How to Check Out eBooks and eAudiobooks on Your Android Device using the Overdrive App* *Instructions may vary slightly depending on your specific device. Getting Started You will need a valid library card and access to the Google Play store. Installing the OverDrive Media Console App 1. Before you check out your first eBook or eAudiobook, you will need to install the free OverDrive Media Console App onto your Android Device. 2. Search the Google Play Store for OverDrive Media Console. 3. Once you find it, tap Download or Install to download the app. 4. Then tap Accept and Download. 5. Once the app has installed, tap to open OverDrive. 6. For eBooks, you will need to authorize the app with an Adobe ID. Getting an Adobe ID 1. When you first open the Overdrive app, you will be prompted to authorize your device. 2. If you have an Adobe ID, skip to Step 8. 3. To get an ID, tap the Get a Free Adobe ID button. This will open Adobe’s website. 4. Enter all required fields on the Create Adobe ID page. 5. Remember the email and password you used for your Adobe ID, you will need it again. 6. When finished, tap Create at the bottom of the page. 7. Return to the Overdrive Media Console app. 8. Tap the App Settings icon. 9. Enter the email address for your Adobe ID and your Adobe account Password. 10. Tap Authorize. Getting to the St. Charles City-County Library Overdrive Collection 1. Tap the Get Books icon or the Menu icon, then Get Books. 2. Tap Add Library. 3. Type in your zip code, and then tap Search. 4. Choose any St. Charles City-County Library location. 5. Tap the star next to that location’s name, to save the St. Charles City-County Library to your “Get Books” list. 6. Tap St. Charles City-County Library. 7. The mobile version of the St. Charles City-County Library Overdrive page is displayed. Signing into Your OverDrive Account 1. Before you can check out an eBook or eAudiobook, you must sign into your library website’s OverDrive account. To do this, tap the Account icon on our Overdrive mobile site. 2. The Remote Access Login page will display. Revised September 2013(AR) 3. Enter your Library card number and last name into the corresponding fields. 4. Tap the LogIn button. 5. Your Bookshelf will display. 6. Set your default lending periods under Settings in your account. For eBooks and eAudiobooks, you may select 7 or 14 days. Books automatically expire at the end of your lending period – no late fees. 7. Tap the Menu icon to browse the library’s eBook collection. Checking Out eBooks or eAudiobooks NOTE: eBooks show an open Book symbol on the cover. eAudiobooks show a headphones symbol. Black symbols mean the book is available. Grey symbols mean the book is checked out. 1. When you find a book of interest tap on the Book Cover. 2. A page will display with information on the book you selected. 3. Tap the Borrow button; this will automatically check out the book to you for the lending period previously selected. 4. If the Place a Hold button is displayed, all available copies are checked out. Tap Place a Hold to be notified via email when the book becomes available. 5. Once the title is checked out, you will be automatically directed to your bookshelf. If you have checked out the incorrect title, you may use the Return Title button only before you Download. 6. Tap the Download button for the title you would like to download. If multiple formats are available, a drop down menu will appear allowing you to choose your format. Choose the EPUB format for eBooks (you can use Kindle, but it requires downloading the Kindle App in addition to Overdrive.) Choose the MP3 format for eAudiobooks. 7. Select your format and tap Confirm & download. When finished downloading, a message will flash saying, “A book has been added to your bookshelf.” Tap the Overdrive symbol at the top left of the page and tap Bookshelf to see the books you have checked out. 8. Tap the title to open the book. 9. If you want to add another book, tap the Add a Book St. Charles City-County Library icon, which will take you back to the library district’s Overdrive webpage. Returning eBooks or eAudiobooks Early 1. In Bookshelf view, touch and hold the Book Cover (title). 2. Tap Return. 3. If you are sure you want to return the title, tap Yes. eBook Tips When reading the book, tap the middle of the page to bring up additional options: 1. Tap the Overdrive symbol in upper left corner to navigate back to your Bookshelf. 2. Tap the Navigation icon to navigate between chapters. 3. Tap the Settings icon to change Reader settings. 4.
