back home. There were some Spanish, French and Irish students staying in the hotel and they were all really nice and friendly too.” The students were impressed by how different the Spanish architecture was. “The architecture was amazing – very interesting.” Kaia told us, “The way the buildings were structured and even the flooring designs had meaning, in fact even tiny designs had meaning. We went to the Gaudi Museum and saw some of his amazing design work. It was so interesting to see how Spain is structured differently to home.” She added, “We didn’t go into any of the Gaudi buildings, but it was great to take pictures from outside and the colours everywhere were so vibrant. -

Musconetcong National Wild and Scenic River Management Plan EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This management plan proposes a strategy for managing the Musconetcong River and its many outstanding resource values. It was prepared as part of a study to evaluate the Musconetcong River for inclusion in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The Musconetcong River drains a 157.6 square mile watershed area in northern New Jersey, and as a major tributary to the Delaware River, is part of the 12,755 square mile Delaware River watershed. The Musconetcong River is a boundary water for its entire length, first dividing Morris and Sussex counties, then Hunterdon and Warren counties. All or portions of 26 municipalities lie within the natural boundaries of the Musconetcong watershed. Fourteen municipalities fall within the river segments eligible for National Wild and Scenic Rivers designation. The impetus for the Musconetcong National Wild and Scenic Rivers study can be traced back to 1991, when petitions were circulated calling for the protection of the Musconetcong River under both the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System and New Jersey Wild and Scenic Rivers program. In 1992, Congress passed legislation authorizing the National Park Service to study the eligibility and potential suitability of the Lower Delaware River for addition to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. -

Saturday’s morning talk, and this newsletter, are the last of the 2018-19 session before we gear up to start again in September. The success of any U3A year, and the ‘gearing up’ process before the next one begins – the membership renewals process involves a great deal of work on the part of a team of office volunteers, and our Membership Secretary in particular – depend entirely on the willingness and commitment of the different teams of volunteers who make it all possible. So, it is appropriate for my open remark to be a heartfelt ‘Thank you’ to all those of you who volunteer in any capacity and thereby keep our branch running. -

TRANSPORTATION TRIPS, EXCURSIONS, SPECIAL JOURNEYS, OUTINGS, TOURS, AND MILESTONES IN, TO, FROM OR THROUGH NEW JERSEY Bill McKelvey, Editor, Updated to Mon., Mar. 8, 2021 INTRODUCTION This is a reference work which we hope will be useful to historians and researchers. For those researchers wanting to do a deeper dive into the history of a particular event or series of events, copious resources are given for most of the fantrips, excursions, special moves, etc. in this compilation. You may find it much easier to search for the RR, event, city, etc. you are interested in than to read the entire document. We also think it will provide interesting, educational, and sometimes entertaining reading. Perhaps it will give ideas to future fantrip or excursion leaders for trips which may still be possible. In any such work like this there is always the question of what to include or exclude or where to draw the line. Our first thought was to limit this work to railfan excursions, but that soon got broadened to include rail specials for the general public and officials, special moves, trolley trips, bus outings, waterway and canal journeys, etc. The focus has been on such trips which operated within NJ; from NJ; into NJ from other states; or, passed through NJ. We have excluded regularly scheduled tourist type rides, automobile journeys, air trips, amusement park rides, etc. NOTE: Since many of the following items were taken from promotional literature we can not guarantee that each and every trip was actually operated. Early on the railways explored and promoted special journeys for the public as a way to improve their bottom line. -
