Peri (1939–2000) David Peri, a close friend during the last years of his life, provided me with both the idea for this study and the primary archival resources to conduct it. After the City of Ukiah acquired the Hudson-Carpenter estate in 1975, David was hired to do an inventory. During the course of this project, he recognized the unparalleled ethnobotanical value of John Hudson’s field- notes. With permission from Lila Lee, administrator for Otis Kendrick, former owner of the Hudson-Carpenter estate, he retained copies of the entire set of documents containing ethnobotanical data with the intention of analyzing and publishing it himself. In the late 1970s David began efforts to systematize the material on index cards with the assistance of students, whose names regrettably I never located. He never completed the ef- fort and the Hudson ethnobotany study eventually took up permanent residence on several locked shelves at the bottom of a cabinet in his office. Decades later, as he approached retire- ment, David realized he was unlikely to finish the project and passed the materials on to me, his master’s student at the time, so that I might use them for my thesis. Our close collaboration discussing and assessing this remarkable ethnohistorical and ethnobotanical resource changed my view of the potential of both ethnobotany and anthro- pology. My work under Dr. Peri’s tutelage led me to continue my studies in the doctorate program in anthropology at Tulane University. I was already in New Orleans when news of David’s death reached me, just five months after he signed my completed thesis. It gives me immense pleasure to now complete the project that once was as much David’s as my own. Now is the time to really get out and hike the trails searching for late bloomers. It’s always good to call or check the location’s website if you can, and adjust your expectations accordingly before heading out. Please enjoy your outing, and please use your best flower viewing etiquette. Along Salt Creek near the southern entrance to Sequoia National Park, the wildflowers are abundant and showy. Masses of spring flowering common madia (Madia elegans) are covering sunny slopes and bird’s-eye gilia (Gilia tricolor) is abundant on flatlands. Good crops of owl’s clover (Castilleja sp.) are common in scattered colonies and along shadier trails, woodland star flower (Lithophragma sp.), Munz’s iris (Iris munzii), and the elegant naked broomrape (Orobanche uniflora) are blooming. There is an abundance of Chinese houses (Collinsia heterophylla) and foothill sunburst (Pseudobahia heermanii). This is a banner year for the local geophytes. Mountain pretty face (Tritelia ixiodes ssp. anilina) and Ithuriel’s spear (Triteliea laxa) are abundant. With the warming temperatures farewell to spring (Clarkia cylindrical subsp. clavicarpa) is starting to show up with their lovely bright purple pink floral display and is particularly noticeable along highway 198.     United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service Technical Note No: TX-PM-20-02 July 2020 A Guide on Common, Herbaceous, Hydrophytic Vegetation of Southern Texas Plant Materials Technical Note Horsetail Background: Wetlands are those lands that have saturated soils, shallow standing water or flooding during at least a portion of the growing season. These sites have soils that are saturated for at least two consecutive weeks during the growing season and support a distinct vegetation type adapted for life in saturated soil conditions. Purpose: The purpose of this Technical Note is to provide information on the use of some common wetland plants of southern Texas. The list includes plants found along the Guadalupe River around Tivoli southward to the Rio Grande River floodplain. It is not intended to be a comprehensive treatment of the wetland flora of this region. Rather it is intended to introduce to the reader the many common wetland plant species that occur in south Texas. The guide is broken down into four categories: wildlife habitat, shoreline erosion control, water quality improvement and landscaping. Each species has a brief description of its identifying features, notes on its ecology or habitat, use and its National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) assessment. For more detailed information we suggest referring to our listed references. All pictures came from the USDA Plants Data Base or the E. “Kika” de la Garza Plant Materials Center. However, we lack demographic data for most species, and the data we have are often geographically aggregated. We determined to what extent existing data can be extrapolated to predict pop- ulation performance across larger sets of species and spatial areas. We used 550 matrix models, across 210 species, sourced from the COMPADRE Plant Matrix Database, to model how climate, geographic proximity and phylogeny predicted population performance.

The national park was F E R N S established in 1968. In 1994, a cooperative agreement with the California Department of Parks and Recreation added Del Norte Coast, Prairie Creek, Athyriaceae – Lady Fern Family and Jedediah Smith Redwoods state parks to form a single administrative Athyrium filix-femina var. cyclosporum • northwestern lady fern unit. Together they comprise about 133,000 acres (540 km2), including 37 miles of coast line. Almost half of the remaining old growth redwood forests Blechnaceae – Deer Fern Family are protected in these four parks.
