Apple and Android Devices: Downloading eBooks and audiobooks using OverDrive Media Console App On your device, go to the App Store or Google Play Store and download the OverDrive App. Once the app is on your device, open it. You will be prompted to register with OverDrive. You are able to skip this step if you do not wish to register with OverDrive. Registering allows you to have your email address and information saved so you will be notified of expiring titles and holds. After you create an account, the below picture will come up on the screen. In the left hand corner of the screen, click and choose Add a Library. Type in your zip code or search by library name. Click any library in Allegheny County. On the next screen under Library Systems, click the star and next to it will read: Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh/Allegheny County. Once that is selected, it will open to the below screen. You will see the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny County Library Association logos at the top of the page. To sign in to your account to check out eBooks, click Sign In on the right side of the screen. It will bring you to a screen where you type in your library card number. You are now signed up and ready to download an eBook! To download a book, click the menu button to browse for different titles in various genres or use the search bar to find what you are looking for. Once you find a title, you can click on the book.

For the full text of this licence, please go to: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.5/ Access to books for the visually impaired: minimising charity and maximising choice Bradley Guy Whitehouse Abstract This research aims to find ways of making access to copyrighted books for the visually impaired as much a matter of choice as possible by moving the provision of access away from models based on charity and of building the provision of access into the mainstream. The work of third sector organisations providing access and attempts by the visually impaired community itself to enhance access are described. Realities effecting support workers in universities who have to help visually impaired students investigated. Legal disputes relating to copyright and anti-discrimination law are discussed. Developments in the ebooks market are monitored with a particular reference to attempts to build accessibility into devices like the Kindle and Apple products. The research also looks at how best to secure access to online bookshops, web pages offering ebooks for download in public libraries and ebook libraries in academia. The current level of access being achieved in this area is assessed. Next ongoing attempts to improve access and differing views on the advisability of an approach based on enforcement of the Worldwide Web Consortium’s accessibility guidelines or a more flexible approach emphasising user testing are discussed. Conclusions and recommendations: changes to copyright law and further development and clarification of anti-discrimination law as it applies to publishers are necessary.

Die Datei-Formate, die wir angeschaut haben waren DOC, PDF und EPUB. Wir haben dies auf den Plattformen/Betriebssystemen Windows7, Android 4.1.1 (auf Acer Iconia Tab A700), iOS 6.1.3 (iPad 2) getan. Beim Test haben wir verschiedene Untersuchungskriterien berücksichtigt. Während sowohl die Plattformen/Betriebssysteme, als auch die Datei-Fomate und ebenso die Reader-Softwares einem ständigen Wandel unterliegen, sind die Untersuchungskriterien beständiger und können daher auch zur Einschätzung zukünftiger Reader/Formate verwendet werden. eBooks & Audiobooks What is an eBook? eBooks are electronic versions of books. They can be downloaded from many websites and their text can be displayed on a computer screen, on eBook readers and other mobile devices like smart phones. What is an audiobook? Audiobooks are recorded readings of books. They may be available on CDs and as downloadable files (MP3 or WMA format) that can be played on a computer or portable listening device like an iPod or MP3 player. Downloadable Library eBooks & Audiobooks and “DRM” The library has partnered with a company called OverDrive to make free downloadable eBooks and Audiobooks available to members of Halifax Public Libraries. They can be “checked out” for a limited time just like paper books but you’ll never get a fine because the books expire automatically when your loan period ends! They just stop working on your computer/device. Publishers can’t afford to give books away for free, so they protect their copyright by placing restrictions on the use and transfer of eBooks and Audiobooks. By adding “Digital Rights Management” (DRM) to the book, they prevent users from copying and saving the books in ways that would violate copyright laws. Because of the DRM on library eBooks and Audiobooks you will need special software installed on your computer to use them and they may not be compatible with all devices.
