A NOTE FROM SIR

“In 1998, I went to with the goal of circumnavigating the globe in a hot air balloon. Whilst there, my parents found a beautiful and dreamed of turning it into a wonderful Moroccan retreat. Sadly, I didn’t quite manage to realise my goal on that occasion, however I did purchase that magnificent Kasbah and now my parents’ dream has become a reality. I am pleased to welcome you to Kasbah Tamadot, (Tamadot meaning soft breeze in Berber), which is perhaps one of the most beautiful properties in the high of Morocco. I hope you enjoy this magical place; I’m sure you too will fall in love with it.”

The Atlas Mountains

In the gorgeous surroundings of Kasbah Tamadot it’s easy to imagine that you’re a million miles away from it all. For many of the region’s inhabitants, however, it’s not so easy to get away, and we’re working to make sure the ’s activities contribute to the improvement of living conditions in the local area. The four villages nearest to Kasbah Tamadot are Asni, Asselda, Timzra, and Tansghart (that’s the one you can see across the valley from the outdoor infinity pool). Tansghart’s history can be traced back to the 12th century, when it was one of the oldest and most well-known Jewish villages surrounding Asni. Now Tansghart is composed of 100 families, most of which are Muslim. Its inhabitants make their living from farming but many residents have chosen to leave for the larger cities such as Casablanca or Rabat to find work. The Eve Branson Foundation workshop is located here, and the finished products are sold in the Berber Shop just behind the tennis courts on the road past Kasbah Tamadot. THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE STAFF AT KASBAH TAMADOT ARE BERBER, the name of the people indigenous to the area around the property. When Sir Richard Branson acquired Kasbah TAMADOT in 1998, it was decided to recruit locally rather than hiring pre-trained staff from Marrakech. While the property was being fully renovated, efforts began to teach some of the local villagers English as well as the skills necessary to work in a hotel. Many of the staff we hired had never even worked a formal job before!
