Monthly Highlights from TBBC January 2021 TALKING BOOK & BRAILLE CENTER A MESSAGE FROM THE NEW JERSEY STATE LIBRARIAN This will be my last newsletter message. I will be retiring on January 31st. Jennifer Nelson has been named as the next State Librarian. I have been reflecting on the past eight years. While I believe that the State Library has made many advances across the state, none has been as positive and fulfilling as the services to you, our TBBC patrons. You can go to public libraries in almost every county for help to download books and magazines. TBBC can now send multiple books on a single cartridge and TBBC is now piloting a Braille device that fits into the palm of your hand. Such advances are truly remarkable and will get better. So as I leave a job I love, I love that you can now get “any book, any time.” Take care and be safe. Thank you, Mary Mary L. Wu1 Academic libraries face numerous stressors as they seek to meet the needs of their users through technological advances while adhering to copyright laws. This paper seeks to explore one specific proposal to balance these interests, the impact of recent decisions on its viability, and the copyright challenges that remain after these decisions. The challenges facing academic law libraries are many, but the three primary ones are budget, demand, and misperceptions. Though actual means and medians of collection expenditures continue to grow,2 they have failed to keep pace with inflation rates,3 resulting in a net decrease in spending power over the last decade. On a different front, student and faculty appetites for multiple formats and interdisciplinary research sources continue to expand, placing greater strain on shrinking budgets. -

Apple and Android Devices: Downloading eBooks and audiobooks using OverDrive Media Console App On your device, go to the App Store or Google Play Store and download the OverDrive App. Once the app is on your device, open it. You will be prompted to register with OverDrive. You are able to skip this step if you do not wish to register with OverDrive. Registering allows you to have your email address and information saved so you will be notified of expiring titles and holds. After you create an account, the below picture will come up on the screen. In the left hand corner of the screen, click and choose Add a Library. Type in your zip code or search by library name. Click any library in Allegheny County. On the next screen under Library Systems, click the star and next to it will read: Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh/Allegheny County. Once that is selected, it will open to the below screen. You will see the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny County Library Association logos at the top of the page. To sign in to your account to check out eBooks, click Sign In on the right side of the screen. It will bring you to a screen where you type in your library card number. You are now signed up and ready to download an eBook!
