Preparing to Use Overdrive Get Started With OverDrive You will need to: Create an Adobe ID Download the Overdrive Media Console for audio books, videos and music Download the Adobe Digital Editions for e-books Create an Adobe ID To create an Adobe ID, go to https://www.adobe.com/account/sign- in.adobedotcom.html and complete the application. OverDrive Media Console Starting at ctdl.lib.overdrive.com, click on OverDrive Media Console on the left column, under “Digital Software”. On the right hand side, make sure that the correct device is selected (Windows, Mac, or your type of mobile phone). Click the “Download Now” button underneath this list and it will walk you through installation. Adobe Digital Editions Starting at ctdl.lib.overdrive.com, click on Adobe Digital Editions on the left column, under “Digital Software”. Click the “Download Adobe Digital Editions” button. Scroll down and click the “Install” button and it will walk you through installation. OverDrive has lots of help built in! Go to the Digital Help link in the left column for assistance with getting started and using OverDrive, OverDrive Media Console, and Adobe Digital Editions. Search through the Buda Public Library’s catalog Search through the Central Texas Digital Library (CTDL) catalog Through the Buda Public Library’s catalog - Sign in to the catalog with your card number and phone number Search for an item, just like you would search for a physical item. If the item is in OverDrive, it will say _OverDrive in the Location column and OverDrive eBook/eAudioBook/Music/Video before the title. Click on the title to bring up the record. Click “Download this item”. That will take you to the CTDL page for that item. or… After you sign in to your account, scroll down and click the OverDrive link to go to the CTDL catalog. Through the CTDL catalog- Go to ctdl.lib.overdrive.com and sign in with your card number and phone number. You can search for an item by keyword or browse by format and subject using the menus on the left column. NOTE: THE PIN IS YOUR PHONE NUMBER OverDrive has lots of help built in! Go to the Digital Help links in the left column for assistance with getting started and using OverDrive, OverDrive Media Console, and Adobe Digital Editions. Check to make sure that your device is compatible with OverDrive at http://www.overdrive.com/resources/drc/ Contact Buda Public Library for more help! 512-295-5899 or [email protected] Checking Out OverDrive Materials Reserve a title: If an item is currently checked out, you can reserve it. Click the “Place a Reserve” link and enter your email address. OverDrive will email you when the item is available. You will have three days to return to the OverDrive site to download it. Get it by clicking on “My Account” in the green bar. Next, click “My Reserves”. You can check out the item from there. Click the “Add to Cart” link. From there, you may continue browsing or go to checkout. You can have 5 items out at one time. When you’re ready to check out, click “Proceed to Checkout”. If you’re sure, click “Confirm check out”. Next, click the “Download” button to start the download. If you are asked if you want to Open or Save the item, select Open. This will open the item in either Adobe Digital Editions (for e-books) or OverDrive Media Console. Transferring to Your Device Once you have checked out an e-book and downloaded it to your computer, you can transfer it to your e-reader. Plug your e-reader in to your computer to transfer e-books to it. Open Adobe Digital Editions. Select the 'Library View' icon (in the upper left corner). The Adobe Digital Editions library is displayed. Click on the Adobe eBook you want to transfer. Drag the Adobe eBook to the eBook device icon in the left pane of Adobe Digital Editions. The 'Copy Documents' dialog box is displayed and the title is transferred. When transfer is complete the 'Copy Documents' dialog box closes. Disconnect the eBook device and enjoy the eBook on-the-go. Transfer an audio book to a supported portable device using the Transfer Wizard in OverDrive Media Console. If you have not already done so, verify that the permissions on the title allow you to transfer the title to your supported portable device (publishers may opt to disable this functionality for certain devices). Connect your portable player to your computer. In OverDrive Media Console, highlight a title and click the 'Transfer' button. The Transfer Wizard is displayed. Verify that the correct title is displayed on the first screen of the Transfer Wizard and click 'Next'. The Transfer Wizard searches for a connected portable device. If your device is not detected, the Transfer Wizard will display a message stating Contact Buda Public Library for more help! 512-295-5899 or [email protected] that 'no portable players could be found.' If your device is detected the 'Confirm' screen is displayed. In the 'Confirm' dialog box, select the Part(s) you want to transfer by checking the box(es) next to the Part name(s). Click 'Next' to begin transferring the file(s) to your device. When the transfer is complete, the Transfer Wizard displays a 'Success' message. Click 'Finish' to exit the Transfer Wizard. Disconnect your portable device. These instructions and much more information can be found in the CTDL's Digital Help section. Go to ctdl.lib.overdrive.com and click on the Digital Help – FAQ link on the left side of the screen. Circulation Guidelines 5 items can be checked out on an account 3 items can be reserved All items are checked out for 14 days. There are no renewals. If your check out time is up, the item will return to the library. If no one else has reserved it, you may check it out and download it again. Return eBooks Early If you finish with an item you have checked out early, you can return it. This will help speed up holds list and also allow you to check out more items. Open Adobe Digital Editions. Select “Library” from the upper-left corner. Right-click on the title you'd like to return. Click “Return Borrowed Item.” A dialog will appear asking if you're sure you want to return the item. Click “Return” to confirm. Return MP3 Audio Books Early Because of OverDrive’s agreements with publishers, only MP3 audiobooks can be returned early. Other formats just have to wait until the check-out period is over. Select the title you would like to return. You can select more than one audiobook by holding down the “Ctrl” on your keyboard and clicking on each title. Click the “Delete” button to display the return and delete options. Click “Return/Delete” to both return the MP3 audiobook and delete it from your computer.     Apple and Android Devices: Downloading eBooks and audiobooks using OverDrive Media Console App On your device, go to the App Store or Google Play Store and download the OverDrive App. Once the app is on your device, open it. You will be prompted to register with OverDrive. You are able to skip this step if you do not wish to register with OverDrive. Registering allows you to have your email address and information saved so you will be notified of expiring titles and holds. After you create an account, the below picture will come up on the screen. In the left hand corner of the screen, click and choose Add a Library. Type in your zip code or search by library name. Click any library in Allegheny County. On the next screen under Library Systems, click the star and next to it will read: Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh/Allegheny County. Once that is selected, it will open to the below screen. You will see the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny County Library Association logos at the top of the page. To sign in to your account to check out eBooks, click Sign In on the right side of the screen. It will bring you to a screen where you type in your library card number. You are now signed up and ready to download an eBook! To download a book, click the menu button to browse for different titles in various genres or use the search bar to find what you are looking for. Once you find a title, you can click on the book.

    Self-Publishing: Easy as ABC Meredith Bond www.anessabooks.com [email protected] J: Formatting with Jutoh For those of you who are not so computer savvy or just want an easier way of formatting your book, you can also convert your Word document into an epub and mobi file using the paid program, Jutoh. Jutoh is a program created for authors to convert their work into an ebook. That is its originally intention, unlike Calibre which has been used that way despite the fact that that’s not what it was meant for. Because it was meant for authors, it has a lot of great features which make formatting beautiful books easy, as you’re about to see. It’s not very expensive ($39) and has a devoted following of people who happily share information on how to use the program—there’s even a Yahoo group devoted to it where the developer answers questions that others cannot. Jutoh will use the clean, formatted document you created at the beginning of this lesson to organize and create your ebook. Basically, you are doing most of the formatting in Microsoft Word and then adding in all the fun stuff using Jutoh. If you want, you can directly import your cleaned Word document into Jutoh and then add all the styles and page breaks there, but Word is easier to work in (the window is larger and the text is easier to see). Before you begin to read this long and detailed explanation of how to format your book in Jutoh, please know that I created a video that shows you how to do all of this.

For the full text of this licence, please go to: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.5/ Access to books for the visually impaired: minimising charity and maximising choice Bradley Guy Whitehouse Abstract This research aims to find ways of making access to copyrighted books for the visually impaired as much a matter of choice as possible by moving the provision of access away from models based on charity and of building the provision of access into the mainstream. The work of third sector organisations providing access and attempts by the visually impaired community itself to enhance access are described. Realities effecting support workers in universities who have to help visually impaired students investigated. Legal disputes relating to copyright and anti-discrimination law are discussed. Developments in the ebooks market are monitored with a particular reference to attempts to build accessibility into devices like the Kindle and Apple products. The research also looks at how best to secure access to online bookshops, web pages offering ebooks for download in public libraries and ebook libraries in academia. The current level of access being achieved in this area is assessed. Next ongoing attempts to improve access and differing views on the advisability of an approach based on enforcement of the Worldwide Web Consortium’s accessibility guidelines or a more flexible approach emphasising user testing are discussed. Conclusions and recommendations: changes to copyright law and further development and clarification of anti-discrimination law as it applies to publishers are necessary.
