Install OverDrive Media Console for iPad/iPhone From your Device… 1. Go to the App Store. 2. Tap 'Search' and search for 'OverDrive Media Console'. 'OverDrive Media Console' is displayed in the search results. 3. Tap 'OverDrive Media Console'. The 'Info' screen is displayed. 4. Tap the 'Free' button. 5. Tap the 'Install' button. You are prompted to enter your Apple ID Password. 6. Enter your password and tap 'OK' OverDrive Media Console is installed. How do I activate OverDrive Media Console for iPad/iPhone? 1. A prompt will display the first time you download an eBook to OverDrive Media Console for iPhone/iPad. (See next page on how to download eBooks). 2. Enter your Adobe ID and password. If you do not have an Adobe ID… a. Select 'Register at Adobe.com'. b. Follow the instructions to sign up for an Adobe ID. c. In OverDrive Media Console, go to Get Books+ > eBook Settings > Authorize with Adobe ID. d. Enter the email address and password for your new Adobe account. 3. Select 'Authorize'. For mobile phones: To install the Live-brary App go to livebrary.boopsie.com to download the free App. 1. Go to www.Live-brary.com and click on Free Downloads. 2.) Click on Overdrive 3.) Search or browse for an E-book. You can use site search to search for a title author or subject. You can also click on a subject in the blue box. *From the left side under Format, click Adobe EPUB book, or Overdrive Audio Book if you want to listen to it. 4. Click available now to get a list of books that are available immediately and then click on Borrow. If the book is checked out you can put a hold on it and you will receive and email when it’s available. 5. Select your library from the drop down menu 6. After selecting your library, enter your barcode or username. The barcode is on the back of your library card and click Sign In. You may check the box to remember your login information. 7. After borrowing, click Go to Bookshelf. 8. After clicking go to bookshelf, other formats, then select EPUB eBook. You also have the option of reading directly from the browser you are using by clicking Read. 9. Click Confirm to finish the process. 10. The eBook will automatically download to Overdrive eReader. You can also click on the download button if you need to download it again. Other Tips From your Account page, you can view your Holds, Lists (Wish List, Rated titles, and Recommendations for you), and change your lending period(s) from the Settings page. Click the ribbon below a title to add or remove it from your Wish List. .

For the full text of this licence, please go to: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.5/ Access to books for the visually impaired: minimising charity and maximising choice Bradley Guy Whitehouse Abstract This research aims to find ways of making access to copyrighted books for the visually impaired as much a matter of choice as possible by moving the provision of access away from models based on charity and of building the provision of access into the mainstream. The work of third sector organisations providing access and attempts by the visually impaired community itself to enhance access are described. Realities effecting support workers in universities who have to help visually impaired students investigated. Legal disputes relating to copyright and anti-discrimination law are discussed. Developments in the ebooks market are monitored with a particular reference to attempts to build accessibility into devices like the Kindle and Apple products. The research also looks at how best to secure access to online bookshops, web pages offering ebooks for download in public libraries and ebook libraries in academia. The current level of access being achieved in this area is assessed. Next ongoing attempts to improve access and differing views on the advisability of an approach based on enforcement of the Worldwide Web Consortium’s accessibility guidelines or a more flexible approach emphasising user testing are discussed. Conclusions and recommendations: changes to copyright law and further development and clarification of anti-discrimination law as it applies to publishers are necessary.

eBooks & Audiobooks What is an eBook? eBooks are electronic versions of books. They can be downloaded from many websites and their text can be displayed on a computer screen, on eBook readers and other mobile devices like smart phones. What is an audiobook? Audiobooks are recorded readings of books. They may be available on CDs and as downloadable files (MP3 or WMA format) that can be played on a computer or portable listening device like an iPod or MP3 player. Downloadable Library eBooks & Audiobooks and “DRM” The library has partnered with a company called OverDrive to make free downloadable eBooks and Audiobooks available to members of Halifax Public Libraries. They can be “checked out” for a limited time just like paper books but you’ll never get a fine because the books expire automatically when your loan period ends! They just stop working on your computer/device. Publishers can’t afford to give books away for free, so they protect their copyright by placing restrictions on the use and transfer of eBooks and Audiobooks. By adding “Digital Rights Management” (DRM) to the book, they prevent users from copying and saving the books in ways that would violate copyright laws. Because of the DRM on library eBooks and Audiobooks you will need special software installed on your computer to use them and they may not be compatible with all devices.
