EPUB files can be opened in most eBook readers, like the B&N Nook and Kobo eReader. EPUB files have to be converted before they're usable on the Amazon Kindle. EPUB files can also be opened on a computer with various free programs in- cluding Calibre, Adobe Digital Editions, Stanza Desktop, Mobipocket Reader Desktop, Okular, and many more. Plenty of iPhone and Android apps also exist that allow viewing of EPUB files. There's even a Firefox Add-on, EPUBReader, that allows you to read EPUB files in the browser just like other documents. Reading EPUB/PDF Books Using Adobe Digital Editions You can check out EPUB and PDF eBooks within Axis 360 and read them using Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your desktop and/or eReader device via a USB connection. To download ADE for your desktop, click here. For ADE-specific help, click here. Check Out EPUB/PDF Titles 1. Find the EPUB/PDF title you wish to check out on your school or library’s Axis 360 website. 2. Select EPUB or PDF for the Format and click Checkout. 3. Click OK on the confirmation message to proceed. If you haven’t already downloaded ADE to your desktop, click on the App Zone link within the confirmation message to find a download link. 4. Click the Download link that appears next to your book and save it to your desktop. Make a note of where you saved the file, as you will need to access it to read your eBook. Read EPUB/PDF eBooks On Your Desktop Double-click on your downloaded eBook file. It will automatically open within ADE and you can begin reading from there. Self-Publishing: Easy as ABC Meredith Bond www.anessabooks.com [email protected] J: Formatting with Jutoh For those of you who are not so computer savvy or just want an easier way of formatting your book, you can also convert your Word document into an epub and mobi file using the paid program, Jutoh. Jutoh is a program created for authors to convert their work into an ebook. That is its originally intention, unlike Calibre which has been used that way despite the fact that that’s not what it was meant for. Because it was meant for authors, it has a lot of great features which make formatting beautiful books easy, as you’re about to see. It’s not very expensive ($39) and has a devoted following of people who happily share information on how to use the program—there’s even a Yahoo group devoted to it where the developer answers questions that others cannot. Jutoh will use the clean, formatted document you created at the beginning of this lesson to organize and create your ebook. Basically, you are doing most of the formatting in Microsoft Word and then adding in all the fun stuff using Jutoh. If you want, you can directly import your cleaned Word document into Jutoh and then add all the styles and page breaks there, but Word is easier to work in (the window is larger and the text is easier to see). Before you begin to read this long and detailed explanation of how to format your book in Jutoh, please know that I created a video that shows you how to do all of this.

Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) is a free software program that allows you to read EPUB and PDF formatted eBooks on a computer and/or transfer them to a compatible device via an USB connection. These instructions will get you started using Adobe Digital Editions. Create an Adobe ID Account To access eBooks in Adobe Digital Editions you will need to set up an Adobe ID account. Go to www.adobe.com. In the top right hand corner of the page, click on the “Sign in” link. Click on the blue “Don’t have an Adobe ID?” link. Fill out the form and press the “Create” button. Make sure to record your email and password for future use. ADE should not be confused with Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is used for viewing PDF files. Adobe provides copy protection for OverDrive, Freading, and EBSCOhost eBooks so that they cannot be illicitly distributed. In addition to the ADE program, you will also have to sign up for an Adobe ID account. This account ties your borrowed eBooks to your computer, allowing ADE to keep track of your due dates. eBooks & Audiobooks What is an eBook? eBooks are electronic versions of books. They can be downloaded from many websites and their text can be displayed on a computer screen, on eBook readers and other mobile devices like smart phones. What is an audiobook? Audiobooks are recorded readings of books. They may be available on CDs and as downloadable files (MP3 or WMA format) that can be played on a computer or portable listening device like an iPod or MP3 player. Downloadable Library eBooks & Audiobooks and “DRM” The library has partnered with a company called OverDrive to make free downloadable eBooks and Audiobooks available to members of Halifax Public Libraries. They can be “checked out” for a limited time just like paper books but you’ll never get a fine because the books expire automatically when your loan period ends! They just stop working on your computer/device. Publishers can’t afford to give books away for free, so they protect their copyright by placing restrictions on the use and transfer of eBooks and Audiobooks. By adding “Digital Rights Management” (DRM) to the book, they prevent users from copying and saving the books in ways that would violate copyright laws. Because of the DRM on library eBooks and Audiobooks you will need special software installed on your computer to use them and they may not be compatible with all devices. Ebook/eAudio instructions using the Overdrive Media Console Use for iPad/iPod/iPhone, Android tablets, Smartphones, Color Nook, Nook Tablet, Nook HD and Kindle Fire To download the Overdrive Media Console from your device’s app store In the App store search for the Overdrive Media Console. Tap the Overdrive Media Console to select. Tap Install Tap Accept and Download, this may take a few moments. Tap Open, to complete installation. Setting a default library on the Overdrive Media Console Tap on the Overdrive Media Console icon on your device Tap on Get Books The first time you download an eBook you will need to find your library, in order to do so tap on Add a Library, tap into the search box, search for your library by either zip-code or city name, tap search. Select your library from the list by tapping on the name. To save your library as a default, tap on the star, in front of the name of the library. Authorizing the Overdrive Media Console with Adobe Digital Editions If you already have an Adobe Digital Edition ID, click on Settings, if you do not have an ID tap on Get ID and follow prompts to create an Adobe Account (Take note of the e-mail you used and the password you created) Tap on Settings Tap into the box for Adobe ID, usually your e-mail that you used to register at Adobe.com Slide up a little and type into the box with your Adobe Digital Edition’s ID password Slide up again and tap on Authorize This step does NOT need to be repeated again Downloading an eBook/eAudio Tap on the Overdrive Media Console icon on your device Once the program opens up, tap the menu icon and tap Get Books Select the library location that you saved earlier by tapping on it Search the website by tapping the search button or select the browse button in the banner along the top.

Get Started With OverDrive You will need to: Create an Adobe ID Download the Overdrive Media Console for audio books, videos and music Download the Adobe Digital Editions for e-books Create an Adobe ID To create an Adobe ID, go to https://www.adobe.com/account/sign- in.adobedotcom.html and complete the application. OverDrive Media Console Starting at ctdl.lib.overdrive.com, click on OverDrive Media Console on the left column, under “Digital Software”. On the right hand side, make sure that the correct device is selected (Windows, Mac, or your type of mobile phone). Click the “Download Now” button underneath this list and it will walk you through installation. Adobe Digital Editions Starting at ctdl.lib.overdrive.com, click on Adobe Digital Editions on the left column, under “Digital Software”. Click the “Download Adobe Digital Editions” button. Scroll down and click the “Install” button and it will walk you through installation. OverDrive has lots of help built in! Go to the Digital Help link in the left column for assistance with getting started and using OverDrive, OverDrive Media Console, and Adobe Digital Editions.
