eSharp Issue 20: New Horizons A Fresh Perspective on the History of Hasidic Judaism Eva van Loenen (University of Southampton) Introduction In this article, I shall examine the history of Hasidic Judaism, a mystical,1 ultra-orthodox2 branch of Judaism, which values joyfully worshipping God’s presence in nature as highly as the strict observance of the laws of Torah3 and Talmud.4 In spite of being understudied, the history of Hasidic Judaism has divided historians until today. Indeed, Hasidic Jewish history is not one monolithic, clear-cut, straightforward chronicle. Rather, each scholar has created his own narrative and each one is as different as its author. While a brief introduction such as this cannot enter into all the myriad divergences and similarities between these stories, what I will attempt to do here is to incorporate and compare an array of different views in order to summarise the history of Hasidism and provide a more objective analysis, which has not yet been undertaken. Furthermore, my historical introduction in Hasidic Judaism will exemplify how mystical branches of mainstream religions might develop and shed light on an under-researched division of Judaism. The main focus of 1 Mystical movements strive for a personal experience of God or of his presence and values intuitive, spiritual insight or revelationary knowledge. The knowledge gained is generally ‘esoteric’ (‘within’ or hidden), leading to the term ‘esotericism’ as opposed to exoteric, based on the external reality which can be attested by anyone. 2 Ultra-orthodox Jews adhere most strictly to Jewish law as the holy word of God, delivered perfectly and completely to Moses on Mount Sinai. -

Paying special attention to the discursive forms of the Talmud, I show how juxtapositions of narrative and legal dialectics cooperate in generating the Talmud's distinctive ethics, which I characterize as an attentiveness to the “exceptional particulars” of life. To demonstrate the features and rewards of a literary approach, I offer a sustained reading of a single tractate from the Babylonian Talmud, ʿAvoda Zara (AZ). AZ and other talmudic discussions about non-Jews offer a rich resource for considerations of ethics because they are centrally concerned with constituting social relationships and with examining aspects of human experience that exceed the domain of Jewish law. AZ investigates what distinguishes Jews from non-Jews, what Jews and non- Jews share in common, and what it means to be a human being. I read AZ as a cohesive literary work unified by the overarching project of examining the place of humanity in the cosmos. -
For Shabbat Morning Prayers. As I Explain On
Here is an abridged Matbeah – service – for Shabbat morning prayers. As I explain on our homepage, while most of this abridged service is designed as if one is davening – praying – alone, I have included the recitation of Mourner’s Kaddish for those who are in mourning or observing Yahrzeit. Ideally, all of us will begin praying at 9:30am on Shabbat morning with a kavannah – intentionality – towards one another. In this way, we will form a community even if we are not standing together in the sanctuary. All of the pages on this outline refer to our Sim Shalom prayer book; however, all of these prayers appear in most traditional prayer books. Chapter Fourteen Rabbinic and Other Judaisms, from 70 to ca. 250 The war of 66-70 was as much a turning point for Judaism as it was for Christianity. In the aftermath of the war and the destruction of the Jerusalem temple Judaeans went in several religious directions. In the long run, the most significant by far was the movement toward rabbinic Judaism, on which the source-material is vast but narrow and of dubious reliability. Other than the Mishnah, Tosefta and three midrashim, almost all rabbinic sources were written no earlier than the fifth century (and many of them much later), long after the events discussed in this chapter. Our information on non-rabbinic Judaism in the centuries immediately following the destruction of the temple is scanty: here we must depend especially on archaeology, because textual traditions are almost totally lacking. This is especially regrettable when we recognize that two non-rabbinic traditions of Judaism were very widespread at the time. Through at least the fourth century the Hellenistic Diaspora and the non-rabbinic Aramaic Diaspora each seem to have included several million Judaeans. Also of interest, although they were a tiny community, are Jewish Gnostics of the late first and second centuries. The end of the Jerusalem temple meant also the end of the Sadducees, for whom the worship of Adonai had been limited to sacrifices at the temple. The great crowds of pilgrims who traditionally came to the city for the feasts of Passover, Weeks and Tabernacles were no longer to be seen, and the temple tax from the Diaspora that had previously poured into Jerusalem was now diverted to the temple of Jupiter Capitolinus in Rome. -

My Internet connection went out on Thursday afternoon. Bill Landau uploaded what I had completed by Thursday afternoon. My Internet has been working again since 4 p.m. on Friday, so I am fortunate to post late – but still before Shabbas. Of all the pairings of parshot that we occasionally encounter, Chukat and Balak to me seem the most thematically challenging to consider together. Chukat opens with Parah Adumah, the procedure of regaining ritual purity after contact with a dead body. This chapter follows logically after Shelach and Korach, when many thousands of Jews died (and therefore those who cared for the deceased became ritually impure). After Parah Adumah, the discussion of the generation of the Exodus ceases, and the Torah picks up immediately 38 years later, with the events of the generation that Yeshoshua led into the land. These events include the death of Miriam and Aharon and the events that caused God to tell Moshe and Aharon that their period of leadership was over, that Yehoshua and Elazar would replace them. -

176 FROM TEXT TO TRADITION in this period was virtually unfettered. The latter restriction seems to have been often compromised. Under the Severan dynasty (193-225 C.E.) Jewish fortunes improved with the granting of a variety of legal privileges culminating in full Roman citizenship for Jews. The enjoyment of these privileges and the peace which Jewry enjoyed in the Roman Empire were·· interrupted only by the invasions by the barbarians in the West 10 and the instability and economic decline they caused throughout the empire, and by the Parthian incursions against Roman Mishnah: The New Scripture territories in the East. The latter years of Roman rule, in the aftermath of the Bar Kokhba Revolt and on the verge of the Christianization of the empire, were extremely fertile ones for the development of . The period beginning with the destruction (or rather, with the Judaism. It was in this period that tannaitic Judaism came to its restoration in approximately 80 C.E.) saw a fundamental change final stages, and that the work of gathering its intellectual in Jewish study and learning. God tells Moses:] And say to the people... you shall eat meat. You shall not eat it for one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days; but for a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and you become disgusted by it. [Numbers 11:18-20] 2-This, too, shall happen to you! The most dreaded Torah portion is Ki Tavo, where God lists all the curses that will befall those who do not follow His commandments: But it shall come to pass, if you will not listen to the voice of the Lord your God, to take care to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command you this day, that all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you. [Deut. 28:15] Follows a long string of dreaded curses, beginning with: Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field… [Deut. 28:16] And ending with: Also, every illness and every plague, that is not written in this Book of the Torah, the Lord will bring it upon you, until you are destroyed. Beit Shammai & Beit Hillel: Two Fundamentally Different Approaches to Chanukah Rabbi Joshua Flug Director of Torah Research, Yeshiva University’s Center for the Jewish Future One of the more famous disputes between Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel is regarding the practice of the extremely scrupulous (mehadrin min hamehadrin) on Chanukah. מצות חנוכה נר איש וביתו Our Rabbis taught: The precept of Chanukah [demands] one light for a והמהדרין נר לכל אחד ואחד man and his household; the scrupulous [kindle] a light for each member [of והמהדרין מן המהדרין בית שמאי :the household]; and the extremely scrupulous, — Beit Shammai maintain אומרים יום ראשון מדליק שמנה On the first day eight lights are lit and thereafter they are gradually מכאן ואילך פוחת והולך ובית הלל reduced; but Beit Hillel say: On the first day one is lit and thereafter they אומרים יום ראשון מדליק אחת are progressively increased. Ulla said: In the West [Palestine] two מכאן ואילך מוסיף והולך אמר amoraim, R. Yosi b. Avin and R. Yosi b. Zevida, differ therein: one עולא פליגי בה תרי אמוראי במערבא ר' יוסי בר אבין ור' יוסי maintains, the reason of Beit Shammai is that it shall correspond to the בר זבידא חד אמר טעמא דב"ש days still to come, and that of Beit Hillel is that it shall correspond to the כנגד ימים הנכנסין וטעמא דב"ה days that are gone; but another maintains: Beit Shammai's reason is that it כנגד ימים היוצאין וחד אמר טעמא shall correspond to the bulls of the Festival and Beit Hillel's reason is that דב"ש כנגד פרי החג וטעמא דבית .we promote in [matters of] sanctity but do not reduce הלל דמעלין בקדש ואין מורידין. -

(Tanhuma, Va-ethanan 3) This midrash highlights the multidimensional nature of the Prayer and names a variety of expressive means alongside the Prayer's verbal aspect. It is this book's aim to portray the nonverbal components of the Prayer - physical gestures, attire, and vocality - and to demonstrate their impor- tance for, and integrality to, the prayer-act.
