You will be prompted to register with OverDrive. You are able to skip this step if you do not wish to register with OverDrive. Registering allows you to have your email address and information saved so you will be notified of expiring titles and holds. After you create an account, the below picture will come up on the screen. In the left hand corner of the screen, click and choose Add a Library. Type in your zip code or search by library name. For the full text of this licence, please go to: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.5/ Access to books for the visually impaired: minimising charity and maximising choice Bradley Guy Whitehouse Abstract This research aims to find ways of making access to copyrighted books for the visually impaired as much a matter of choice as possible by moving the provision of access away from models based on charity and of building the provision of access into the mainstream. The work of third sector organisations providing access and attempts by the visually impaired community itself to enhance access are described. Realities effecting support workers in universities who have to help visually impaired students investigated. Legal disputes relating to copyright and anti-discrimination law are discussed. Developments in the ebooks market are monitored with a particular reference to attempts to build accessibility into devices like the Kindle and Apple products. The research also looks at how best to secure access to online bookshops, web pages offering ebooks for download in public libraries and ebook libraries in academia. The current level of access being achieved in this area is assessed. Next ongoing attempts to improve access and differing views on the advisability of an approach based on enforcement of the Worldwide Web Consortium’s accessibility guidelines or a more flexible approach emphasising user testing are discussed. Conclusions and recommendations: changes to copyright law and further development and clarification of anti-discrimination law as it applies to publishers are necessary.

They can be downloaded from many websites and their text can be displayed on a computer screen, on eBook readers and other mobile devices like smart phones. What is an audiobook? Audiobooks are recorded readings of books. They may be available on CDs and as downloadable files (MP3 or WMA format) that can be played on a computer or portable listening device like an iPod or MP3 player. Downloadable Library eBooks & Audiobooks and “DRM” The library has partnered with a company called OverDrive to make free downloadable eBooks and Audiobooks available to members of Halifax Public Libraries. They can be “checked out” for a limited time just like paper books but you’ll never get a fine because the books expire automatically when your loan period ends! They just stop working on your computer/device. Publishers can’t afford to give books away for free, so they protect their copyright by placing restrictions on the use and transfer of eBooks and Audiobooks. By adding “Digital Rights Management” (DRM) to the book, they prevent users from copying and saving the books in ways that would violate copyright laws. Because of the DRM on library eBooks and Audiobooks you will need special software installed on your computer to use them and they may not be compatible with all devices. Untersuchungszeitraum: Dezember 2012 – April 2013 ZHAW LSFM Potentialanalyse e-Unterlagen Mai 2013 Zusammenfassung Im Rahmen des Projektes Potentialanalyse e-Unterlagen wurde geprüft, ob Unterrichtsunterlagen in Papierform durch elektronische ersetzt werden können und ob sich Tablets zur Benutzung der elektronischen Unterlagen eignen. Für das Projekt sind die Rahmenbedingungen an der ZHAW LSFM berücksichtigt. Allgemeine Anforderungen sowie Anforderungen zum Erstellen und Benutzen von digitalen Unterlagen waren Grundlage für die Untersuchung. Es wurde evaluiert, über welche Formate (ePUB, HTML, PDF) und mit welcher Software die Anforderungen erfüllt werden könnten. Die Software wurde mit Dokumenten, die Elemente aus aktuellen Skripts enthielten, getestet. Elektronische Unterlagen sollen nicht nur auf Laptops, sondern auch auf Tablets benutzt werden können. Es wurden deshalb auch eReader für das iPad und ein Android-Tablet (Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1) getestet. Auch hier wurde darauf geachtet, inwieweit die Anforderungen an die Benutzung erfüllt werden.
