The literature of the subject, already very great, is being aug mented at a rate hitherto unequalled; and it is needless to say that this fact alone renders any general analysis at present provisional. As far as possible the author has endeavoured to confine himself to a descriptive study and to base this study upon regional divisions. Criticism has been limited to the indication of suggestive analogies, to summaries in the shape of notes, and to the formulation of a general plan of selection (indicated in the Introduction), without which no book could be written. The time will certainly come for a closely analytical comparative study of North American myths, but at the present time a general description is surely the work which is needed. Bibliographical references have been almost entirely rele gated to the Notes, where the sources for each section will be found, thus avoiding the typographical disfigurement which footnotes entail. The plan, it is believed, will enable a ready identification of any passage desired, and at the same time will give a convenient key for the several treatments of related topics. The Bibliography gives the sources upon which the text is chiefly based, chapter for chapter. Other references, inci dentally quoted, are given in the Notes. The critical reader's attention is called, in particular, to Note I, dealing with the difficult question of nomenclature and spelling. The author has made no attempt to present a complete bibliography of American Indian mythology. For further references the litera ture given in the "Bibliographical Guides "should be consulted; vi AUTHOR'S PREFACE important works which have appeared since the publication of these "Guides" are, of course, duly mentioned. For the form and spelling of the names of tribes and of linguistic stocks the usage of the Handbook of American Indians is followed, and the same form is used for both the singular and for the collective plural. Mythic names of In dian origin are capitalized, italics being employed for a few Indian words which are not names. The names of various objects regarded as persons or mythic beings — sun, moon, earth, various animals, etc. — are capitalized when the per sonified reference is clear; otherwise not. This rule is difficult to maintain consistently, and the usage in the volume doubt less varies somewhat. The word "corn," occurring in proper names, must be under stood in its distinctively American meaning of "maize." Maize being the one indigenous cereal of importance in Ameri can ritual and myth, "Spirits of the Corn" (to use Sir J. G. Frazer's classic phrase) are, properly speaking, in America " Spirits of the Maize." A like ambiguity attaches to " buffalo," which in America is almost universally applied to the bison. The illustrations for the volume have been selected with a view to creating a clear impression of the art of the North American Indians, as well as for their pertinency to mythic ideas. This art varies in character in the several regions quite as much as does the thought which it reflects. It is interesting to note the variety in the treatment of similar themes or in the construction of similar ceremonial articles; for this reason representations of different modes of presenting like ideas have been chosen from diverse sources: thus, the Thunderbird conception appears in Plates III, VI, XVI, and Figure i; the ceremonial pole in Plates XII, XVII, XXX; and masks from widely separate areas are shown in the Frontispiece and in Plates IV, VII, XXV, XXXI. In a few cases (as Plates II, VIII, IX, XI, XVIII, and probably XIX) the art is modified by white influence; in the majority of examples it is purely AUTHOR'S PREFACE vii aboriginal. The motives which prompt the several treatments are interestingly various: thus, the impulse which lies behind Plates II, VIII, IX, XVIII, XIX is purely the desire for pic torial illustration of a mythic story; mnemonic, historical, or heraldic in character — prompted by the desire for record — are Plates V, X, XI, XVII, XX, XXI, XXX, XXXII, XXXIII; while the majority of the remaining examples are representa tions of cult-objects. Through all, however, is to be observed the keen aesthetic instinct which is so marked a trait of North American tribes. The author desires to express his sense of obligation to the editor of this series, Dr. Louis H. Gray, for numerous and valuable emendations, and to Dr. Melvin R.     1 Secularization of religion in Indonesia: From Custom to Pancasila and back to adat Stephen C. Headley (CNRS) [Version 3 Nov., 2008] Introduction: Why would anyone want to promote or accept a move to normalization of religion? Why are village rituals considered superstition while Islam is not? What is dangerous about such cultic diversity? These are the basic questions which we are asking in this paper. After independence in 1949, the standardization of religion in the Republic of Indonesia was animated by a preoccupation with “unity in diversity”. All citizens were to be monotheists, for monotheism reflected more perfectly the unity of the new republic than did the great variety of cosmologies deployed in the animistic cults. Initially the legal term secularization in European countries (i.e., England and France circa 1600-1800) meant confiscations of church property. Only later in sociology of religion did the word secularization come to designate lesser attendance to church services. It also involved a deep shift in the epistemological framework. It redefined what it meant to be a person (Milbank, 1990). Anthropology in societies where religion and the state are separate is very different than an anthropology where the rulers and the religion agree about man’s destiny. This means that in each distinct cultural secularization will take a different form depending on the anthropology conveyed by its historically dominant religion expression. For example, the French republic has no cosmology referring to heaven and earth; its genealogical amnesia concerning the Christian origins of the Merovingian and Carolingian kingdoms is deliberate for, the universality of the values of the republic were to liberate its citizens from public obedience to Catholicism.

    chapter 4 De-historification (1944–1948): Shamanic Magic and the Dialectic Movement between Mircea Eliade and Claude Lévi-Strauss 1 The Integration of Eliade and Lévi-Strauss: Sacred Poles and Songs of Labor as Forms of De-historification After Vittorio Macchioro recommended Eliade’s Yoga: An Essay on the Origins of Indian Mysticism (1936) to his new son-in-law shortly after its publication, de Martino’s legacy leaves no traces of the Romanian giant for a decade.1 Even though Eliade’s lengthy article entitled “The Problem of Shamanism” (1946) is absent in de Martino’s The World of Magic,2 it is around this same time that he recommenced to engage the work of his famous Romanian counterpart. Responding to the recently published Techniques of Yoga (1948), de Martino showed himself visibly impressed with it, particularly with its sensibility for the religious conception of time and history.3 His review, published in Pettazzoni’s prestigious journal Studies and Materials of History of Religions,4 was generous with praise. This work by Mircea Eliade responds very well to the general require- ment for the Western culture to broaden its own humanism and to renew its own problems by means of the comprehension of forms of spirituality that are ideally distant from ours. According to the author, the paradox of Yoga (reintegration in all the forms of the indistinct, in the primor- dial unity) can be understood in light of the archaic aspiration to abol- ish history, to restore the auroral state, periodically and ritually renewing the “archetype time,” the time of the origins.

    1. Description 1.1 Name of society, language, and language family: The society is called the Wintu people. They have several other names, including “Wintun.” The language that they speak is Wintuan, a dormant language similar to Nomlaki and Patwin (1). The three major regions all spoke different dialects from one another, so if a Northern Wintu met a Central or Southern Wintu, they would likely have a hard time communicating with one another (3, pg 438). 1.2 ISO code (3 letter code from ethnologue.com): WNW (1) 1.3 Location (latitude/longitude): There are three groups within this group, so there is not a specific location of latitude and longitude for which these people can be found. That being said, the Wintu people can be located north of Cottonwood Creek in the northern part of the Sacramento Valley in California. The people live as far north as the beginning of the Trinity river (1). The total area of the “Wintu Proper” people extends for about 50 miles (2, pg 1). 1.4 Brief history: As mentioned before, there are three groups of Wintu: the southern Patwins, the central “Wintun Propers” or Nomlaki, and the more northern Wintu (2, pg 1). Historically speaking, the most highly populated area of Wintu people has always been the McCloud area, and that is where most of the Wintu currently reside (2, pg 1). Though they have let go of virtually all of the traditions of their ancestors, the Wintu people do still exist today in Northern California. A particular tribe within the Wintu, those residing near the McCloud River, currently have a population of 150 (4).

Navigating the Strait of Malacca, they sailed into the ‘South Seas.’ Without knowing it, they had entered into the waters surrounding the world’s largest archipelago – Indonesia – a constellation of over 17,000 islands scattered across the ocean, a true, continent on water. And there before them arose the immense, mysterious island of Borneo, the third largest island in the world and home to the fierce, independent, headhunter tribes of the Dayak, a term coined by Europeans for the indigenous ethnic groups that inhabited the island. Under the cover of one of the world’s oldest rainforests, along the rivers and on the hillsides of a biosphere of incredible diversity, the some 200 ethnic subgroups of the Dayak developed their own very diverse culture. Despite a plenitude of dialects, languages, laws and customs, these disparate tribes shared distinguishing characteristics - profound animist beliefs and headhunting tactics and rituals for which they gained worldwide infamy.

Today, orangutan conservation has become something that Indonesians do out in the forests. In service of these efforts, musicians and shamans have joined Sound For Orangutan, an annual music event held in Jakarta since 2012 with additional festivals in other locations in subsequent years. Within this frame of reference, I will argue that both music and shamanism exceed semantics that merely describes differences in things. On stage: musicians incorporate different primate “calls” in a single song that points to a location in which the orangutan and non-orangutan coinhabit.

    Oral Tradition, 31/2 (2017): 583-620 Multimedial Parallelism in Ritual Performance (Parallelism Dynamics II) Frog Ritual performances create situations in which language, movements, spaces, and objects can all be coordinated in powerfully symbolic ways. The turn to performance expanded studies of verbal art from viewing tradition as text to tradition as embodied behavior wherein language is only one part.1 This expanded view on verbal art was well established already decades ago and continues to evolve.2 However, frameworks for analyzing relationships between linguistic and non-linguistic aspects of performance, relationships between speech, gesture, and movement through space, have remained less developed. The present article contributes to discussion by applying parallelism as a tool for approaching some of these relations in ritual practices that engage with unseen forces. On the one hand, the social perceptibility of parallelism between speech and other aspects of performance can be less ambiguous where it appears connected to a ritual’s efficacy. On the other hand, this type of parallelism in ritual leads into significant questions about imaginal understandings of the world where the unseen referred to in verbal art is considered no less “real” than empirical experience. Emphasis is on theory and discussed in relation to a variety of traditions, including those addressed by other authors in this special issue of Oral Tradition, traditions of magic and ritual of cultures in the Baltic Sea region, and some traditions of shamanism. Parallelism is here viewed as a general semiotic phenomenon of sameness or similarity and difference in commensurable units that allows those units to be perceived as parallel members of groups (see also Cureton 1992:263).
