Clark is endemic to the Sneeuberg Centre of Floristic Endemism, Eastern Cape, South Africa. This resprouter is characterised by its small greenish-white flowers with a small trifid purple nectar patch and translucent veins; 5(–7)-pin- nate leaflets; multi-branching erect short seasonal flowering shoots; and tall habit of many stiff bare stems with the seasonal shoots massed at the apex. It is most similar to P. oligophylla Eckl. & Zeyh., a widespread species found in the Eastern Cape. The reseeder P. oligophylla differs in its lax virgate spreading habit with numerous long glaucous seasonal shoots; single stem, 1(–3)- glaucous leaflets; more numerous white flow- ers; and standard petals with a purple ring surrounding a bright yellow nectar patch. -

The intimate politics of the Cape Floral Kingdom Book Review The inTimaTe poliTics of The cape floral Kingdom Book Title: The production of scientific knowledge about the Cape Floral Kingdom is, today, the exclusive preserve T.P. Stokoe: The man, the of professional botanical scientists, and the legions of amateur botanists, loosely organised in the myths, the flowers branches of the Botanical Society nationwide, now labour under their direct command. However, this was not always the case. Little more than a century ago the roles were reversed: local study of the Cape Book Cover: Floral Kingdom was the exclusive pursuit of wealthy amateurs, one of whom, Cape Town stockbroker Harry Bolus, endowed the first chair in botany at the University of Cape Town (then the South African College) in 1902. His private herbarium of more than 30 000 specimens followed a decade later, together with a further bequest of £27 000.00 for its upkeep. Scientific botany thus took up residence at the Cape as the handmaiden of amateur botany: as groundsmen tending its public gardens, nurserymen dispensing seed and cultivation advice for its private gardens and gamekeepers enclosing the floral commons against the depredations of the underclass. Professional botany’s scientific enquiry was similarly shaped by its amateur patron’s preoccupations. Alongside taxonomy – the staple of 19th century botany throughout the British Empire – permanent residence lent Cape Town’s amateur botanists a particular preoccupation with ‘plant geography’ – the division of the subcontinent into ‘floristic’ regions on the basis of plant distribution. They were encouraged and assisted in this by the colonial state’s construction of railways and creation of forest conservancies, which opened up Cape Town’s hinterland, particularly the mountains, to recreational Authors: exploration by the urban middle class. -

Although crystal distribution is likely a systematic feature of some species of Buddleja, other wood features relate closely to ecology. Features correlated with xeromorphy in Buddleja include strongly marked growth rings (terminating with vascular tracheids), narrower mean vessel diameter, shorter vessel elements, greater vessel density, and helical thickenings in vessels. Old World species of Buddleja cannot be differentiated from New World species on the basis of wood features. Emorya wood is like that of xeromorphic species of Buddleja. Lateral wall vessel pits of Nuxia are small (2.5 ILm) compared to those of Buddleja (mostly 5-7 ILm) . Peltanthera wood features can also be found in Buddleja or Nuxia; Dickison's transfer of Sanango from Buddlejaceae to Ges neriaceae is justified. All wood features of Buddlejaceae can be found in families of subclass Asteridae such as Acanthaceae, Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, Myoporaceae, Scrophulariaceae, and Verbenaceae. -

Towards Resolving Lamiales Relationships

BMC Evolutionary Biology 2010, 10:352 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/10/352 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Towards resolving Lamiales relationships: insights from rapidly evolving chloroplast sequences Bastian Schäferhoff1*, Andreas Fleischmann2, Eberhard Fischer3, Dirk C Albach4, Thomas Borsch5, Günther Heubl2, Kai F Müller1 Abstract Background: In the large angiosperm order Lamiales, a diverse array of highly specialized life strategies such as carnivory, parasitism, epiphytism, and desiccation tolerance occur, and some lineages possess drastically accelerated DNA substitutional rates or miniaturized genomes. However, understanding the evolution of these phenomena in the order, and clarifying borders of and relationships among lamialean families, has been hindered by largely unresolved trees in the past. Results: Our analysis of the rapidly evolving trnK/matK, trnL-F and rps16 chloroplast regions enabled us to infer more precise phylogenetic hypotheses for the Lamiales. Relationships among the nine first-branching families in the Lamiales tree are now resolved with very strong support. Subsequent to Plocospermataceae, a clade consisting of Carlemanniaceae plus Oleaceae branches, followed by Tetrachondraceae and a newly inferred clade composed of Gesneriaceae plus Calceolariaceae, which is also supported by morphological characters. Plantaginaceae (incl. Gratioleae) and Scrophulariaceae are well separated in the backbone grade; Lamiaceae and Verbenaceae appear in distant clades, while the recently described Linderniaceae are confirmed to be monophyletic and in an isolated position. Conclusions: Confidence about deep nodes of the Lamiales tree is an important step towards understanding the evolutionary diversification of a major clade of flowering plants. The degree of resolution obtained here now provides a first opportunity to discuss the evolution of morphological and biochemical traits in Lamiales. -

PESTS of STORED PRODUCTS a 'Pest of Stored Products' Can Refer To
PESTS OF STORED PRODUCTS A ‘pest of stored products’ can refer to any organism that infests and damages stored food, books and documents, fabrics, leather, carpets, and any other dried or preserved item that is not used shortly after it is delivered to a location, or moved regularly. Technically, these pests can include microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria, arthropods such as insects and mites, and vertebrates such as rodents and birds. Stored product pests are responsible for the loss of millions of dollars every year in contaminated products, as well as destruction of important documents and heritage artifacts in homes, offices and museums. Many of these pests are brought indoors in items that were infested when purchased. Others originate indoors when susceptible items are stored under poor storage conditions, or when stray individual pests gain access to them. Storage pests often go unnoticed because they infest items that are not regularly used and they may be very small in size. Infestations are noticed when the pests emerge from storage, to disperse or sometimes as a result of crowding or after having exhausted a particular food source, and search for new sources of food and harborage. Unexplained occurrences of minute moths and beetles flying in large numbers near stored items, or crawling over countertops, walls and ceilings, powdery residues below and surrounding stored items, and stale odors in pantries and closets can all indicate a possible storage pest infestation. Infestations in stored whole grains or beans can also be detected when these are soaked in water, and hollowed out seeds rise to the surface, along with the adult stages of the pests, and other debris. -

Two centuries of botanical exploration along the Botanists Way, northern Blue Mountains,N.S.W: a regional botanical history that refl ects national trends. Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales 141, 1-24. The Botanists Way is a promotional concept developed by the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden at Mt Tomah for interpretation displays associated with the adjacent Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area (GBMWHA). It is based on 19th century botanical exploration of areas between Kurrajong and Bell, northwest of Sydney, generally associated with Bells Line of Road, and focussed particularly on the botanists George Caley and Allan Cunningham and their connections with Mt Tomah. Based on a broader assessment of the area’s botanical history, the concept is here expanded to cover the route from Richmond to Lithgow (about 80 km) including both Bells Line of Road and Chifl ey Road, and extending north to the Newnes Plateau. The historical attraction of botanists and collectors to the area is explored chronologically from 1804 up to the present, and themes suitable for visitor education are recognised. Though the Botanists Way is focused on a relatively limited geographic area, the general sequence of scientifi c activities described - initial exploratory collecting; 19th century Gentlemen Naturalists (and lady illustrators); learned societies and publications; 20th century publicly-supported research institutions and the beginnings of ecology, and since the 1960s, professional conservation research and management - were also happening nationally elsewhere. -

Francis and Margie had a good day at last week’s show in Perth. Could they top it? Well YES! Emphatically. I don’t know how many first prizes they won at their home show. Winning the Forrest for the second year in succession is something few exhibitors experience. Why did they win this week and not last week? Their star plant was at home last week getting ready for its triumph this week. Their Benthamiella patagonica was the biggest plant of the species I have seen and it was very well flowered. The centre flowers were towering over the cushion just to find room to open. It is not very often that a South American let alone a Patagonian native plant wins the Forrest. If asked I would say it was Colonel and Mrs Anderson’s plant of Oreopolus glaciais, at a Glasgow show 30 years ago. In my ignorance I did not really appreci- ate their achievement. Now I know better and can state that Francis and Margie have won with a superbly well grown plant. Many Con- gratulations to both of them. It was great that the Benthamiella won in Nairn in the same year that Dutch grower, Ger van der Beuken was the SRGC travelling speak- er. Ger talked about Patagonia and its plants and if not the original introducer of the Ben- thamiella to the UK certainly brought plants for sale at our shows. Added to that Highland Show Sec- retary David organ- ised his tour and we have a happy story with all the heroes with a part to play in this Nairn show. -
Fynbos Biome Project: Second Annual Research Meeting I"'\~O
NATIONAL PROGRAMME FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES (TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEMS) NP14/l06/9L/S FYNBOS BIOME PROJECT: SECOND ANNUAL RESEARCH MEETING I"'\~O INTRODUCTION The Fynbos Biome Project has as one of its principal objectives the integration and coordination of ecological research within the biome. Formal coordination at an inter-organizational level is provided by the Steering Committee while informal contact between field workers is maintained through workshop meetings, seminar, etc. As the project develops, annual research meetings will be needed to bring all parties together for an exchange of progress reports, research plans and the review of programme goals. The second such meeting is planned for Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 July 1980, at the conference facilities of the Food and Fruit Technology Research Institute, Stellenbosch. FORM OF MEETING The meeting will consist of a series of approximately one hour sessions addressing specific topics. Each researcher currently undertaking, or planning to undertake a project within the theme, will be asked to present a 10 minute summary of his/her plans or progress. At the end of each session the Chairman will lead discussion on the overall aims of the topic under review, related to existing and future activities within it. DOCUMENTATION Every listed participant will be asked to prepare, in English or Afrikaans, an abstract (IlSO words) of his/her proposed contribution for compilation and distribution before the meeting. These should be submitted to the Liaison Officer, Fynbos Biome Project, c/o Department of Organic Chemistry, University of Cape Town, Rondebosch, 7700. PARTICIPATION All researchers already associated with the Fynbos Biome Project and those who are interested to learn more about its activities are welcome to attend.
