Principal’s Report:

Online Learning Transition to online learning was successful. Student attendance and achievement remained relatively high. Teachers transitioned seamlessly and maintained learning with scheduled synchronous zoom meetings as well as online assignments. The holidays provided time for everyone to rest and rejuvenate. I think I speak for all the staff when I say that we were very happy to have the students back in school. Two weeks of in- class learning will give us a chance to fill-in gaps, administer final unit assessments, and take advantage of school facilities to complete hands-on activities. If a student doesn’t get to the end in that time, we have three days to give students re-writes to get them to the finish line.

Final Exams As per the changes RVS made to final exams, the next two weeks will focus on extra in-class learning (and utilizing the amazing facilities we have here to benefit learning), filling in learning gaps, completing final unit assessments and major projects, and giving students additional opportunities to develop and demonstrate their understanding of curricular outcomes. There will be no cumulative final exams. January 25, 26, & 27 are now designated as days where students can access the following: • Opportunity for any student choosing to be reassessed on a curricular outcome or assignment (example: redoing a source analysis, rewriting a unit exam, etc.) • Targeted support mandatory for students struggling in classes or modules (i.e., less than 50% mark or incomplete or missing assignments) • Supporting students with specialized or exceptional needs • Providing support for students requiring emotional support

Outbreak Status Because there has been no school CoVid exposure in weeks, CHS was removed from Outbreak Status. We are starting again with a free slate. Community transmission is still high in Chestermere and the surrounding areas so we will continue to follo w AHS protocols every time we have a school community member test positive.

WARD TWO TRUSTEE REPORT January 2021

] RVS Board of Trustees Approves Amendments to Ward Boundaries

§ There were three changes to ward boundaries that required amendment. Those changes included: one minor correction from the previous bylaw passed in 2017; the annexation of the lands which will eventually house the next high school in Cochrane; and two changes to Board of Education’s service area. § In order for the ward boundaries to be updated, reflecting these changes, a bylaw was needed to be passed before Dec. 31, 2020 and forwarded onto the Minister for consideration. § The Board of Trustees gave three readings to bylaw 2020-1 which, subject to ministerial approval, will amend the ward boundaries. Bylaw Amended for 10 Elector Signatures

§ The Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) was amended on Sept. 1, 2020. One of the changes to the LAEA was to allow a school division the ability to adjust the number of electoral signatures, required as part of the nomination package, provided they met the population eligibility requirement. § The Board indicated support for updating the number of elector signatures required. To apply for the 2021 election, this bylaw needed to be passed before Dec. 31, 2020. § The Board of Trustees gave three readings to bylaw 2020-2 which will amend the number of elector signatures required for trustee candidates from five to 10. Appointments Approved for Returning Officer(s) for 2021 Election

§ Given the required election tasks and staffing constraints, the Board approved the appointment of Michelle Groff as the Returning Officer, and Steve Thomas (Director of Finance) as the Substitute Returning Officer, for the 2021 Election.

RVS Board of Trustees Update on At-Home Learning

§ As required by the Government of , all Grade 7 to 12 students moved to at-home learning effective Nov. 30, with all grades learning at home for one week after the winter break. § Following government’s announcement in November, RVS informed staff and families of the change and provided information specific to the two grade groups. Parent and student guides were produced and distributed with information about what to expect and how they would be supported during at- home online learning. Guides were also provided to school administrators and teachers to assist them in developing their at-home online learning plans. Preparations Underway for Students Changing to In-person/Online Learning

§ For the 2020/21 school year, families chose either in-person or RVS Online Learning for students, with the opportunity to switch learning modes for the second half of the year. § The high school selection process took place Dec. 8 to 14, 2020, and is now complete. Just over half of families contacted RVS, with most choosing to stay with their current mode. Anyone not heard from will remain with their current learning mode. There will not be another opportunity to switch modes. Based on selections, RVS anticipates its high school online population will increase from 700 to 950 students. § The selection period for Grades 1 to 8/9 will run from Jan. 11 to 15.

Respectfully Submitted,

Patty Sproule Trustee – Ward 2 403-936-2385 [email protected]
