Adobe Digital Editions: library on your computer or eReader

Pierce County Library System provides a collection of eBooks through Overdrive and Axis360: distributors of digital to libraries. Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) is a free software program that allows you to read EPUB and PDF formatted eBooks on a computer and/or transfer them to a compatible device via an USB connection. These instructions will get you started using Adobe Digital Editions.

Create an Adobe ID Account To access eBooks in Adobe Digital Editions you will need to set up an Adobe ID account.

 Go to www.adobe.com.

 In the top right hand corner of the page, click on the “Sign in” link.

 Click on the blue “Don’t have an Adobe ID?” link.

 Fill out the form and press the “Create” button.

 Make sure to record your email and password for future use.

Download and Install Adobe Digital Editions (ADE)

 On the Adobe website (www.adobe.com) type “adobe digital editions” into the search box in the upper right hand corner of the page.

 Click on Adobe Digital Editions when it appears in the results list.

 Click on the “Download Now” link.

 Select the appropriate version of the ADE software for your computer: Windows or Macintosh (Apple), and allow the application to download and install.

 Start the Adobe Digital Editions program.

 You may be prompted to enter your Adobe ID and password. If not, click on “Help” and select “Authorize Computer”.

 Enter your Adobe account information and click on “Authorize”.

 Download your ePUB or PDF formatted from Overdrive or Axis360.

 If prompted, choose to “Open” the file.

 Adobe Digital Editions will start running and download your to the application .

 If you are not prompted to open or save the file, and ADE does not automatically download your book, locate your downloaded eBook file (usually in your “Downloads” folder).

 Drag and drop the ebook file into the Adobe Digital Editions library.

Transfer to a Device

 Once the book has been added to your Adobe Digital Editions library, the program will open the book for reading on your computer.

 If you would like to transfer your library book to a compatible device, click on the library icon to return to your main menu.

 Connect your eReader or other device to your computer with an USB cord.

 Your eReader will appear as an icon on the left hand side of the application, under “Devices”.

 Make sure “All Items” is selected on the left hand side of the page, this shows all ebooks that you have download and added to ADE.

 Drag and drop your book to the device icon.

 Click on the device icon. The book will now appear in your device’s library.

 Safely disconnect your device from your computer.

Return & Delete

 After a checkout period of 21 days your eBook will expire and will no longer be readable.

 To delete a title in your Adobe Digital Editions library, right click on the book you wish to delete.

 If you select “Return Borrowed Item” the book will be no longer checked out to you and will be deleted from your ADE library.

 If you select “Remove from Bookshelf”, the book will be removed from your computer’s Adobe Digital Editions library, but it will remain checked out to you. If your loan period has not expired you may down- load the title again.
