The gentile prophet Bilam is hired by King Balak of Moav to curse Bnai Yisrael. Bilam travels on his donkey to Moav and on the way the donkey smashes Bilam’s foot as a sign of his folly. But why the foot and not any other body part? Perhaps the reason is based on the teaching of Falsehood has no feet” which means that lies“שקר אין לה רגלים - Chazal cannot stand up for long because truth will ultimately prevail. Bilam personified falsehood. His arrogant attitude, lust for money and honor blinded him into thinking he could even fool Hashem. But it was all שקר- - based on falsehood and falsehood cannot stand. This is illustrated with the letters of the word “falsehood” whose letters cannot stand on their own, because they are grounded by only one point and whose letters are firmly groundedאמת – ”quickly topple over. This is in stark contrast to the word for “truth by two points! In the end Bilam was the conduit to pronounce eternal blessings upon Bnai Yisrael. May we always stand firmly with truth and be the recipients of Hashem’s bountiful blessings. Fully vaccinated people are defined as being at least two weeks after receiving the final vaccine dose required. Fully vaccinated immunocompromised members should consult their physicians to make certain they can participate in the currently approved activities. Our guidelines are: Attendees who are fully vaccinated, whether members or guests, no longer need to wear masks in the Shul. However, guests must have vaccination cards and photo IDs with them to be seated in the main section of the Shul. 1. Fully vaccinated Rabbonim and/or lay speakers will be giving shiurim without masks at reasonable distances from their audience. 2. Balei Tefila and Balei Korei no longer are required to be masked. However, if someone receives an Aliyah and wants the Bal Korei to wear a mask during that Aliyah, they will accommodate. 3. Aliyahs will continue to be given only to those fully vaccinated. 4. Those men not vaccinated, whether members or guests, will continue to be required to sit in rear, small social hall section. A similar separate section is made available for non-vaccinated women attendees. In both cases, such attendees must be fully masked. 5. All guests who are not vaccinated, must pre-register for attendance. The guests must contact Steven Schoenfeld directly, by e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at (917) 741-0299, no later than 48 hours prior to date of attendance. 6. Children under the age of 10 are not permitted in Shul at this time. We thank you, as always, for your continued support and cooperation. We look forward to implementing additional steps toward normalcy as they are deemed prudent for our congregation. Family History Her father was the famous Rabbi Hanina ben Teradyon, the Talmud speaks of Bruriah standing next to her father as he is being slowly burnt to death by the Romans because he had violated the Roman ban on the study or teaching of the Torah in public places. Her father's death was a dramatic public affair. He was wrapped in the Torah scroll which was set afire but the Roman soldiers applied water soaked wool over his heart so as to keep him alive as long as possible. It was reported that his attitude was heroic and that even the executioner was moved by it. The executioner is said to have called out to the Rabbi asking that if he stopped the wet wool sponges, would the Rabbi assure him of entry into the World to Come. Hanina ben Teradyon gave him the assurance and the executioner took away the wool sponges and raised the flame. After the death of Hainin ben Terdyou, the executioner jumped into the flames and died also. Bruriah is one of the few women mentioned in the Gemara.   • Beruriah and Rachel: Two Women in the Talmud
    1 BERURIAH AND RACHEL: TWO WOMEN IN THE TALMUD BERURIAH It is not very often that we find the name of a woman mentioned in the Talmud. Beruriah was one such exception, a great Jewish woman whose wisdom, piety, and learning inspire us to this day. Beruriah lived about one hundred years after the destruction of the Second Temple, which occurred in the year 70 CE. She was the daughter of the great Rabbi Chananiah ben Teradion, who was one of the "Ten Martyrs" whom the Romans killed for spreading the teachings of the Torah among the Jewish people. Beruriah was not only the daughter of a great man but was also the wife of an equally great sage, the saintly Rabbi Meir, one of the most important teachers of the Mishnah. The Talmud tells us many stories about Beruriah. She studied three hundred matters pertaining to Halachah (Jewish law) every day, which would be quite an amazing feat for any scholar. Thus, the Sages frequently asked her views regarding matters of law, especially those laws which applied to women. For instance, the Sages had different opinions about the law of purity and asked Beruriah for her opinion. Rabbi Judah sided with her and recognized her authority. There was another case where there was a dispute between Beruriah and her brother. One of the greatest authorities was asked to judge the case and he said: "Rabbi Chananiah's daughter Beruriah is a greater scholar than his son." Beruriah was very well versed in the Holy Scriptures and could quote from them with ease.
