The novel Allemagne, conte cruel by the Bulgarian musician and writer Viktor Paskov is partially based on his personal experiences in the distant 1968 when he was a “gastarbeiter” in the GDR after the Warsaw Pact troops invaded Czecho- slovakia. A time of repression to which one had to adapt. The atmosphere in the inn sheltering the characters is cruel, ugly and inconsolable reflecting the interpersonal relationships of its lonely and miserable tenants who are unable to make their dreams come true. The role of Stasi and the German United Socialist Party as well as some negative features of the two nations are disclosed in a situation where there is no room left for human dignity and integration. Although written 25 years ago, the novel sounds up-to- date and sensitive. Unlike the other of Paskov`s works, this novel is the only one untranslated into German. I am also grateful for the assistance of the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the UCL Old Students‘ Association. 3 Postcolonial Literature in Polish Translation (1970–2010): Difference, Similarity and Solidarity The thesis examines the Polish translation and reception of postcolonial literature between 1970 and 2010. It investigates the perceptions of postcolonial peoples and Polish self-perceptions in the context of timely debates about East European postcoloniality and, generally, contemporary global synergies and solidarities. The Introduction presents contemporary conceptualizations of solidarity. Chapter One provides a historical background and discusses the scholarship on Polish postcoloniality, while Chapter Two explains the methodological approach – analysing relevant discourses in nearly one thousand reviews of postcolonial prose – and characterizes the Polish translations of postcolonial literature (1945–2010). Chapters Three and Four explore the discourses on translation and knowledge: they demonstrate that translation is expected to facilitate understanding of foreign cultures through linguistic clarity and informative material, and that postcolonial texts are read as sources of knowledge (especially before 1989) and as valid, if competing, representations of socio-cultural realities. Chapter Five investigates Eurocentric discourses of difference, which stigmatize postcolonial irrationality (mostly pre-1989), barbarity (mostly post-1989) and exoticism. Discourses of universalism are featured in Chapter Six, which documents continuing references to similarity – common humanity, communist future, global modernity – and shows them to be compromised by the perceptions of others as less developed. -

Dobreva, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2011 This project uncovers the role of recent German-Balkan works in articulating transnational identity in and through literature. Drawing on social and political models of European identity representations as well as on studies on stigma, trauma, and diasporic cultures as distinct historical formations, I contend that migrant fictions from Eastern Europe and the Balkans not only illuminate the concepts and demarcations operative in European collective imaginations but also introduce an Eastern European/Balkan dimension regarding the formation of modern identities beyond a national focus. To investigate this process, I focus on three Eastern European expatriates: the Bulgarian-born German and Austrian writers Rumjana Zacharieva and Dimitre Dinev and the Russian-German Wladimir Kaminer.
