IBA KARACHI | www.iba.edu.pk Issue 19 | October 2019 3rd International Student Convention and Expo October 28-29, 2019: The IBA, Karachi partnered with the Inter University Consortium for Promotion of Social Sciences Pakistan (IUCPSS) to host a two-day event at the main campus. The event started off with an inauguration ceremony with the Governor Sindh, Mr. Imran Ismail as chief guest. It was attended by almost 20 Vice-Chancellors of multiple universities, IBA students and alumni along with students from other universities. The IBA students gave an overview of the convention followed by National Coordinator IUCPSS Mr. Murtaza Noor who highlighted the importance of universities in facilitating social interactions. ED IBA, Karachi Dr. Farrukh Iqbal emphasized the role of youth in peace building and development of the nation. Governor Sindh encouraged the youth to remain and excel in their country instead of going abroad and said, “We want the youth to believe in this country. This country is a land of opportunities and is open for everyone. We need to have faith in our country.” Throughout the Expo, multiple sessions were conducted on various topics which included Entrepreneurship - A better choice for earning livelihood, University youth as a source of tolerance, Dialogue and conflict management, Responsive Pakistan for a just and equitable society, Media, Cybercrime, Youth and peace building and Role of youth in drug free campuses and society. First year of the IBA Job Portal IBA Pilgrimage (Umrah) Draw October, 2019: Aiming to simplify the recruitment process, October 31, 2019: Team IBA Karachi would like to congratulate the following IBA staff and the IBA Job Portal was launched in October 2018 and has faculty members for being selected through a lucky draw for Umrah for the year 2019, held at the been a huge success among all our stakeholders within a Alumni Students’ Center: short span of time. Driver IBA, Karachi launches Dispute Resolution Forum October 26, 2019: The IBA-CEE launched the IBA Dispute Resolution Forum (DRF) at the city campus to promote services such as mediation, arbitration and conciliation as effective means of resolving disputes especially in the civil/commercial space. The IBA DRF is inspired by the Harvard Negotiation Project. The Forum is spearheaded by an Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) team, comprising of Advocate of the High Courts of Pakistan and Chair ICC Mediation Commission Ms. Navin Merchant; General Consul, Company Secretary and Head Corporate Communications ICI Pakistan Limited Ms. Nausheen Ahmad; Advocate and Assistant Professor IBA Karachi Mr. Mohammad Sohaib Saleem; and Barrister at Ijaz Ahmed and Associates, Hardwicke Chambers in Lincoln’s Inn, London and Advocate High Court, Altaf Qureshi. Chief guest CEO Pakistan Business Council Mr. Ehsan Malik highlighted the issues faced by businesses in Pakistan. He stated, “Dispute resolution processes in Pakistan are lengthy and rarely conclusive, which stifles growth and innovation, impedes investment and results in red tape. Pakistan has been ranked 136 out of 190 countries for ease of doing business by the World Bank and on the index of enforcing contracts, the country was ranked 156.” ED IBA Dr. Iqbal said that, “Through forums such as the IBA Dispute Resolution Forum, we can offer business expeditious and cost-effective means for dispute resolution, therefore increasing confidence and removing impediments.” The ceremony ended with a vote of thanks by Director IBA-CEE Mr. Jami Moiz who also presented a token of appreciation to the chief guest. Remembering Syed M. Rizwan Rizvi October 11, 2019: In the loving memory of Senior Manager Administration IBA Karachi, Syed Muhammad Rizwan Rizvi, the IBA organized a memorial session at the G&T Auditorium. The memorial was attended by friends and family of Mr. Rizvi, ED Dr. Farrukh Iqbal, Associate Dean FBA Dr. Huma Baqai, former Registrar IBA, Capt. (Retd.) Ahmed Zaheer, and IBA faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The session started with a recitation from the Holy Quran. Dr. Iqbal conveyed condolences to the family of Mr. Rizvi on behalf of the former Dean and Director IBA Dr. Ishrat Husain. Dr. Iqbal also praised Rizwan Sahab’s exemplary work ethic and his dedication towards the Institute. Moreover, faculty members and heads of departments also conveyed their condolences to the family. A shield was also presented to Mr. Rizvi’s family in recognition of his services to the Institute. The session was followed by a Quran Khawani at the IBA mosque. Testing unchartered territories The IBA Testing and Admissions department became the first testing agency in Pakistan to conduct recruitment tests across the globe simultaneously. Candidates residing in the UK, Canada, UAE and Pakistan took the test for the position of Trade Officers sanctioned by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of Pakistan. During the year, a total of 16 recruitment tests were conducted for renowned public and private organizations in which more than 3,000 candidates applied and were tested for key positions at Sindh Revenue Board, Sindh Healthcare Commission, Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis & HRD, NICL, PWC Ferguson, Sindh Universities & Boards Department and Ministry of Commerce etc. An increase of 13% was also observed during the current admission year, where more than 11,000 candidates applied for admissions from more than 200 different cities and villages from across Pakistan. Due to fixed intake and an increasing number of applicants, the admission and enrollment percentage was recorded around 12% and is expected to decline further every year. An increased number of applicants at the IBA and demand for its testing services is due to the Institute’s legacy of excellence and immense brand equity. The department is set to establish a new benchmark for testing services in the coming years. IBA student wins Gold and Silver medals in Weightlifting Championships, UK October 12-13, 2019: IBA student Rabia Shahzad won a gold medal in Hampshire Weightlifting Championship in Basingstoke, UK and a silver medal in the Welsh Open Weightlifting Championship in Cardiff, Wales. The IBA congratulates Rabia on her remarkable achievements and wishes her the best in future endeavors. CEE: Developing Specialized Business Skills Managing a Family Business During Tough Economic Times October 17, 2019: The IBA-CEE Family Managed Business Program organized a seminar titled “Managing a Family Business During Tough Economic Times” at the city campus. Director Center for Executive Education Mr. Jami Moiz presented a welcome note. Addressing the audience Mr. Moiz stressed the importance of family businesses and shared details about the IBA Family Managed Business Program. The seminar proceeded with a lecture by Professor Kamil Shahbazkar in which he shared solutions to the problems faced by Pakistani Family Businesses. He also presented a road map which the family businesses can undertake to ensure sustainability and success. CED: Building Entrepreneurial Abilities A Session on Entrepreneurial Leadership by Mr. Qasim Ali Shah The IBA Aman CED invited Mr. Qasim Ali Shah, a renowned motivational speaker, to give a session about Entrepreneurial Leadership. The session was attended by IBA staff, students and alumni. Program Director Aman CED Dr. Shahid Qureshi welcomed Mr. Shah and talked about the CED model and CED’s efforts to inculcate entrepreneurial mindset among common Pakistanis. Mr. Shah shed light on the concept of Khudi in Iqbal’s poetry and its application in our daily lives. His talk covered a variety of topics including self-development and personal growth. Inauguration of IBA (WEP)- Cycle 2 under the initiative of IBA (NEP) October 4, 2019: IBA Aman CED in collaboration with Interloop Limited and Government College Women University Faisalabad (GCWUF), launched the IBA Women Entrepreneurship Program (WEP) Cycle 2 in Faisalabad under the initiative of IBA National Entrepreneurship Program (NEP). The objective of this training was to facilitate the women to identify their true entrepreneurial potential and to become nation builders for the future. The training program had around 60 participants, including students from various educational and vocational institutes throughout Faisalabad. During the training, the concept of Causation vs. Effectuation was highlighted with emphasis on the fact that entrepreneurship does not involve gathering the means to start a business venture but to leverage on existing resources. Mothers’ Entrepreneurship Camp (MEC) Autumn 2019 October 25-27, 2019: The IBA Aman CED organized the Mothers’ Entrepreneurship Camp (MEC)-Autumn. The purpose of this camp was to expose the participants to the entrepreneurial values and skills so that they can unleash their and their kids’ entrepreneurial potential. The program highlighted the
