MEEKS MARTIAL ARTS SOLID RANK REQUIREMENTS This is a general guide containing the requirements for promotion at Meeks Martial Arts for Solid Rank students. Eligibility for promotion is based on several factors, some of which are listed below: ● Character (showing courtesy, self control, integrity, perseverance, and indomitable spirit in and out of the classroom) ● The Pursuit and Attainment of Skill and Knowledge in the martial arts ● Class Time (CT) Note: Students must accomplish the requirements for the rank they currently hold in order to progress. For example, Orange belts should study the Orange belt requirements and below to progress to Green belt. WHITE (9th Gup) ○ CT - 15 classes Tenets of Taekwondo: ○ Courtesy - Be kind and helpful to others. ○ Integrity - Do what’s honorable, even when no one is watching you. ○ Self-Control - Control your own actions and take responsibility for what you do. ○ Perseverance - Don’t give up or quit just because something is difficult. ○ Indomitable Spirit - Overcome your fears and stand up for what’s right. Techniques/Knowledge: ○ At Ease (feet shoulder width apart, hands behind back, back of left hand on lower back, back of right hand in left palm, thumbs crossed) ○ Fighting stance (hands up, elbows down, knees bent, body turned sideways). ○ Walking stance (1 shoulder width wide, 1 should width long, hands up, stand as if taking a step forward). ○ Front stance (aka forward, 1 shoulder width wide, 2 shoulder widths long, front knee bent to 45 degrees, back leg straight). ○ Middle stance (aka horse stance, 2 shoulder widths wide, feet parallel, and knees bent). ○ Jab punch (punch with front hand, close fingers, thumb on outside, make contact with index and middle finger knuckles, keep back hand up for defense). ○ Reverse punch (aka cross, punch with back hand, pivot on back foot, rotate body for more power, keep front hand up for defense). ○ Front Snap kick (kick with snapping motion, chamber leg, pivot base foot, extend kick, strike with ball or whole bottom of foot, rechamber leg). ○ Front Push kick (kick with pushing motion). ○ Low block (chamber arm, block with forearm downwards to defend upper leg). ○ Middle block (inside and outside block, chamber arm, block with forearm to middle to defend torso) . ○ High block (chamber arm, block with forearm upwards to defend head). ○ Ability to tie your own belt (not more than 1 inch difference in lengths of tips). ○ Know the difference between right and left stances (determined by which foot is in front). ○ Know the difference between front leg and rear leg while in a stance. ○ Understand basic body mechanics of the punch and kick (i.e. rotation of the body to generate power for punches and pivoting of the foot and chambering the leg for kicks). Terms: ○ Tae Kwon Do “Tae- to kick, Kwon- to punch, Do- the way” or “The way of kicking and punching” ○ Line up - “Chulsa” ○ Attention - “Charyeot” ○ Bow - “Kyong Yeh” Self Defense: ○ Escape inside wrist grab, Counter with Reverse Punch ○ Escape outside wrist grab, Counter with Reverse Punch ○ Escape double wrist grab from front, Counter with Front Snap Kick ○ Escape twin wrist grab from rear, Counter with Front Push Kick Fitness: ○ 4 Board Breaks (each technique must be different or same, but executed with different arm or leg) ○ 10 push-ups (may perform modified pushups, must do 50% more) ○ 10 sit-ups (may perform crunches, must do 100% more) YELLOW (8th Gup) Student may begin sparring. Will need Hand and Foot gear. ○ CT - 30 classes (15 to midterm) Form 1 ○ Il Jang Techniques/Knowledge: ○ Roundhouse kick (understand proper execution of kick with top or ball of foot, proper pivot, proper chamber) ○ “Power” Roundhouse kick (understand proper follow through of kick) ○ Vertical Hammer Fist (strike with bottom of fist, moves downwards) ○ Horizontal Hammer Fist (moves horizontally) ○ Inverted Hammer Fist (hand is turned upside down) ○ Double Outer Forearm Block Terms: ○ “Jumbee” means “Ready” ○ “Barro” means “Return to ready ○ “Show” means “Rest” ○ “She Jak” means “Start” ○ “Go Mon” means “Stop” Self Defense: ○ Defend against Punch, Counter with Reverse Punch (wear sparring gear) ○ Defend against Front kick, Counter with Front Kick (wear sparring gear) Fitness/Strength: ○ Board Breaks (4) ○ 15 push-ups (may perform modified pushups, must do 50% more) ○ 15 sit-ups (may perform crunches, must do 100% more) ORANGE (7th Gup) Student may use Head gear. ○ CT - 30 classes (15 to midterm) Form 2 ○ Ee Jang Techniques/Knowledge: ○ High Punch (punch to face) ○ Middle Punch (punch to torso) ○ Low Punch (punch to groin or ground) ○ Backfist ○ Uppercut ○ Elbow Strike (Back elbow and Elbow smash) ○ Knee Strike ○ Side Kick ○ Jump Front Kick Terms: ○ “Dee” means “Belt” ○ “Dobak” means “Uniform” ○ “Dojang” means “Training Hall” (think of it as the actual room we train in) ○ “Kwan” means “School” (think of it as the school itself or an organization that you belong to) Self Defense/Sparring: ○ Escape Shoulder Grab with Arm Trap, Uppercut, Elbow Strike, Knee Strike, and Side Kick ○ 1-on-1 sparring Fitness: ○ Board Breaks (4) ○ 20 push-ups ○ 20 sit-ups GREEN (6th Gup) ○ CT - 30 classes (15 to midterm) Form 3 ○ Sam Jang Techniques/Knowledge: ○ Double Punch (Jab then Reverse) ○ Vertical Knife hand strike ○ Horizontal Knife hand strike ○ Inverted Knife hand strike ○ Single Knife hand block (High, Middle, Low) ○ Step thru Side Kick Terms: ○ Instructor - “Sa Bum Nim” ○ Lead Student - “Soon Bay Nim” ○ Student - “Jeja” Self Defense/Sparring: ○ Defend against Single Hand Front Choke ○ Defend against Double Hand Front Choke ○ 1-on-1 sparring Fitness: ○ Board Breaks (6) ○ 25 push-ups ○ 25 sit-ups PURPLE (5th Gup) CT - 30 classes (15 to midterm) Form 4 ○ Sa Jang Techniques/Knowledge: ○ Double Knife Hand Block ○ Spear Hand (vertical and horizontal) ○ Reverse Side Kick ○ Skipping Side Kick ○ Inner Crescent Kick ○ Outer Crescent Kick Terms: ○ Count 1-5 “Hana, Dool, Set, Net, Da Sut” Self Defense/Sparring: ○ Defend Rear Collar Grab ○ 1-on-1 Sparring Fitness: ○ Board Breaks (6) ○ 30 push-ups ○ 30 sit-ups BLUE (4th Gup) ○ CT - 1 year minimum and 100 classes 1st Dan Black Belt Form Tae Geuk 1 – 8 Board Breaks (at least 18 inches, at least 3 breaks with 2 boards each) Pressure Points Diving Roll Scissor Take Down Hip Throw Random SDA's Random Q&A Multi-Opponent Sparring 60 push-ups 60 sit-ups 2nd Degree (2nd Dan) CT - 2 years minimum and 200 classes 1st and 2nd Dan Black Belt Form Tae Geuk 1 – 8 Board Breaks (at least 18 inches, at least 3 breaks with 2 boards each) Pressure Points Random SDA's Random Q&A 1-on-1 Sparring 2-on-1 Sparring 60 push-ups 60 sit-ups 3rd Degree (3rd Dan) CT - 3 years minimum and 300 classes 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Dan Black Belt Form Tae Geuk 1 – 8 Board Breaks (at least 18 inches worth, at least 3 breaks with 2 boards each, 1 break with 3 boards) Pressure Points Random SDA's Random Q&A 1-on-1 Sparring 2-on-1 Sparring 60 push-ups 60 sit-ups .
