0 ORIENTATION

This submission covers the research output that comes from the three faculties, viz. the Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Sciences, Health and Agriculture, and Faculty of Management Sciences and Law, during the 2004 academic year. The format that has been followed in this submission includes, as per faculty per school, record of individual lecturer’s contributions into research, publications (i.e. SAPSE and non-SAPSE accredited publications, refereed papers, book reviews, chapters in books, and books) presentations of academic papers and posters at different conferences, seminars and workshops, linkages/collaborations, membership of executive committees of academic associations, professional bodies and community outreach

Kgosimore DL Continued to serve on the Criminology and Criminal Justice Standards Generating Body (SGB) of the South African Qualifications Authority’s (SAQA) National Standards Body (NSB) 08. This SGB was able to have a four-year BA degree in Criminology registered with SAQA in 2004 and also completed unit standards for the MA and Ph.D. degrees. Moolman CJ Member of a team that has been tasked with developing an undergraduate program for the Police Services (SAP.S.). This is collaboration between SAP.S. and universities. Six meetings were attended in Pretoria during the 2004 academic year.

Dseagu S Has been in collaboration with a University of Venda Science and Technology academic staff member and a KwaZulu-Natal Technology academic staff member in connection with the research project, ‘Oral narratives collection in Limpopo’.

Gottwald SR and Schulze MM Two interns from Kehl worked in the Training and Development section of the University of the North for two months. They attended German lectures whenever possible and have since assisted one of the students of German financially. They also donated toys to a crèche of which Ms Schulze is patroness.

Gottwald SR and Schulze MM The student exchange programme between the University of the North and the Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal took place for the eighth year running: A total of four students from the Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal studied at the University of the North, while four students of German and Media Studies were invited to study in Stendal for 4½ months. The Discipline of German gratefully acknowledges the generosity of the Dean, Prof. Teffo, who covered the cost of the airline ticket for one of the bursars.

Gottwald SR and Schulze MM The link with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) continues. A first year student of German was invited to Germany to attend the Deutschlandkundlicher Hochschul-Winterkurs in Tübingen, Germany.

Gottwald SR and Schulze MM The Discipline of German forged a new link with the Heinrich-Böll-Foundation of Germany when the Regional Director, Dr. S. Cramer, visited the discipline in October 2004.

Meyer E H H was invited to evaluate final year B.Sc and Honours students in the Department of Genetics, University of Stellenbosch, together with Prof Johan Spies, University of Free State.

Meyer E H H co-hosted a Hungarian delegation of aquaculture specialists. After a one week tour of institutions in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga, a research link was established and Prof Meyer has been invited to Hungary. A formal research proposal was submitted to the Department of Science and Technology by the third partner, the ARC Institute at Onderstepoort and Irene.

Meyer E H H stepped down from the Council of the South African Genetics Society, after serving in various capacities for the past 35 years. He is now the editor of the half-century celebration publication, to be launched at the 2006 congress in Bloemfontein.

Moyo N A G – Proposal for Tilapia cage culture project was accepted for funding by the National Research Foundation.

Dippenaar S M was awarded the 2004 WO Neitz Medal for the best PhD thesis by the Parasitology Society of South Africa.

Grobler J P was appointed as part-time research associate in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, USA with annual 3-month visits starting from January 2005. He also achieved second place in “best senior presenter” category at the annual symposium of the Southern African Wildlife Management Association.

A paper by a group of researchers in the School (Howard RL and Jansen van Rensburg and Abotsi) made it to the front page of the African Journal of Biotechnology. This is normally an honour reserved for outstanding work.

Ncube I was appointed to the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Chair in Biotechnology with effect from 2004.

• Moodie U has been appointed to the Standard Generating Body for the Water Sector .

She has been used as a verifier by Local Government Water SETA (LGWSETA) to verify training providers for accreditation.

• Kazeni M M M won an award for best MSc presentation at the 2004 post-graduate INDABA that was held at the University of Pretoria.

• Masha K J was appointed the convener of the development of the Mathematics Benchmarking Test (a SAUVCA project).

• Masha K J served on the reference group for the evaluation of the Foundation Year Programmes proposals for accessing the National Department’s Earmarked funds for the sector.

• Masha K J has been the coordinator of the development of the Mathematics Test, which is part of the Standardised Assessment Tests that are used by all the HDI’s (at the national level).

• Netshisaulu T T was appointed as a moderator for first year Physics at the Midrand Graduate Institute (MGI) – a private institution in Gauteng.

The centre (abbreviated TCoE4ST) is a research unit in the Department of Computer Science and is headed by Prof Oosthuizen H J. Previously, the centre was a joint venture between Computer Science and the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Pretoria since its inception in 1997. Historically, the venture was part of a government- inspired research capacity-building initiative that saw a number of Historically Disadvantaged Institutions twined to some Historically Advantaged Institutions.

• Centre of Excellence in Catalysis (c*change), which has been created by the Department of Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation. The Department of Chemistry, SPMS is one of the groups amongst nine other South African Universities.

• Material Modelling Research in collaboration with the Royal Society, UK the Centre has been established as a state of the art world class modelling facility, especially in the field of metals (platinum, alloys, minerals, and oxides as well as polymers and energy storage devices).

iii. Electron Microscope Unit

• Centre for Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis is multi-user regional facility for research and training. The centre has been appointed as a reference laboratory for the national energy despersive spectrometry proficiency project. Includes 26 participating laboratories from industry and academic institutions.

iv. Unify

• Unify Programme in student academic development has been recognised by the Education Africa as a leader in creating culture of learning in rural areas.

i. Chemistry

Gelebe A C is a member of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) at the Pietersburg English Medium Primary School (PEMPS).

Mafunda B G is an elected member of the Board of Trustees of the UNIN Retirement fund.

Naidoo E B is an executive secretary and church elder of the Pietersburg Parish Lutheran church Council and also Secretary of Music Committee in the circuit and Diocese of ELCSA in Southern Africa.

ii. Physics

Letsoalo MA served in the school governing bodies of “Toronto Primary School” and the “Helena Franz School”. Mr Letsoalo also served as a Technical advisor of the Bokamoso Science and Technology Centre at Bochum.

iii. Water and Sanitation

The project for the building of toilets at Makanye School was completed in 2004. The BSc students were involved in the project. 8 toilets were constructed and the operation and maintenance is being monitored by a group of students under the guidance of Ms K Makhele.

iv. Material Modelling Centre

Ngoepe PE has assisted the Limpopo Department of Finance and Economic Development in the development of the Mining Strategy made, and contributions at the Mining Summit of the Limpopo Province in August 2004.

v Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis

EDS analytical work for Gold and Diamond Division of the SA Police Services (SAPS).

vi Unify

Some of the UNIFY staff have been involved in the Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE), Science and Mathematics Enrichment Project (SMEP) and National Professional Diploma in Education (NPDE) activities. These are the major initiatives by the National Department of Education and aimed at the retraining of mathematics and science teachers. The participants also facilitated school support workshops for teachers in collaboration with our colleagues in the School of Education

3.1(b) GRADUATE SCHOOL OF LEADERSHIP Thakhathi DR was nominated by the Public Service Trainers Forum to be its Patron. As a Patron he officiates ceremonial and other prominent activities including his address on the annual National Public Service Trainers Conference. Thakhathi DR was nominated as a chair of the Limpopo Premier Excellence Awards Assessment Committee.
