Celebrity Cinema and Hallyu 2.0 Ng Shu Min Chrystal, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Liew Kai Khiun, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore The Asian Conference on Media & Mass Communication 2015 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract Through their realist cinematic portrayals of the traumatic evolution of Korean socio- political landscapes, Korean directors such as Im Kwon-Taek are synonymous with Korean national Cinema. These directors have raised the country’s cultural profile internationally through the film festival circuit. However, with the phenomenal global reach of the “Korean Wave” or Hallyu, film is no longer a singular projection of the image of South Korea. Today, television dramas have overtaken films, flooding television and small mobile screens with attractive faces of Korean celebrities. While several studies have made references to key Korean celebrities, namely Lee Young Ae, Rain and Gianna Jun, there have been fewer efforts to trace these celebrities’ trajectories within films and other platforms. This paper will explore how cinema within the Korean Wave phenomenon contributes to the ecology of the Korean Wave and the roles these celebrities play within this eco system. • Torn: the Story of a Lithuanian Migrant
Torn: the story of a Lithuanian migrant By Grazina Pranauskas MA, Faculty of Arts, Deakin University, Geelong. BA (Hons), Faculty of Arts, Deakin University, Geelong. BA, Major Studies in Journalism Studies and Literary Studies, Faculty of Arts, Deakin University, Geelong. BMus. in Choral Conducting, Conservatorium of Music, Vilnius, Lithuania. Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy, College of Arts, Victoria University, Melbourne, 24 November 2014. Abstract This doctorate consists of two parts: a novel Torn and the exegesis: Writing the migrant story: nostalgia, identity and belonging. The novel and theoretical exegesis are intended to complement each other in capturing the 20th century Lithuanian historical and political circumstances that led to Lithuanian emigration to Australia. In my novel and exegesis, my intention has been to explore how the experiences of Lithuanian refugees and migrants differ, especially in relation to nostalgia, identity and belonging, depending on the time and circumstances of their arrival in Australia. Lithuanians came to Australia from the same place geographically, but from a different place in terms of history and politics. My novel is a creative representation of the Lithuanian migrants’ experience in the diaspora. It is set in the 1980s and 90s when the political, socio-economic and cultural environment radically shifted under Mikhail Gorbachev’s policy of perestroika (restructure). Daina, a theatre producer from Soviet Lithuania, comes to Australia to look after her great-uncle, Algis. As a postwar Lithuanian refugee, settled here since the 1940s, Algis has strong views about his Soviet-occupied homeland and its people. He lets Daina know that he hates anything associated with Russia and Russians who, in his opinion, were responsible for killings and deportations of Lithuanians during the war.

  • “Ghosts Within Us”: a Study of Women Writers of Gothic Modernism By
“Ghosts Within Us”: A Study of Women Writers of Gothic Modernism By Nihad Laouar Canterbury Christ Church University Thesis submitted For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2019 i ii Acknowledgments I would like to thank my first supervisor, Dr Andrew Humphries, for his unfailing help and support throughout this project. His hard work, patience, enthusiasm, guidance and encouragement are what have made this project possible. I would also like to thank my second supervisor Prof. Carolyn Oulton for her support, unstinting encouragement, and continued belief in my project. My thanks also go to all my family, friends and colleagues who have supported me in this project and who patiently have listened to my endless talks about the Gothic. Finally, I would like to extend my thanks to the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for their funding that enabled me carry out this research in Modernist and Gothic literature. i 1 Abstract This thesis offers a reading of Modernist narratives by British women writers through Gothic lens. The ostensible archaic mode of the Gothic that Modernism endeavoured to throw away returns from the repressed to haunt Modernist fiction. Women writers that this thesis examines, show the importance of this writing mode. Through its elastic elements, the Gothic continues to live in the early twentieth century. This thesis shows how women writers adapt Gothic tropes to engage with their own and their age’s anxieties between the fin de siècle and the 1930s. This study shows how the Gothic communicates historical and gender concerns from women’s perspective with the aim to establish a women’s voice within the field of Gothic Modernism.

THE YANKEE FIGURE IN EARLY AMERICAN. THEATRE PRIOR TO 1820 Charles â\ Schultzs A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of Bowling Green State University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August, 1970 BOWMGGREENSTAft I © 1971 CHARLES ALBERT SCHULTZ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to trace the development of the Yankee figure In American drama prior to 1820 to determine if his character served as a prototype for the pop ular stage Yankee specialists of the l820’s-40's. Six early American plays, the only one's extant, containing the Yankee figure were analyzed: The Contrast. The Politician Out-Wltted. Tears and Smiles. Fashionable Follies. Love and Friendship, and The Yankey in England. Early non-dramatic forms, both European and American were examined, as well as the acting of the Yankee character before 1820. The Yankees in the six early scripts demonstrated general characteristics which were definitely similar to those developed by the later Yankee specialists. Apparently, the early stage Yankee figure was influenced in its develop ment by similar comic types created by American as well as European authors. Although the early Yankee actors followed to a degree the elevated acting style of foreign predecessors, they employed a somewhat more natural acting style. Without doubt, the early Yankee actors were inspirational instigators of a development in American comedy identified with a strong native realistic style, and they provided a variety of models on which the Yankee specialists of the l820's-40's could draw.
