Conservation Areas: Sensitive environmental features, scenic landscapes and cultural resources that are only meant for very limited or no development. Places: Areas targeted for development. 1. Airport-Industry: Located in close proximity to Pittsburgh International Airport, and mainly include sites that have been targeted by the County and developers for office and light industrial development. 2. The Core: Located in downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland. Much new development in Core Places will be infill development, rehabilitation and reuse of existing buildings, and adaptive reuse of former industrial or warehouse sites and structures. 3. Corridors: Have good access to major transportation corridors and highway interchanges. They are relatively intense, mixed-use hubs of office, industrial, commercial and residential uses. Corridor Places can accommodate high-intensity land uses that require large amounts of land such as regional shopping centers, industrial parks, and business parks. 4. Urban Neighborhoods: Located within urban areas like the cities of Pittsburgh and McKeesport. They build on existing business districts and mixed-used areas in older, densely developed neighborhoods, and include more regionally-oriented services with a mix of housing types in a walkable setting. 5. Community Downtowns: Similar in character to Urban Neighborhoods, but are less densely developed. Most, but not all, Community Downtowns build on the existing business districts and downtowns in older communities. 6. Villages: Located in suburban communities throughout the County. Village Places are characterized by a mix of residences and small-scale, low-intensity businesses and services that primarily serve neighborhood needs. Non-residential development should neither generate, nor depend on, large volumes of vehicular traffic. 7. Rural Places: Located along the “edges” of the County in municipalities that are less developed. Rural Places are the least densely developed of all the types of Places. They will be primarily residential in nature, with a focus on single-family detached housing. Non-residential development will be limited mainly to recreation and essential supporting services. 8. Transit-Oriented Developments (TODs): A mix of relatively dense residential, office and retail uses at transit stations or transit stops, to maximize pedestrian access to transit. TOD is an overlay on selected Places that are located along the existing ‘T’ line and busways, and on proposed new transit lines.     The Airports & ACAA Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA) oversees and maintains Pittsburgh International Airport and Allegheny County Airport. Pittsburgh International Airport Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is in Findlay and Moon townships in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, about 20 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh. It is the second-busiest airport in Pennsylvania, after Philadelphia International Airport, serving nearly 9 million passengers in 2017. To manage growing passenger traffic, construction began on the original Greater Pittsburgh International Airport in 1946 and opened in 1952. Over time, as passenger traffic further increased, services were expanded both domestically and internationally. Allegheny County and ACAA undertook a major, nearly billion-dollar airport expansion in 1987. The new Pittsburgh International Airport opened in 1992 and has been ranked highly by travelers and industry journals. In January 2018, Air Transport World magazine named PIT its 2017 Airport of the Year, placing the airport in prestigious company alongside past winners Hong Kong International, London Heathrow and Singapore Changi. In 1853 Jones merged his operations with the South Side’s American Iron Works, which was co-owned by the brothers Bernard and John Lauth. This resulted in the formation of the Jones and Lauth Company. When the Lauth brothers sold the corporation to a banker named James Laughlin in 1863, the company took the name Jones and Laughlin Company. In 1887 a bridge connecting the north and south shores of the Monongahela River was constructed to transport the hot pig iron manufactured on the northern shore to the processing facility in the south. This bridge known as the Hot Metal Bridge has been renovated for vehicular traffic presently. J&L was, by far, the major competitor to the Carnegie Steel, the top steel producer at the time.

U.S.DOT BUILD Grant: Butler County - State Route 228 Improvements The U.S. Department of Transportation has recently awarded $25 million of discretionary BUILD grant funding to Butler County to construct roadway, intersection, and pedestrian improvements along two segments of State Route 228 and State Route 3020 (Freedom Road). The region’s TIP and Long Range Plan need to be amended, and the region’s air quality conformity assessment needs to be updated before the project can begin construction. SPC is seeking public feedback as part of the amendment process. The project includes improvements on Freedom Road from Powell Road to Haine School Road, and on State Route 228 at the intersection with Three Degree Road. Various improvements include adding new travel lanes, widening existing lanes, adding turn lanes, converting intersections to roundabouts or jug handles, installing ADA ramps, adding multi-use paths and sidewalks, upgrading traffic signals, and adding pavement markings.     FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 5, 2018 PennDOT Announces 2018 Allegheny County Highway and Bridge Improvement Projects Pittsburgh, PA – PennDOT is pleased to announce the 2018 Allegheny County transportation improvement project list for state-owned roads and bridges. District 11 will invest an estimated $208 million on 68 projects to improve, preserve or rehabilitate transportation infrastructure including 42 bridges (37 structurally deficient) in Allegheny County in 2018. Additionally, 102 miles of roadway will be paved or resurfaced and more than $21 million will be invested in tunnel maintenance and improvements. Approximately 59 projects will be bid this year valued at an estimated $171 million. “After a challenging winter, Construction season is underway and PennDOT is excited to announce the schedule of new projects starting in 2018,” said District Executive Cheryl Moon- Sirianni. “Additionally, major roadway, bridge and tunnel projects continue this year as PennDOT makes significant investments to our regional infrastructure.” Here’s a preview of the improvements scheduled for 2018 in Allegheny County: Projects continuing from 2017 with minor work remaining I-376 Fort Pitt Tunnel Ceiling Removal Only minor work to complete a fire suppression system remains in 2018 in the outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel on this $14.51 million project in the City of Pittsburgh. Completed work on the project includes tunnel ceiling removal, concrete repairs to the tunnel walls, waterline and standpipe improvements, electrical updates, drainage upgrades, and reroofing of the north portal building. I-376 – Beaver County to Pittsburgh Airport Resurfacing on the Clinton Bridge and a portion of I-376 at the Beaver County line remains on this $66.34 million project.

By offering a multitude of options for decision-makers, the report can serve as a tool for guiding change in the Strip District. Following is a summary of the major findings presented in Guiding Change in the Strip: • The Strip has a small residential population. As of 2000, the population was on 266 residents. Of these residents, there is a significant income gap: There are no residents earning between $25,000 and $35,000 annually. In other words, there are a limited amount of middle-income residents. Furthermore, nearly three-quarters of the 58 families living in the Strip earned less than $25,000 in 1999. These figures represent a segment of the residential population with limited voice in the development of the Strip. There is an opportunity for NITS, in collaboration with the City of Pittsburgh, to increase the presence of these residents in the future of the Strip.
