The intimate politics of the Cape Floral Kingdom Book Review The inTimaTe poliTics of The cape floral Kingdom Book Title: The production of scientific knowledge about the Cape Floral Kingdom is, today, the exclusive preserve T.P. Stokoe: The man, the of professional botanical scientists, and the legions of amateur botanists, loosely organised in the myths, the flowers branches of the Botanical Society nationwide, now labour under their direct command. However, this was not always the case. Little more than a century ago the roles were reversed: local study of the Cape Book Cover: Floral Kingdom was the exclusive pursuit of wealthy amateurs, one of whom, Cape Town stockbroker Harry Bolus, endowed the first chair in botany at the University of Cape Town (then the South African College) in 1902. His private herbarium of more than 30 000 specimens followed a decade later, together with a further bequest of £27 000.00 for its upkeep. Scientific botany thus took up residence at the Cape as the handmaiden of amateur botany: as groundsmen tending its public gardens, nurserymen dispensing seed and cultivation advice for its private gardens and gamekeepers enclosing the floral commons against the depredations of the underclass. Professional botany’s scientific enquiry was similarly shaped by its amateur patron’s preoccupations. Alongside taxonomy – the staple of 19th century botany throughout the British Empire – permanent residence lent Cape Town’s amateur botanists a particular preoccupation with ‘plant geography’ – the division of the subcontinent into ‘floristic’ regions on the basis of plant distribution. They were encouraged and assisted in this by the colonial state’s construction of railways and creation of forest conservancies, which opened up Cape Town’s hinterland, particularly the mountains, to recreational Authors: exploration by the urban middle class. -

It is arguably the most magnificent setting at the foot of Table Mountain and Devils peak. The concept of the South African College was first formed in 1791 when the Dutch Commissioner-General, Jacob Abraham Uitenhage de Mist, asked for funding to be set aside to improve schooling in the Cape. After the British took over control of the Cape Colony its first governor, Lord Charles Henry Somerset PC, gave permission for the funds reserved by de Mist to be used to establish the South African College in 1814. It was decided in 1874 that the younger students should be separated from their older counterparts. The South African College was separated into the College which became the University of Cape Town and the College School. The College School moved to its own building on Orange Street, separate from the College, in 1896. For the next few decades, the school grew and the building became too small for the number of students attending. In 1959 the school moved to its current home in the Montebello Estate in Newlands,] former home of the mining magnate Sir Max Michaelis, after a decade-long negotiation with the Cape Administration. WHAT PEOPLE TREASURE & WHAT THEY FEAR. - ARUNDHATI ROY ON 26 MARCH 2020 SOUTH AFRICA WENT INTO LOCKDOWN, JOINING MANY OTHER COUNTRIES IN A GLOBAL LIMITATION RESPONSE TO THE RAPID SPREAD OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. As with other pandemics, the South African response highlighted the political, social and economic faults in our country - particularly the race, class and gender inequalities that persist. As Arundhati Roy stated, “whenever crises visit a given community, the fundamental reality of that community is laid bare. Who has more and who has less. Where the power lies. What people treasure and what they fear.” But it is also crises that show us the resilience of everyday people, and there are many. During this time, Tekano sought out opportunities to support the efforts of resilience through our Fellows who work with disadvantaged and marginalised communities. We did this to strengthen our role which is to provide support that develops leadership for health equity. We wanted to provide support in the face of this pandemic, strengthening the work and amplifying the voices of Fellows and the communities they were supporting. On 15 April 2020 Tekano published a call for Fellows to submit proposals for collaborative social change initiatives. Our criteria for determining support for these COVID-19 initiatives included: • They must advance social change within the broad agenda for health equity. • They must highlight and support the plight of vulnerable and marginalised communities. -

The major part of the Collection consists of botanical correspondence from South African botanists and from others all over the world to Harry Bolus and his niece H M L Bolus, and to the Bolus Herbarium at the University of Cape Town, after it was established there. There is also a large section of botanist's lists, registers and collecting diaries. Biographical information on Bolus Herbarium staff members and details of salary scales, work records, diaries etc are in Section B. Most of the staff biographies were compiled by Mrs M R Levyns. Harry Bolus's Herbarium Library Catalogue 1865-1911 is also in this section. Photographs of the Bolus family and their home 'Sherwood' in Kenilworth, and of many of the botanists, whose correspondence and plant lists are in the collection, are in Section F. University UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN “Growing together”: exploring the politics of knowing and conserving (bio) diversity in a small conservancy in Cape Town Town Elsemi Olwage OLWELS001Cape of Department of Social Anthropology Minor Dissertation Supervisor:University Prof. Andrew Spiegel 11 February 2013 Abstract This dissertation is based on research conducted at a small state-managed conservancy called the Edith Stephens Nature Reserve (ESNR) situated in the low-lying flatlands of the Cape Town metropolis. By tracing some of the complex and varied ways in which different ways of knowing and valuing urban “natures” and practices of conservation co-constitute each other, this dissertation critically engages with the social power relations at work in the continual making and unmaking of Cape Town’s “natural” heritages. In doing so, I argue for recognizing the ways in which Cape Town’s urban “natures” remain entangled with the epistemological, ecological and spatial legacies of colonialism and apartheid. Moreover, by focusing on the ESNR, I explore the current material and discursive practices by the state in relation to urban “nature” conservation. In recent years, the discursive framework of biodiversity conservation was mapped onto ESNR through the Townstate apparatus. At the same time, ESNR was identified as pilot site for an experimental partnership project that was called Cape Flats Nature (CFN), a project that ran from 2002 till 2010 which explored what biodiversity conservation would mean within marginalized,Cape poverty-stricken and highly unequal urban landscapes. -
