October 28-29, 2019: The IBA, Karachi partnered with the Inter University Consortium for Promotion of Social Sciences (IUCPSS) to host a two-day event at the main campus. The event started off with an inauguration ceremony with the Governor , Mr. Imran Ismail as chief guest. It was attended by almost 20 Vice-Chancellors of multiple universities, IBA students and alumni along with students from other universities. The IBA students gave an overview of the convention followed by National Coordinator IUCPSS Mr. Murtaza Noor who highlighted the importance of universities in facilitating social interactions. ED IBA, Karachi Dr. Farrukh Iqbal emphasized the role of youth in peace building and development of the nation. Governor Sindh encouraged the youth to remain and excel in their country instead of going abroad and said, “We want the youth to believe in this country. This country is a land of opportunities and is open for everyone. We need to have faith in our country.” Throughout the Expo, multiple sessions were conducted on various topics which included Entrepreneurship - A better choice for earning livelihood, University youth as a source of tolerance, Dialogue and conflict management, Responsive Pakistan for a just and equitable society, Media, Cybercrime, Youth and peace building and Role of youth in drug free campuses and society.

October 26, 2019: The IBA-CEE launched the IBA Dispute Resolution Forum (DRF) at the city campus to promote services such as mediation, arbitration and conciliation as effective means of resolving disputes especially in the civil/commercial space. The IBA DRF is inspired by the Harvard Negotiation Project. The Forum is spearheaded by an Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) team, comprising of Advocate of the High Courts of Pakistan and Chair ICC Mediation Commission Ms. Navin Merchant; General Consul, Company Secretary and Head Corporate Communications ICI Pakistan Limited Ms. Nausheen Ahmad; Advocate and Assistant Professor IBA Karachi Mr. Mohammad Sohaib Saleem; and Barrister at Ijaz Ahmed and Associates, Hardwicke Chambers in Lincoln’s Inn, London and Advocate High Court, Altaf Qureshi. Chief guest CEO Pakistan Business Council Mr. Ehsan Malik highlighted the issues faced by businesses in Pakistan. He stated, “Dispute resolution processes in Pakistan are lengthy and rarely conclusive, which stifles growth and innovation, impedes investment and results in red tape. Pakistan has been ranked 136 out of 190 countries for ease of doing business by the World Bank and on the index of enforcing contracts, the country was ranked 156.” ED IBA Dr. Iqbal said that, “Through forums such as the IBA Dispute Resolution Forum, we can offer business expeditious and cost-effective means for dispute resolution, therefore increasing confidence and removing impediments.” The ceremony ended with a vote of thanks by Director IBA-CEE Mr. Jami Moiz who also presented a token of appreciation to the chief guest. October 11, 2019: In the loving memory of Senior Manager Administration IBA Karachi, Syed Muhammad Rizwan Rizvi, the IBA organized a memorial session at the G&T Auditorium. The memorial was attended by friends and family of Mr. Rizvi, ED Dr. Farrukh Iqbal, Associate Dean FBA Dr. Huma Baqai, former Registrar IBA, Capt. (Retd.) Ahmed Zaheer, and IBA faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The session started with a recitation from the Holy Quran. Dr. Iqbal conveyed condolences to the family of Mr. Rizvi on behalf of the former Dean and Director IBA Dr. Ishrat Husain. Dr. Iqbal also praised Rizwan Sahab’s exemplary work ethic and his dedication towards the Institute. Moreover, faculty members and heads of departments also conveyed their condolences to the family. A shield was also presented to Mr. Rizvi’s family in recognition of his services to the Institute. The session was followed by a Quran Khawani at the IBA mosque.

Testing unchartered territories

The IBA Testing and Admissions department became the first testing agency in Pakistan to conduct recruitment tests across the globe simultaneously. Candidates residing in the UK, Canada, UAE and Pakistan took the test for the position of Trade Officers sanctioned by the Ministry of Commerce, . During the year, a total of 16 recruitment tests were conducted for renowned public and private organizations in which more than 3,000 candidates applied and were tested for key positions at Sindh Revenue Board, Sindh Healthcare Commission, Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis & HRD, NICL, PWC Ferguson, Sindh Universities & Boards Department and Ministry of Commerce etc. An increase of 13% was also observed during the current admission year, where more than 11,000 candidates applied for admissions from more than 200 different cities and villages from across Pakistan. Due to fixed intake and an increasing number of applicants, the admission and enrollment percentage was recorded around 12% and is expected to decline further every year. An increased number of applicants at the IBA and demand for its testing services is due to the Institute’s legacy of excellence and immense brand equity. The department is set to establish a new benchmark for testing services in the coming years.

IBA student wins Gold and Silver medals in Weightlifting Championships, UK

October 12-13, 2019: IBA student Rabia Shahzad won a gold medal in Hampshire Weightlifting Championship in Basingstoke, UK and a silver medal in the Welsh Open Weightlifting Championship in Cardiff, Wales.

The IBA congratulates Rabia on her remarkable achievements and wishes her the best in future endeavors.

CEE: Developing Specialized Business Skills

Managing a Family Business During Tough Economic Times October 17, 2019: The IBA-CEE Family Managed Business Program organized a seminar titled “Managing a Family Business During Tough Economic Times” at the city campus. Director Center for Executive Education Mr. Jami Moiz presented a welcome note. Addressing the audience Mr. Moiz stressed the importance of family businesses and shared details about the IBA Family Managed Business Program. The seminar proceeded with a lecture by Professor Kamil Shahbazkar in which he shared solutions to the problems faced by Pakistani Family Businesses. He also presented a road map which the family businesses can undertake to ensure sustainability and success. CED: Building Entrepreneurial Abilities

A Session on Entrepreneurial Leadership by Mr. Qasim Ali Shah The IBA Aman CED invited Mr. Qasim Ali Shah, a renowned motivational speaker, to give a session about Entrepreneurial Leadership. The session was attended by IBA staff, students and alumni.

Program Director Aman CED Dr. Shahid Qureshi welcomed Mr. Shah and talked about the CED model and CED’s efforts to inculcate entrepreneurial mindset among common Pakistanis. Mr. Shah shed light on the concept of Khudi in Iqbal’s poetry and its application in our daily lives. His talk covered a variety of topics including self-development and personal growth.

Inauguration of IBA (WEP)- Cycle 2 under the initiative of IBA (NEP)

October 4, 2019: IBA Aman CED in collaboration with Interloop Limited and Government College Women University Faisalabad (GCWUF), launched the IBA Women Entrepreneurship Program (WEP) Cycle 2 in Faisalabad under the initiative of IBA National Entrepreneurship Program (NEP). The objective of this training was to facilitate the women to identify their true entrepreneurial potential and to become nation builders for the future. The training program had around 60 participants, including students from various educational and vocational institutes throughout Faisalabad. During the training, the concept of Causation vs. Effectuation was highlighted with emphasis on the fact that entrepreneurship does not involve gathering the means to start a business venture but to leverage on existing resources.

Mothers’ Entrepreneurship Camp (MEC) Autumn 2019

October 25-27, 2019: The IBA Aman CED organized the Mothers’ Entrepreneurship Camp (MEC)-Autumn. The purpose of this camp was to expose the participants to the entrepreneurial values and skills so that they can unleash their and their kids’ entrepreneurial potential. The program highlighted the importance of ethical, environmental and social sensitivities for preparing the future generation of entrepreneurs. The participants learned how to invest minimally by using the bird in hand principle effectually to start a small business. On the last day, the participants’ spouses were also invited to attend an orientation session and were encouraged to support their wives in their entrepreneurial journeys.

Youth Entrepreneurship Project

October-December, 2019: IBA Aman CED, in collaboration with PSO-CSR Trust, has kick-started the Youth Entrepreneurship Project (YEP) for the marginalized youth of Karachi. The IBA-PSO Youth Entrepreneurship project aims to provide micro entrepreneurship and life skills training to 125 vulnerable members of the youth primarily from marginalized areas of Karachi which include, but are not limited to Lyari, Korangi, Sultanabad, , Malir, Shah Faisal, Orangi, Baldia, SITE town, North Karachi, New Karachi, F.B. Area, Liaquatabad, Mehmoodabad, Qayyumabad, Lines Area, Pak Colony and Nazimabad. The course commenced from October 30, 2019 and will continue till December 31, 2019. Marketing Round Up

Marketing department visits the following institutes Rayden College IBA conducts Campus Tour for Rayden College Students October 4, 2019: The IBA Marketing team October 18, 2019: IBA arranged a campus tour for 27 students from Rayden College. The proceedings began with a visited Rayden College as a part of their half-hour presentation and an interactive Q&A session. City School Darakshan Campus October 3, 2019: The Marketing team was invited by City School Darakshan Campus to brief the A’ level second year students on its academic programs. The IBA showcased its two most popular programs apart from its BBA program. Program Director for Social Sciences and Liberal Arts (SSLA) Dr. Gibran Siddiqui represented the BS SSLA program, and Assistant Professor Dr. Imran Khan represented the BS Computer Science program.

Graduation Ceremony of Alpha College’s first A level batch

Assistant Professor and Academic Director HRM, Ms. Nyla Ansari attended the graduation ceremony of Alpha College as chief guest for its first A levels batch. 1200 people including students, parents, faculty and directors of Alpha College attended the ceremony. Ms. Ansari delivered a speech to guide the students about career advancement, she encouraged the students to follow their dreams and build their future around their potential. Emphasizing on developing leadership skills, she talked about respecting peers and developing one’s personality.

Resource Mobilization Activities

Akhuwat collaborates with RM department to provide interest-free loans October 2, 2019: The IBA, Karachi's RM department organized an orientation session at the main campus to provide information about its collaboration with Akhuwat Islamic Microfinance. The session was conducted by Area Manager Akhuwat Mr. Kamran Qureshi, and attended by students as well as representatives of the RM department. According to this collaboration, Akhuwat will provide loans of maximum Rs. 75,000/- to deserving final year students who will be required to repay the loan by their graduation. However, students unable to do so will be given a time extension to return the amount.

MOU Signing Ceremony between the IBA, Karachi and G.E.A.R.

October 18, 2019: The IBA, Karachi signed an MOU with Generating Employment Alternatives for Self-Reliance (G.E.A.R.) to sponsor up to 5 students for the duration of their studies. The objective of the scholarship is to cultivate and foster the education of promising young leaders attending the Institute. The eligibility of the scholarship is based on academic excellence and financial need. The Institute was represented by ED Dr. Farrukh Iqbal and Head of Corporate Relations and Communications Mrs. Malahat Awan, while G.E.A.R. was represented by CEO Mr. Ekhlaque Ahmed and Board of Trustees, Mr. Javed Batla and Mr. Farooq Hyder Shaikh. The IBA Resource Mobilization department is striving to create new avenues for helping the financially constrained students at the IBA. Every year 4000 students get enrolled in the IBA in undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs. More than one fourth of the student population is provided with some form of financial assistance from the Institute with generous contribution from philanthropists, corporate entities and governmental bodies. Mood Camp: Dealing with difficult emotions October 10, 2019: The CEJ-IBA’s Wellbeing Centre conducted a session on World Mental Health Day. The session was conducted by clinical psychologists at the Wellbeing Centre, Ms. Mahnoor Shaikh and Dr. Asha Bedar with the purpose to raise awareness on mental health and how media workers can improve interaction and performance with others in the newsroom. Trainers discussed how journalists can manage stress, anxiety and depression. Launch of Journalism Society October 21, 2019: The IBA, Karachi launched a Journalism Society at the Aman CED. The event was organized by the IBA Journalism Society members and students of CEJ-IBA’s Masters in Journalism program. Prominent journalists Mubashir Zaidi and Zarrar Khuhro shared their insights on the future of journalism in the digital age. Speakers discussed challenges of digital journalism and news credibility on social media platforms.

Humanitarian Reporting Workshop October 22-23, 2019: A two-day Humanitarian Reporting Workshop was conducted by CEJ-IBA in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The trainer for the workshop was a communication professional dedicated to the field of development Mr. Shahzad Sharjeel, while guest lectures were delivered by Associate Professor for City and Regional Planning SSLA Department IBA Karachi and Director KUL Dr. Nausheen H. Anwar; Dawn Media Group’s Chief Digital Strategist Shaheryar Popalzai; PhD scholar Computer Science Department IBA Karachi Anwar ul Haque; and Deputy Head of Communications ICRC Rimsha Qureshi. The intensive two-day training covered topics such as international humanitarian law, tips on how to work with INGOs and a detailed understanding of flood management systems, disaster management authority and risk assessment. 3rd ICRC Humanitarian Reporting Awards October 24, 2019: The 3rd ICRC Humanitarian Reporting Awards were conferred on seven journalists for outstanding contributions in humanitarian reporting at the CEJ-IBA. The awards were jointly organized by the CEJ-IBA and ICRC. The awards were organized to promote ethical, accurate and responsible reporting on humanitarian issues including violence against healthcare workers, disaster reporting, issues related to people with disabilities, disaster response/preparedness, and other similar issues. NBEAC and NCEAC Re-Accreditation visits at IBA Karachi September 27, 2019: The Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) at IBA Karachi welcomed the Accreditation Inspection Committee (AIC) from National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC) to re-accredit the BS Computer Science program. The AIC comprised of Associate Professor NUST School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Dr. Sharifullah Khan and Assistant Professor NUML Department of Engineering Dr. Basit Shahzad. The visit concluded with an exit meeting in which the participants included all members of the AIC and relevant IBA stakeholders. October 3-5, 2019: The QEC at IBA Karachi welcomed the AIC from National Business Education Accreditation Council (NBEAC) to re-accredit the MBA and BBA programs, and accredit the BS AF program. The AIC from NBEAC comprised of Professor SDSB, LUMS (Chairman PRT) Dr. Jawad Syed; Dean NUST Business School Dr. Naukhez Sarwar; Dean FAST School of Management, FAST NUCES Islamabad Dr. Sadia Nadeem; Dean Air University, Islamabad Dr. Idrees Khawaja; Executive Vice President, National Bank of Pakistan Dr. Arshad Khan; and Program Director NBEAC Mr. Ahtesham Ali Raja. The team was briefed by ED IBA Dr. Farrukh Iqbal about the Institute’s strategic direction, program overview, infrastructure and facilities. The two days that followed were characterized by meetings, classroom visits, campus tours, and concluded with an exit meeting with the AIC members, ED IBA and other relevant stakeholders present. October 17, 2019: Team QEC participated in a guest speaker session titled Cornerstones of Internal Quality Assurance for Higher Education Institutions in Pakistan organized by Dow University of Health Sciences. The session was chaired by Director Quality Management and Accreditation, QEC, Jinnah Sindh Medical University, Dr. Abdul Wahid Usmani at Karachi Expo Center. Dr. Usmani specified about the internal as well as external quality assurance measures that must be incorporated in the intricacies of higher education. October 24, 2019: Team QEC team attended an interactive workshop titled Challenging Dynamics of Assessment Methodology at Higher Education organized by the QEC of Dadabhoy Institute of Higher Education. It was facilitated by Director QEC , Dr. Arshia Samin Naqvi Consultative session on increasing collaboration among QECs October 18, 2019: QEC at IBA Karachi organized a consultative session for selected QECs from different universities of Karachi offering business education. The session was led by Director QEC IBA Karachi Dr. Amber Gul Rashid. The session aimed to discuss collaborative activities which universities could pilot for the next six months. Universities had shared their ideas prior to attending the consultative session. These were shared anonymously and participants were invited to select two ideas and present them, incorporating details of how the ideas would materialize and the outcome measured. After a shortlisting process, the final three ideas were decided by an anonymous vote. Representatives from Jinnah Sindh Medical University, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology and Dadabhoy Institute of Higher Education volunteered to coordinate the pilot phase for each of the three selected ideas. Another session will be organized by IBA Karachi in six months where all QECs will come together to assess progress. BBSHRRDB Certificate Distribution Ceremony October 3, 2019: A certificate distribution ceremony of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed, Human Resource Research Development Board (BBSHRRDB) was held at the city campus. The chief guest of the ceremony was Director General Information Science and Technology Department Government of Sindh Mr. Muhammad Yousuf. The event was attended by the IBA faculty, staff and students. Director ICT and CICT Mr. Imran Batada congratulated all students for successfully completing their courses. Addressing on the occasion, Mr. Yousuf congratulated the participants of the program and wished them good luck with their careers.
